Like yelling into the abyss

by JoeyShmo

The most disorganized place to see a band ever. Do not go here unless you REALLY REALLY love the band.

Just one of many examples: A secret show. Website says "Get here early. First come first served, so do not get out of line." We get there an hour and a half early. Get in line. Do not get out of line. Wait 2 hours in line. Make it to the front of line. Are told: Only people with wristbands will be allowed in." People walk up with wristbands they've received earlier in the day. They walk around us and are let in! I'm not saying we should have been ahead of them. I'm saying that a venue that actually cares about it's customers is going to makes sure people aren't wasting their time in line for no reason. To top it off, the skanky girl behind us was being "helpful" (read: a douche) with quips such as "Oh, I know. Stupid secret shows. Stupid venues that host them." Cocky because she had a wristband and slept with the band leader when she was lucky enough to meet him when he was drunk enough to actually be interested. Going to the Echo is just like being that girl. Drink enough and you might be able to plug your nose and pretend you're enjoying being used and disregarded.

One question: Why?

by jochu

Cutting music, okay. But what I was listening to my first time at the Echo was not music. More like "noise." And it was hip hop night, for God's sake. There was a dance floor but NOBODY danced. The tv screens against the walls flickered with disturbing images. Everything was just really abstract that night, and not in a cool way. In a boring way. After a while people did get up to dance, but really by themselves, to the beat-bopping rapper on stage. There were absolutely no beats though...just...words and noise, again. Definitely NOT a place to go with a big group who are ready to shake and jiggy.

Best 5 spot i ever spent

by sunkencitylou

You never forget your first time..... My first time at the "spot" as my buds cal it was about a month back. A good friend of mine came back from Spain, and we rustled up some old random friends and made the trek from San Pedro, ca about 45 mins out. I was supposed to not go, cuz i was the guy just out off work, being the grump not bringing any extra clothes for myself, so i rocked the suit, felt a bit odd, but i stepped off the back patio, and all my worries faded to green,. purple, and blue, but needless to say i had no probs after that! I have been back twice since, and always dig everything the whole thing, the club is the perfect spot to meet and listen to quality music, and meet quality people. Being from a small city like san pedro, finding another nook somewhere out there where you can just vibe, is awesome. I know the sunken city sweaters will be seen all throgh the "spot" from now on

New Years...

by vinodnaga

...at the Echo was a drag. The headline band that we went to see was only allowed to play four songs before the djs tookover during a break and never let them back on. If this was the idea all along, it wasn't advertised that way. No sign of the alleged complimentary champagne at midnight, and the bouncers stood by idly while a skinhead-looking character moshed into a couple in front of him to drive them away. Not cool.

With a little better management this could be a great venue for live music, but the guys in charge seem to take the crowds for granted - we'll take our boozing elsewhere.

  • Pros: Good acts
  • Cons: Bad vibes, misleading advertising

Reggae is Freakin Awesome & Don't Miss the Mashups

by oddria

I've been to DUB CLUB on Wed. night and BOOTIE L.A. every first Saturday of the Month and they are both different vibes but totally awesome. DUB CLUB has great reggae live preformers and the vibe is totally relaxed , great to unwind on a weekday w/ some jammin music and Red Stripe Beer. BOOTIE L.A. what can I say ? Freakin Awesome, the music is great , they "mash" together all type s of songs like AC/DC and Beyonce. Carefree fun time w/ none of that Hollywood attitude or cheesiness.

  • Pros: Great music and totally unpretentious crowd, A genuine good time
  • Cons: The area around can be kinda scary, More Echo Park than Silverlake

Excellent music/dancing on Wednesday nights (Dub Club)

by jericho1ne

Nothing but dub/roots reggae. Come here to skank, boogie on down, whatever. No dress code, the crowd is chill and integrated (much unlike the rest of LA). The doorman is an a-hole, but other than that, I can't think of any negatives. Get in line before 10:30, or you'll be waiting for an hour. Regardless, the cover is $5 past 10pm. You can always find free parking in the two adjacent lots about a half block down the street.

  • Pros: Excellent dance scene, chill crowd
  • Cons: Long wait on Wednesday night if you come too late

Why the Echo?

by desireedesigner

I always heard that the Echo was a great place to relax and hear good music. But when I finally go there the music was bad, the atmosphere stale, parking a bitch, the brew selection pathetic, and I got kicked out at 9pm for a change of venues and would of had to pay ANOTHER covercharge to stay after hanging outside for half an hour. What a lame Saturday night.

Sparkle Motion

by keithwags

The Echo is a great place to see a show. The inside looks like some kind of indie senior prom, with the disco ball and what not. Drinks are decently priced and a lot of great bands come through there. Lots of friendly folks too. Go there. Now.

  • Pros: Atmosphere
  • Cons: None

Echo Park hideaway puts a fresh and funky Eastside spin on the dance club genre.

by Contributor

Everybody knows there's a heavy hipster herd of artists, musicians, writers and the like residing on L.A.'s Eastside, namely Echo Park and Silver Lake. And it's also well known that, with this crowd, under-the-radar music is a must. And this cousin of the scene-making Spaceland is a great spot for new grooves. Located in a former Latin disco, the dusty floor, sticky vinyl booths and mirrored walls may resemble the interior of a seedy strip club, but this place is about fresh sounds, not fancy digs. Every DJ-oriented night is different, and offers a chance to see and hear groundbreaking styles and sounds before anyone else. There's a definite freestyle fellowship that extends from the DJs and performers to an audience comprised of b-boy cats and funky felines. This vibrant vibe creates an abstract ambience where anything can--and does--happen on the stage and the dance floor.
