KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!

by uclamook

I went to this place on Friday. Now, if you are used to fancy los angeles clubs with excellent music and ambiance, dont go here. This is a more kick back place that locals go to. Its cheap, the drinks are cheap ($2 cocktails) and after 11:30 the place gets packed with locals just trying to kick back and relax. However, the place has a distinct odor that smells like cat urine combined with mold. The place looks really cheap and ugly with duck taped seats, ceilings and walls. The DJ does not play top 40, and all i heard that day was 80's hip hop and other 80's songs. Some of the guests were actually dressed like its the 80's. The screan behind the DJ kept showing an 80's dance clip that was shot on a beach and people with super 80's haircuts. he drinks are cheap and strong but the bartender does not know how to mix drinks and most of the cocktails we ordered, we did not drink because it tasted aweful, so if you are going to get a drink, make it a beer or straight shots. DO NOT dress up to go there. I was dressed up and looked like an idiot. Girls were wearing jeans and sweatshirts and t-shirts, with occasional girl being a bit dressed up. The place was quite friendly though.

  • Pros: friendly service, cheap
  • Cons: ugly place, bad music, bad drinks

Serving everything from egg rolls and Tsingtao to Sinatra and hip-hop at this Chinatown bar.

by Contributor

In Short
This Chinatown bar will make you feel right at home--especially considering the bartender is a former Miss Hong Kong who calls herself Mommy. Settle in at a table, booth or the bar. If you're feeling ambitious, go ahead and exercise your pipes during the week when the karaoke is beginner-friendly. Or go on the weekend for the lounge-y jazz band favors classic Sinatra tunes but have been convinced to play "Crazy Train"--yes, the Ozzy classic.

Jazz & Karaoke Downstairs, Dancing Upstairs

by mysuebaru

On a Friday night, my date and I went to Grand Star early to get in for free and ordered won ton soup and and an sauteed eggplant dish there, which came from another restaurant but tasted great and reasonably-priced.

Then we waited a little bit for the jazz trio to start, the head jazz singer/pianist sang but a couple of the patrons asked to sing and were obliged.

Finally, we enjoyed dancing upstairs in a comfortably air-conditioned room to fast music. If you don't come early, cover is $10.

Karaoke only on Sun and Mon

by peter07

I went here for karaoke, and it seems that is being phased out. They have live bands but when I went, it was so darn empty.

Don't take your date here, he or she will be disappointed.

  • Pros: Cheap drinks, In Chinatown
  • Cons: , Not many peeps
