The Runyon Romp is not your typical 'Boot Camp'. In fact it is not a boot camp at all. It does not involve guys and girls dressed up in fatigues calling out military directions to motivate you. The Runyon Romp is an organized outdoor training program that is constantly changing to help challenge your body's strength and cardio capacity, while making sure you have fun in the process!

The Runyon Romp is between 1 hour and 1 hour 15 minutes long. It starts with a short set of stretches then work our way up the East side of Runyon, stopping 2 or 3 times to do both isometric and plyometric exercises. It also incorporates the use of resistance bands to make sure your upper body is getting a great workout as well! The only thing that you need to bring is a relentless need to succeed and it will take care of the rest...definitely a bottle of water too!!!

  • Pros: Best organized workout at Runyon Canyon
  • Cons: none...unless getting into shape is bad!!!

If you live in the area, you've got to take advantage of the park right in the middle of it all.

People watching is great. Celebrity sightings are common. Bring the dog, and enjoy the view once you make it to the top.

  • Pros: Something different!

This is such a great hike. It's a great way to work out while getting a breath taking view of the city!!!! I usually park on Gardner and Hollywood because the parking is a bit difficult, but well worth it. It usually takes me 50 mins to an hour (power walking speed) to do the whole thing...including the distance from my car. Plus it's dog friendly! :)

Apply Sunscreen, wear shoes with great traction and bring some water. On sunny days wear a hat.

I've read other reviews, I dont go here to "hike" and enjoy nature, I go here to kick my butt into shape and feel like I can conquer anything by getting up those insane steps. There is a designated parking area on Mullhollad Dr. park there walk down the paved path, there are a few houses along the way and dogs can run free. I do get kind of emotional when its hot out and people bring their Alaskan Huskies out, just seems mean to the poor furry animals. There are alot of different people here so dont worry about what you look like nobody cares trust me. It shouldnt take more than an hour to get through most of it, depends on which trails you choose, but there are some very steep hills so it will challenge you.

  • Pros: Great workout
  • Cons: Dog poo, smog at times

I love this place! Sure it smells like dog urine. Sure the parking is not easy. Sure some people don't pick up after the dog makes a mess. But if you look beyond those small things, then you'll enjoy yourself here.

I have two wonderful, tiny tea cup chihuahuas that I love with all my heart! They are inside most of the week, but Sundays are their out days. They know as soon as I wake up that they are going out for their hike. My 2.5 lbs chihuahua loves to walk the entire trail and enjoys *sorta* the other dogs. It has become my Sunday tradition

Try your best to make it out there the day after it rains. There is no pollution resting around the buildings. You can see the ocean and the air is simply wonderful - err.. after the rain that is! :) !

  • Pros: View, Exercise, Great for Dogs, Great Family Time
  • Cons: Parking, Odor

RUNYON CANYON HIKERS

On Monday Sept 22 my friend was pushing a stroller up the hill on the streets below runyon canyon and was STALKED and THREATENED by a man in a RED TRUCK.

The man made six passes, driving by her very slowly in a large red truck, and eventually parked himself in her path where witnesses were scarce. Unable to leave her baby, she had no way to escape. After changing directions several times she hailed down a passing car and was able to holler, "call the police!" which scared the man off.

Please if you go hiking don't go alone, as cell phone reception in Runyon is slim to none. Take your pepper spray! And if you see a suspicious character in a red truck, call the police!

I live a block away and am probably more sensitive than most because this is my neighborhood and I like to see it taken care of. Too many people park on the side streets jamming it up, honk their horns unecessarily, get into parking fights and are just plain rude sometimes. It's packed every day (to point where my visitors can't find parking!) and park visitors with dogs have a bad habit of not picking up after their pets. I think this park is a great resource for the community and love the trails. The hike is good excercise for both my dog and myself. I know yoga in the grassy area is popular but I'm looking forward to the day the city turns it into a parking lot so it alleviates the parking mess and pet waste all over the streets I live near. Please clean up after yourselves and be kind to others when you come to this park.

  • Pros: Great views and trails that are a good workout
  • Cons: Too many people, dog owners that don't clean up after their pets, jammed parking

I was first invited to Runyon by a date who was most patient, seeing as how I could barely make it up the hill to the front gate of the park. As a matter of fact, we had to turn around 5 minutes into the park. One time we even attempted it when I had a busted knee on the mend. That was great PT, btw. Hmmm, maybe I should rethink him. Anyhoo...years later, sometimes I do Runyon 3 times a week in about 45 minutes RT. It's all up hill until you get to the top where the 2 (not the 1) benches are, then it's all downhill. If you enter through the stinky (meaning putrid) gate, and continue straight at the fork in the road, then you will absolutely need real hiking footwear with serious treads for real gripping action once you hike past the 1 bench. It's all dirt and slick as a sliding board both up and down, not to mention as steep as one, too. I've seen people in flip flops trying to hike it. Needless to say, they admitted to falling down several times. Whoever took them there should be off their friend list forever. All shapes and sizes go there, so there's no stigma of having to be a tiger-hiker, hard body in a revealing midriff. As a matter of fact, when I started hiking Runyon, I weighed 35 lbs. more than I do now. Today, I enjoy wearing my Lululemons, also with no stigma. Very friendly folks who aren't in your face, but who willingly talk to you as the moment strikes them or you. A lot of cute doggies of all sizes, ginormous to tea cup. They are not on a leash, however. So, if you're worried about your tiny baby with other bigger dogs, then you'll have to carry it all the time. Downfalls would be, the untrained and/or uncontrolled dogs that run and/or fight each other between your legs. Note to owners, it's not cute to see your sweet, little poochie turn into an alpha male out in "the wild." That's how dog bites happen. And yes, your dog does bite. It just doesn't bite you. Who else will serve him food and plastic wrap his excrement?

  • Pros: Great cardio and legs workout
  • Cons: Smell at the labeled, entrance gate

Last week while visiting my friend in Los Angeles she suggested that we go to Runyon Canyon for an outdoor yoga session and senic hike. I was really excited to get a chance at yoga outdoors, and it was gorgeous! I recommend it highly; the entire session all you can hear are birds singing and smell the sweet flowers all around you. A must experience!

  • Pros: Free! The do have a donation box
  • Cons: Parking- get there early as we had to do several laps around the block before getting a spot

Having never been on a hike before, but needing an affordabe excursion to take my Little Sister (as in Big Brother/Big Sisters) on, I chose Runyon because of previous reviews I'd read about the 'off-leash' dogs and scenic views - I'm a dog lover like many who go here. I was a little put off by some of the negatives others had mentioned (parking, stool odors) and my own inability to figure out exaclty how to get there (3 entrances, no signage). I wound up chosing to go to Runyon anyway because I figured if I couldn't find my way, I'd just drive over to Griffith Park instead.

Well, I was able to find parking with relative ease (got there at 10:45am) but did notice a little more congestion as we left (12:10pm). It just so happened that it rained yesterday, so the clear and picturesque view of the 'Hollywood' sign, the Griffith Observatory, Pacific Beach and High Rise Buildings/City View reminded me of how fortunate I am to live in Los Angeles; and how seldom I give myself the opportunity to stand back, take a moment, and take it all in. I only experienced 'stool odor' in 2-3 spots where owners decided to not pick up after their dogs, but other than that, it was clean and fresh (I'm sure I can thank the rain for that).

My only regret was that I didn't take my dogs (wanted to test it out first in case it was to long/difficult for them) or my camera.

Oh and I did see the actress from Gilmore Girls (the daughter) on my way out. I don't care for celebrity sightings (seeing 'em on tv or in the movies is enough for me) - but if that's what you're into - this may be considering one of their water holes.

  • Pros: Dogs, Scenery, Workout
  • Cons: People don't always pick up after their dogs.
