Lard on a Bun
by WestsideFOTO at Citysearch
I really wanted to love Johnnie's. The 50's era architecture and signage always caught my eye as I drove down Sepulveda Boulevard. I made a mental note to try it the next time I had a craving for a hot pastrami sandwich. That day finally came, and what a disappointment!
The waitress asked if I preferred my pastrami lean or fatty. I said, "as lean as possible, please". But, the sandwich delivered to me was almost pure lard with very little of the lean, pink pastrami I was hoping for. When I pointed that out, the waitress said that was as lean as it comes. I tried a couple bites and couldn't eat anymore. Pure lard on a bun. Yuck!
Last night on television I saw the Huell Howser (PBS) episode where he visited Langers in downtown L.A. and Johnnie's in Culver City. He was doing a comparison of the pastrami sandwiches. It was very obvious watching it that he much preferred the lean, dark pink Langer's pastrami over the fatty, greasy Johnnie's version -- even though he was too polite to openly state his disappointment on the air. His facial expressions and lack of praise for the Johnnie's pastrami were the exact opposite of what he displayed and stated when tasting the Langer's.
Next time I have a craving for hot pastrami, I'm heading to Langer's.

Worst Service I Have Ever Seen
by No Name Provided at Citysearch
What's so unfortunate is that my family, friends and co-workers have enjoyed the food and service from Johnnies for many years. Yesterday while dining at Johnnies with a co-worker our experience was very unacceptable. Not only was the server very rude, the manner in which she provided service was beyond belief. Without much care, she flopped down our drinks spilling contents on the table, which she did not apologize for, nor did she clean it up. Upon the delivery my food I found used straw wrappings in the basket and underneath my sandwich wrapping. Instead of coming out to our table and checking on us to see if we needed anything she would look out the window. To top off this experience, she over charged us $10 for the meal. I will never eat at Johnnies again. If it were her purpose to make our experience horrible, trust me, she went above and beyond. I found the server to be quite pleasant with the non-African American customers.

Great Pastrami Sandwiches
by JonSoleymani at Citysearch
if you love pastrami, check out Johnnie's in Culver City. The food is great, cheap, and fun. Either before or after a night of drinking in the area, nothing hits the spot like a Johnnie's famous pastrami!
- Pros: Great food, cheap prices
