User Reviews for Malibu Lagoon State Beach

As far as classic Malibu beaches go, Old Surfrider is definitely up there, but the truth is as built up as everything is around it, it's not anywhere close to the nicest beach in the area. It's not awful either. There are definitely worse beaches in the world, and there's certainly decent longboarding to be had, depending on the day, but going 10 minutes further north to Point Dume or Westward is definitely the better bet. In fact, pretty much any other beach north or south of Surfrider is better.

this definitely is not the beach to visit if you're looking for something scenic- unless scenic means 60 year old longboarders. but if you need a flat "lagoon" to try surfing~ theres really only swell for logs. there are inlets of reeking, chemically contaminated water along the beach that signs warn you to stay 100ft away from~ meanwhile, ignorant parents daze off while their kids play face first in it. ahhhahahaha welcome to LA.

Pros: it is a beach...afterall

Cons: stinky, grey, flat

I think the editors chose Malibu based upon the Baywatch episodes rather than actually visiting the beaches in Malibu. If they had they would know that the water is usually so polluted that there are warning signs posted "no swimming". Parking is impossible on weekends. No dogs are allowed on the sand. PCH is like a freeway. Other hazards may include seeing Tom Hanks without his shirt on or a rotund Britney sans the makeup.

Pros: women, people-watching

Cons: usually filthy, parking

... but they don't like us - because Malibu is dirty, smelly, impossible to park in and WE ARE WAY TOO FULL OF OURSELF! Pass on this overated stretch of hype.

Malibu Lagoon is a pretty, stereotypical LA beach, with a couple of notable exceptions: The water quality there is generally poor, the lagoon is worse, and when then sandbar dividing lagoon from ocean is opened (3-4X a year!), the Rangers post no swimming signs, due to pollution. The other distinction is the crowd, from parking on PCH (the local surfers will ALWAYS have the lot full), to finding a spot on the beach, the crowd can make this beach worth avoiding.

Pros: Scenic

Cons: Crowded, Traffic

All beaches in California are overrated! What are you looking for? Swimming, walks on the beach, nice soft sand.....you won't get it here! The only beauty are the hills to the East. Not much blue sky or white clouds.....

Pros: none

Cons: Location

As a former 1 year resident of Malibu, I can say that this is know locally as a surfer & tourist beach. The beach is never very clean, facilities poor, parking bad. The only saving grace is to tour the Adamson house. Never saw a movie star there. Zuma further north is much better. Best time to visit is in the spring/fall before the crowds come. At that time really great sunsets, no crowds, beaches clean, easy park. There are a few really nice beaches but are behind gates or not easy to find. Even beach in front of "stars" area is open to public from mean high tide line to water in accordance with state access laws.

Pros: surfers

Cons: crowded, rude surfers, dirty

From someone who grew up in Malibu, (now living out of state). I do have to say that Surfrider beach is a bit overrated, over crowded with city slickers in the summer who do not repect the beach, I have too often found dirty diapers, cigaratte butts and other unmentionables left behind by non locals. In addition you are risking your life swimming in the water after an El Nino type storm, with the runoff of the canyon and the septic systems of the "infamous" Malibu Colony contaminating the water. There are definately better beaches in Malibu, which do not need to be named for the sake of keeping out the pigs who trash whats left of the pristine beauty that is slowly fading from this once unspoiled coastline.

We just went there for vacation and it was gorgeous! The Pacific Coast Highway is a definite must see! It was so beautiful, and the beaches were great!

Know Before You Go

At low tide, beachgoers can stroll behind the homes of Malibu Colony. Just remember the high-tide line is where the "public" beach ends.
