In Short – This traditional Mexican restaurant is a dark, cavernous hideaway. The low-ceilinged rooms and full bar are brightened with rustic knickknacks, string lights and a tropical aquarium, while the more romantic, ivy-covered garden patio paradise in back flickers with candlelight. From spacious semicircular booths, Westsiders, dates and families savor the intimate setting and standard Mexican fare. Burritos, fajitas, fried tacos and more are available, and can be accompanied by strawberry margaritas. –

Decent Mexican food, random service, terrible host

by DHG7781 at Citysearch

I've been going to Don Antonio's on and off for about four years now. The food is decent Tex Mex and overpriced compared to many small mom and pop shops that are just as good. I usually go when I'm craving their fajitas which are excellent. Service is a crap shoot and depends on who you get as your waiter. I'm giving the restaurant one star based on my most recent visit.

I went on a Thursday night and was told that I would be seated in 20 minutes by this host with a pony tail....I'm guessing he's the owner. After twenty minutes, I checked in and was told that I would be called next. I was never called over the speaker phone and checked again. The host said that he called my name, but I was literally ten feet away from him and didn't hear a thing. This happens four more times!!! While this is happening, the host is getting hammered on vodka tonics as he's working. I only managed to get seating after literally pulling a group of waiters aside and complaining, while the apparently drunk host was just standing there doing nothing. Other people had this problem as well, but not as bad as my case. Don Antonio's has definitely lost a longtime customer here, along with any one in my network I can share this experience with. Their food isn't that good to be treating their patrons like this.

  • Pros: Fajitas, Rice and Beans
  • Cons: Unprofessional host, Sometimes rude wait staff

Delicious Mexican food!

by persilam at Citysearch

I am a Santa Monica native, so Don Antonio's is not only a good choice because it's semi-close, but it's also reasonably priced and has good food! They used to have cheaper combo plates and dishes, but their prices are still very reasonable and fair for the amount of food they give you! Every time I go, I never need to order more than 2 dishes for my boyfriend and I (and we are not light eaters). The chimichangas are my favorite, and the burrito especial is also good. The nachos are huge! (it is a meal and then some-with either chicken or ground beef, both are good choices). Ordering just the nachos, and the burrito is WAY ENOUGH for 2 people. We took almost half of each dish home last time! Anyways, I have never tried their drinks at the bar or had their tacos, but the ambience is nice (a bit dark) but it's kind of romantic almost. Don Antonio's is definitely my go-to place whenever I am choosing to dine out for Mexican!!

  • Pros: Great chimichangas
  • Cons: Bit of a wait at certain times

Nice place but not well lit

by Foment3 at Citysearch

I have been here for lunch many times and the food is good and they get you in and out quickly. No doubt it is dark and you do have to come in and wait in the service area but for lunch it was no worry. Never had a bad meal or a screwup.

  • Pros: Good food and outdoor option
  • Cons: dark place
