Hollywood Attitude Found Here.

by JTG90046

I find this place so incredible that it remains such a destination, with a staff that couldn't care less to serve you. On several visits we have sat down or sat at the bar and were completely ignored for as long as 20 minutes. I can't believe a bar tender would be so blind to future tips! I would excuse this if the place was packed with patrons, but it was the early dinner hour. Obviously, this review will not keep the masses away, but hopefully a manager will see this and take note. A smile goes a long way! Especially in this town.

  • Pros: Great Ambiance
  • Cons: Poor Entree's, Staff Attitude

Overpriced, overcrowded and Not Good Quality

by Deloreshively1

Much better choices in the area, the only reason this place survives is it's location and outdoor area- food and drinks are overpriced. Food quality is poor and presentation is pretty boring...

  • Pros: decent service
  • Cons: dirty bathrooms, food quality, cost

West Hollywood gay restaurant, coffeehouse and bar provides both relaxed fun and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

by Contributor

In Short
An unassuming but comprehensive coffee bar and outdoor lounge leads into a maze-like setting, which gets more complex and exotic the deeper it goes. Subsequent rooms are drenched in ineffably warm red and gold lights, highlighted by a sublime Arabian patio with recessed cabana mattresses draped with swaths of white fabric, and the contradiction of a burning fireplace and cooling mechanized fans. An expansive roster of fragrant martini choices--fruit and chocolate-based--helps distinguish the sophisticated vibe. The crowd is mixed and unpretentious, largely gay male, but with a strong gay and straight female presence, and frequent hetero couples, clearly drawn by the enveloping feel and an eclectic food menu. The flawless atmosphere and attractive patrons (and bar staff) compensate for the daunting cocktail prices. The proximity to other hot spots doesn't hurt either.

Going down hill Fast

by michaelbravo

I have been going to the abbey for years now and had always been a big fan until recently. I am not sure what changes have taken place but the Abbey has really gone down hill. We took a friend their for her birthday and we had the worst service. They brought dirty plates with our food and didn't even apologize. To top things off we found a plastic lid to a disposable cup in our birthday girl's drink. Once again, they didn't apologize at all. They wouldn't comp the drinks, were rude about the entire situation and practically ruined her birthday experience. we all decided to just leave the rest of our drinks (which aren't cheap at the abbey) and cut our losses. Not sure if it is b/c it was taken over by SBE or what, but that place is HORRIBLE now.

  • Cons: Horrible service

Packed on weekends! ...Even on Sudnays until late at night

by doll83

Karaoke nights are every Sunday here. When it gets later patrons are daring enough to enter the stage and deliver a vibrant performance --after having a few drinks of course. Otherwise the place is packed with homosexuals, straight women and couples who come here for the nice atmosphere. Be aware it is getting packed when the night draws on and I wouldn't recommend to wear flip flops--Ouch!

Big change

by MitchNY

I get to LA every 2 or 3 months and The Abbey used to be my best place to hang out with friends while Im there on biz from NYC. I was really surprised on my last visit to the bar, on Monday night, and the transformation of what it used to be one of the best bars in West Hollywood was shocking. It feels really different now, annoying show and even people look strange and with a rude behaviour. I asked my friends and they told me the Abbey has new managment or ownership and that might be the reason of all the recent bad changes. Really bad taste guys!!!!, you should do something about it. The only pleasent image remaining there: the charming and cute bartenders who worked since many years ago and make me feel like family. Thumbs up for them!!!! As far as the new improvements with shows and all that, very bad taste I should say. Lets get back to the gentle and great atmosphere the abbey used to have not long ago. Im sure you dont want to be categorized as another West Hollywood bar, you want more than that.

Used to be the place to go....

by RamiLA

I used to go to The Abbey every Monday night with my friends, last night was our last. ... Was a nice place to be, relax, have a dinner and cocktails. Now it become like any other bar Weho, it looks like Rage or Fiesta Cantina. They have the trashiest show. If you can, avoid The Abbey on Mondays night. I think they have a new management ?

Karaoke night :-(

by Yo01

For many years the abbey used to be the place to go. Recently a new karaoke concept was introduced on Sundays and is making all loyal clients not to visit again.

Please be aware that Karaoke is not for a place of the caliber of The Abbey. This need to stop. Is atracting a very getho class crowd and its becoming unvisitable.

What a shame. :( I guess that the money that me and my friends spend there every weekend will be worth it somewhere else.

  • Pros: Very good service
  • Cons: Sundays crowd, very low class. Mondays shows (dont think it goes with The Abbey)

Not the Place to be....

by newflavor

The Abbey was once the IT spot for the gay crowd but no longer. Since SBE took over its management, this place has slowly lost its luster. The straight girls have invaded and the gay boys have moved on to places like Eleven and HERE Lounge. Still fun for a cocktail in the late afternoon but the late night scene isn't cool anymore.

  • Pros: Nice space and decor
  • Cons: Uneven service, expensive, terrible crowd at night
