Great Tuna Fish Sandwich

by abraz at Citysearch

I just had another delicious tuna fish sandwich, with the works on grilled rye - not a tuna melt mind you - I like my tuna cold - it was big, flavorful and the tuna was right from heaven - light and fresh. I had to have the waiter pinch me because I thought I was dreaming. If you like burgers, try the Shack Burger - it comes with a butterflied Louisiana Hot Link on top - a tad indulgent. The Shack is a Philly Sports Bar of sorts - but more of a neighborhood bar supported by Philly fans... so needless to say they also make a mean cheese-steak.

Customer Service?? - A Joke...

by NFLFan at Citysearch

What a joke...this place just doesn't get it. Today I came in for the 4th time in a week. Thought I'd really found a cool hang-out near my place for drinks and neighbors and the sports page during Happy Hour, but no - sadly, I was mistaken. The owner would rather hang on to his .75 cents worth of wholesale bread and roast beef than hang on to a new, potentially regularly returning customer. To explain; after already dropping $25 on a dinner and a couple of drinks I will still hungry. So I asked for a 1/2 order of a sandwich. That's all - nothing difficult or surprising or unheard of in any casual dining place, much less a pub/dive called "The Shack". Instead of a "sure!, I can make that work", I got not one, but two lectures on why they couldn't do that because it would mean "wasting a portioned" bread roll and ounce of roast beef. When I countered that this seemed a bit silly, when the other half of the bread roll and the roast beef could be put to other uses or saved for another 1/2 order, the owner turned red in the face and said "I'm sorry that you think I'M silly...." wtf?? He took it all personal! So I told him I didn't think HE was silly, just the policy of no 1/2 orders. He and his bartenders just walked away, like petulant children. This was AFTER I calmly explained that it was my fourth visit in a week and that I really liked this place! It was like they didn't really give a sh_t about losing a brand new customer, who had been tipping reallly well! With customer service like this, no wonder each time I was in there between 5pm and 7pm I could not count more than 6 other customers on any day. Hey Shack! - enjoy that .75 cents of savings! You just lost a customer who potentially would have brought in a few hundred in the next several months!

  • Pros: It's not crowded during Happy Hour
  • Cons: There's a reason it's not crowded during Happy Hour!

Great Burgers, "Cheers"-type Feel

by LA808Girl at Citysearch

One thing I'll say about The Shack? It definitely has the "Cheers" type of feeling ... you know, where everybody knows your name? Hubby and I went for lunch today and there were quite a few regulars in there, and all the servers knew their names. :)

Beyond that, The Shack is known by some for having great burgers, so my hubby tried The Shack Burger (comes topped with a butterflied Louisiana Hot Link on top!). I wasn't feeling a burger today, so I settled on the fish & chips. I will say that what I received appeared to be more of a "Chips w/ a Side of Fish" rather than Fish & Chips...regardless, the fish was a tad on the greasy side, but still good; the fries were my favorite part. And I got a LOT of them.

I'd try this place again, especially during college football season (Go Bucks!)... Note: it's also an Eagles bar as well! :)

by lauraine2 at Citysearch

we would say if the bartenedrs are not familiar with you, dont know you , thrye not the friendliest, and its gonna take a while to get a drink at the bar, and if 1 of the owners is not sober get ready for some rude stuff...foods ok,...minimal parking in back; totally dead on a sat night, go figure..has potential, but not yet happening and its been there awhile, most of the reuglars there are in your face wasted,,we pass

  • Pros: local place for locals
  • Cons: lack of friendliness fomr owner/ employees..

Order L.A.'s "best" hamburger or a cheese steak while cheering on Philly at this raucous Santa Monica sports bar.

by Contributor at Citysearch

In Short
Philadelphia may be the city of brotherly love, but that doesn't mean the residents are known for their reserved demeanor--especially when it comes to sporting events. "Rambunctious" is a much better way to describe a Philly crowd. That passion flourishes here, where ex-Philly residents root for their home teams. Eagles, Sixers, Flyers and Phillies memorabilia decorate the room, with television sets and a couple of pool tables spread throughout. How could anyone not be happy when there are five Philly cheese steaks on the menu? Not to mention a self-declared "best" hamburger in town? During football season, expect to see a sea of green Eagles jerseys fill the bar (and the front sidewalk), when this place truly becomes a home away from home.

A time and place...

by marpop at Citysearch

There is a time and place for everything, and sometimes you just want a burger. The Shack does make real good turkey burgers (for those interested). They do onion rings, fries, salads - they have nice hot dinner meals - there is something for everyone, but remember this is also a bar. They have the tv's in the corners of the room, and if there isn't a pool table, it feels like there should be. They do have a patio out back, so on a nice day you can sit outside. The pricing is reasonable to higher-than-you'd-expect, but after all it is located in Santa Monica right on Wilshire (just west of 26th St.). If you are in the area, and you need to grab lunch with a friend, this is a great place. If you are with your buddies and want to grab some food and beer - go for it!

  • Pros: location, food, patio
  • Cons: price, parking

Good "beer garden"

by laurafinny at Citysearch

While there is nothing extra special about the shack, that is the beauty of it. There are no lines, no hype, no waiting. Just decent burgers (including buffalo burgers!) and pitchers of beer. Great place to go if you dont want a hassle of any kind.

awesome cheesesteak

by njemt at Citysearch

just moved out from east coast and, having been to pat's and jim's several times, I have to say that the shack holds its own. And the rolls are soft, which I kind of like. service was great. went for the eagles-skins game the other nite, great atmosphere (even though I'm a Giants fan). all the paraphenelia is impressive. I have to say if I were an eagles fan (fortunately I'm not) I'd be there every sunday, but I hear there's a Shack for us G'ints faithful down in playa del rey, my next stop for the G'ints-Iggles showdown this wknd.

  • Pros: Cheesesteaks, Fries, Service
  • Cons: None

Just like home!!!

by toughman97 at Citysearch

I was born and raised in Philly, so when I moved out here for school, I felt like I needed something to bring me back to Philly. And I found it. The Shack is just like being back home. I didnt know about it until after football season, but I am going to make it a point of making it down to this place for every eagles game there is. It has an awesome atmosphere, and the cheesesteaks are as close as you will get to an actual philly cheesesteak. the only difference is, which is the key ingredient to an authentic philly cheesesteak is the roll, it makes or breaks the entire thing. Without the best rolls, the people at the shack do an excelent job pulling it off.

  • Pros: Philly Bar, Owner is from Philly, E A G L E S!!!
  • Cons: No Philly Rolls, No Yuengling Lager
