The Scene – Imagine Dorothy's Kansas house dropped in front of the Westside Pavilion: white clapboards, plaid wallpaper and wood paneling. Suit-and-tie types, frat boys and families alike jostle for the 20 counter seats. – – The Food – The Westside's best burger, doled out in a paper wrapper, draws the carnivorous masses from all over town. The signature steak burger is a juicy, medium-thick patty on a seedless bun piled high with all the fixings--mayo, sweet relish, crunchy dill pickles, crisp iceberg lettuce and a slab of half-melted Tillamook cheddar. For an extra…

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
Don't ask for anything not listed on the menu--a slice of tomato, a milk shake--or the old guy behind the counter may give you a tongue-lashing.
The Extras:
Walk off that burger and pie with a stroll around the Westside Pavilion.
Save Time:
Don't let crowds scare you away. Ordering, devouring and paying for your burger takes less than 10 minutes, so lines move fast.

  1. i'll admit the prices continue to rise and parking and waiting or sometimes a hassling issue, but the Apple Pan is a true gem.
  2. Maybe not the best place for a romantic date, as only counter seating is available, and it is limited.
  3. The fact is: you can get a very good burger at In-n-Out, but it doesn't have the same feel, the same taste, OR the ambiance.
  4. love the atmosphere, the zippy yet friendly waitstaff at the counter, the no-frills presentation (getting a burger slapped down in front of you with no plate is just fun in itself).
  5. This is a unique and fun atmosphere for sure.
  6. This place has great french fries, pies, and atmosphere.
  7. The decor is not much to brag about but the burgers are delicious as are the pies.
  8. As for the ambience, the place is nice but some of the customers become quite hostile regarding open stools.

  1. never thought that an apple pie would go good with a burger, now I judge all burger and pie place by this one, it IS simply the best.
  2. I've eaten here several times (a must to bring out of town visitors who are up for a kitchy, old school experience) and find the food just above fast food in quality with one exception, the apple pie is very good!
  3. went with two friends, and between us, we had three burgers, two plates of fries, two drinks, and two slices of apple pie, all of which was good, but not spectacular.
  4. Apple Pan has simple yummy burgers and some of the best pie in town!
  5. Fries are perfectly crispy and creamy on the inside, and the apple pie is well spiced with crisp crust, but come on.
  6. love it on my burger, on my fries, on the side and I even eat it with the amazing banana cream pie!
  7. Great pie, bad meat
  8. The banana cream pie is heavenly, but make sure you come early enough before they run out.
  9. In addition, their signature apple pie wasn't that wonderful.
  10. Apple Pan is an institution, serving up messy burgers (WITH lettuce, please) with properly spicy hickory sauce, hot crunchy fries, and an apple pie reminiscent of a bygone era.
  11. You can't get a burger and a piece of pie this good anywhere else in California.
  12. like Apple Pan, I like to sit at the counter and escape the world for 20 minutes, and the banana cream pie is the best I've ever had, but if you sit in Manny's section (on the left half of the restaurant) be prepared for the worst service ANYWHERE in LA
  13. and yummy apple pie with cinnamon sauce.
  14. The pie is great.
  15. The apple pie however, is worth driving accross town for -- it's the best apple pie in town, if not the entire state of California.
  16. The Hickory Burger is one of a kind -- but the pie is awesome.
  17. That is the main reason why I go there, though I often get a full pie to go fo.
  18. My favorite is the Hickory Burger with cheese and the apple pie ala mode.
  19. great cup o' joe to go with a slice of chocolate cream pie, or banana cream pie (or take a friend and split both)
  20. wait for a seat at the counter, order your burger, and save room for some pie.
  21. This place has the best banana cream pie I have ever tasted!
  22. Try not to arrive during a lunch or dinner rush, order the Hickory Burger with cheese or the Steak Burger if you don't like sauce, fries well done and a piece of pie if you have room.
  23. Great burgers, pie, & service
  24. The hot apple pie a la mode is delicious.
  25. best banana cream pie
  26. love the old-school charm of this place and cannot resist the burger (nothing fancy, everything just right) and the cream pies.
  27. Quick service, consistency, quality ingredients, and amazing burgers and pie.
  28. Every time I go here, this is what I order: a hickory burger, with cheddar, one order of fries to split, apple pie ala mode to split.

  1. went with two friends, and between us, we had three burgers, two plates of fries, two drinks, and two slices of apple pie, all of which was good, but not spectacular.
  2. We ordered full meals and were enjoying our drinks when we were told that after one coffee we had to buy a full order of another coffee or leave.
  3. also a great late-night date spot for some coffee.
  4. The root beer was good, too (came in a bottle).
food quality
87.5% positive
  1. The fries were pretty good but the burgers were just average, if that.
  2. After all the wonderful food I had in Europe, I still missed my hickory burger.
  3. The Hickory without cheese is the best burger in L.A. No question about it.
  4. But, these two strikes along with the fact they've magically persuaded poor misled Angelinos into believing this is some wonderful burger joint -- well, that's three strikes
  5. the best burger ever.
  6. Really good burgers
  7. like the apple pan the burgers are good, the cone glasses they used to (maybe still) use are really cool, but its not a cheap place to eat.
  8. Cheap and really good food, you won't be dissapointed
  9. The fries are good.
  10. Why pay $6 bucks for a small burger and $2 bucks for a small plate of fries that aren't as good as In-N-Out?
  11. Screw the service, the food is tasty!
  12. definitely an awesome burger, but not cheap!
  13. like this place because they have great hamburgers and there is nothing like a good and hearty burger to interupt your shopping at Westside Pavillon.
  14. never thought that an apple pie would go good with a burger, now I judge all burger and pie place by this one, it IS simply the best.
  15. The decor is not much to brag about but the burgers are delicious as are the pies.
  16. Apple Pan is an institution, serving up messy burgers (WITH lettuce, please) with properly spicy hickory sauce, hot crunchy fries, and an apple pie reminiscent of a bygone era.
  17. You can't get a burger and a piece of pie this good anywhere else in California.
  18. It is a big burger and worth the price.
  19. The food, however, is completely overrated.
  20. The food here probably was good, when the restaurant was new.
  21. Back in Time for the best burger!
  22. read on MSN how great these burgers were, so this past Sunday Me, my husband and kids decided to take a drive out there all the way from the Riverside area(about an hour drive) to try these so called "BEST" burgers.
  23. You wil have an awesome meal and will enjoy it surrounded by a great cross section of west Los Angeles.
  24. Each morning they make the Apple pies fresh and the smell was almost like some kind of drug.
  25. Want to go back in time to the good ole days of the 40's and experience the best burgers in town?
  26. Over all really good food, everything on the menu is really good.
  27. personally love apple pan's hickory smoked burger!
  28. you are in for a great meal.
  29. The hickory sauce is actually pretty good and so were the two burgers in general.
  30. The burgers are fresh and delicious.
  31. good but not great historic burger place
  32. From Father's Office to The Counter to In'n'Out to my own porch BBQ, L.A. is filled with many great burgers.
  33. The burger is good, not great, not exceptional, just good.
  34. Unique place with good food, but we won't be back.
  35. These are by far the best burgers in L.A. and probably the world!
  36. The food was okay i would have liked the burger to be a bit more cooked the bun broke apart half way thru and the freis well i saw them sitting there re fried and then severd back to me they were more like cheetos.
  37. don't recommend the sandwiches, but get one if you don't eat red meat.
  38. think its a good place and the burgers are really very decent but its not quick (sometimes a line) and you feel a little goofy for spending almost 30 bucks on a few burgers afterwards.
  39. The meat is great, the combination of flavors is intoxicating & the the place has a great feel.
  40. We always bring our friends here for the best burgers in town.
  41. Long story short, if the burger were great, the guy wouldn't matter.
  42. great burgers TOO expensive
  43. So, if you want to sit and relax and enjoy a nice meal stay away from Apple Pan.
  44. The fries were good.
  45. The fact is: you can get a very good burger at In-n-Out, but it doesn't have the same feel, the same taste, OR the ambiance.
  46. wait for a seat at the counter, order your burger, and save room for some pie.
  47. I've eaten here several times (a must to bring out of town visitors who are up for a kitchy, old school experience) and find the food just above fast food in quality with one exception, the apple pie is very good!
  48. It's the best, most flavorful burger I've ever had.
  49. Those who say its the best burger in town are very biased, and they're blinded by tradition.
  50. Great nostalgia, but barely in the top ten for best burgers in LA
  51. The best egg salad sandwich I've ever eaten!
  52. and yummy apple pie with cinnamon sauce.
  53. love the Hickory burger.
  54. This must be a joke- "best burger LA?
  55. keep that great food coming!
  56. Their "special sauce" is nothing more than fancy catsup and when you order a soda you end up paying $2 for a canned coke in a paper cup.
  57. This place has great french fries, pies, and atmosphere.
  58. Apple Pan has simple yummy burgers and some of the best pie in town!
  59. Apple Pan is simply the best burger joint in all of LA and probably up there with the best in the country.
  60. The burgers are absolutly delicious.
  61. The burgers are mouthwatering, and definitely filling.
  62. It's not a great burger; its a good burger.
  63. For less than $10, this is the best burger in my opinion.
  64. would not recommend this place to anyone, even if the food was free.
  65. went with two friends, and between us, we had three burgers, two plates of fries, two drinks, and two slices of apple pie, all of which was good, but not spectacular.
  66. the burgers were supposedly great.
  67. went with a friend not long ago, we've both eaten a few burgers in our time, and we both agreed that this was, by far the worst burger we have eaten since high school (remember the soyburgers at the school cafeteria?)
  68. burgers are great.
  69. Excellent burgers and if you have room try their homemade pies!
  70. Juicy meat, tangy relish, and cheese with a zip put this buger into a category of its own.
  71. had the Hickory Burger and split fries with a friend, was full and loved the food.
  72. ate there on a Sunday, and had a horrible burger made from old meat.
  73. Relaxed, diner feel, unique, average burger
  74. read that the apple pan was the best burger in L.A. I went with my hubby and little girl.
  75. Every time I go here, this is what I order: a hickory burger, with cheddar, one order of fries to split, apple pie ala mode to split.
  76. But, it is $11 for the same amount of food in a Happy Meal.
  77. Great burgers, pie, & service
  78. The hot apple pie a la mode is delicious.
  79. highly suggest the "Hickory Cheesey," the Hickory Burger with a thick slice of Tilamook cheddar, and their near-perfect fries.
  80. love it on my burger, on my fries, on the side and I even eat it with the amazing banana cream pie!
  81. great burger.
  82. Simply the best burger in the burger capital of the world.
  83. the best tuna sandwiches anywhere.
  84. Decent food, long waits and the largest fast food bill EVER.
  85. Took a bunch of friends there, expecting some good burgers.
  86. Expecting a big and sloppy burger, I instead got something that looked as if i got it at a carnival booth.
  87. Don't get me wrong, the burgers are good, but definitely not great.
  88. Quick service, consistency, quality ingredients, and amazing burgers and pie.
  89. terrible burgers, service, and price;
  90. Still love the burgers there!
  91. Now we go once in a blue moon and it's still the great indulgence but the prices seem pretty steep and the food pretty mediocre, particularly after one has been treated like dirt.
  92. The Apple Pan has absolutely the best burgers in the L. A. area.
  93. The burger, with its thick cheddar slice, relish, and that weird sauce which I still haven't figured out what it is, was also a winner.
  94. The burgers were great, and certainly above average.
  95. Dependable good basic food.
  96. Best service and best burgers!
  97. at least at those places they're somewhat efficient at taking orders and the food is good!
  98. love the atmosphere, the zippy yet friendly waitstaff at the counter, the no-frills presentation (getting a burger slapped down in front of you with no plate is just fun in itself).
  99. okay, the burgers are great and the waiters have been there since I was a kid, but the coolest things about the Apple Pan are:
  100. don't understand how anybody can rate this the best burger on the block, much less in L.A.!
  101. The very best burgers
  102. If I go back on a whim (it would have to be because the value is not all that great for what you get) I would order the burger the next time without that sweet relish they smother it in.
  103. Great pie, bad meat
  104. Both were good burgers, but for about 6.50 a piece I do not think they were worth the money.
  105. If you like bbq sauce (on the hickory burger) that is virtually indistinguishable from ketchup then, again, you've come to the right place.
  106. The best retro burger place
  107. The Steak burger is the best burger i've ever had.
  108. hated the BBQ sauce and all the pickles.
  109. love the old-school charm of this place and cannot resist the burger (nothing fancy, everything just right) and the cream pies.
  110. Excellent food if you can deal with the place
  111. Best burger ever!
  112. It is my favorite burger in LA (along with the Double-Double, and the burger at Father's Office)
  113. cant tell you if the burgers were good, since I was rudely "not served" but if you have a manager knowing he has a rude employee and telling a customer, what kind of business is that?
  114. Whether you order the amazing hickory burger or a steak burger - great french fries and a soda served in an old fashioned paper cone cup.
  115. Service is snappy and the burgers are amazing.
  116. good burgers not great-- not cheap.
  117. perfect meal
  118. another great burger.
  119. It's the order in which they apply the "stuff", you know the lettuce mayo pickle and the hickory sause, the bun is always fresh and kinda flat with out sesame seeds, the cheese is chedder I think?
  120. Try not to arrive during a lunch or dinner rush, order the Hickory Burger with cheese or the Steak Burger if you don't like sauce, fries well done and a piece of pie if you have room.
  121. The burger is good, don't get me wrong but what you pay for, In-n-out gets my vote.
  122. Because they make great food.
  123. Personally, I like a burger patty that's more of a fatty than a skinny -- this thing was less hefty than a McDonald's burger.
  124. If the guy were nice, the burger might have been more palatable.

Great!

by TinHawk

This place is great. Whenever I find myself on that side of the hill, I head over there (which is usually a Monday, so I get really sad that they're closed.

Love the Hickory burger and cream soda. Standing doesn't usually take too long, unless you have more than 2 people.

I went with my friend and my son, stood for about 5 minutes before getting 3 seats. The waiter got us our food pretty quickly and made a slice of cheese with a smiley face in it for my kid. He loved it.

The waiter is surly, but he's never been rude to me ever.

There are a few pro tips, though:

1-Park down the street a little bit. The parking lot for the Apple Pan is like 3 spaces. The parking on the street is good for about an hour, which is all you'll need.

2-There are only 20 seats in this place. It's not a sit and dine experience. It's an eat on your lunch break, then gtfo kinda place. They have to keep the customers coming and going, otherwise you have a crowd of people out the door waiting for half an hour for one seat. If you want to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee, order it to go or head to Starbucks. Which brings me to...

3-Order it to go. I love the burgers, but I don't like crowds. This place gets crazy crowded around lunch times.

The parking issue caused it to lose a star, but great place.
