Good food, great setting
by lottedixon
Moonshadows has of the best patios in Los Angeles. Their outdoor seating area is on the water with private cabana-style tables and is one of my favorite spots for drinks in the afternoon. My only complaint is that the Ahi burger isn't available on weekends...
- Pros: Outdoor patio, view, cocktails
Food/Service= 1 star, View= 5 stars.
by GwenPenny
First off, if you are going for great food or service, this is not the place. If you're looking for a pretentious, trendy, dancie lounge/bar, this IS the place.
However, there is one corner at Moonshadows for boring, reclusive East Coasters/New Englanders who sometimes miss their stinky ocean shanty neighborhoods (especially if you live in LA/BevHills and not near one of the beach communities)-
The one 'smoking corner' at the back that sits over the ocean- It's away from the loud dance music on the deck thing where those couches are, has only 8 barstools, but full menu ordering power. You can also smoke butts, and there is NO music or heaters (for those who like it a bit chilly-if not, bring a sweater). It's the perfect place to go with a lover or friend, sit and listen to the waves.
Because this area is more of an 'infidel/outcast' detention area (smokers and people waiting to be seated), it is not hustling, not loud and not obnoxious as the rest of the place, etc...
You can watch, smell and HEAR the ocean while you munch so-so food, and drink so-so drinks. Usually the alright waiters/busboys run this detention area I speak of-Sit inside and you're bound to get a crabby waitress.
FYI, look out for the hostess, she's got a huge insect up there-maybe a Eusattus Dune Beetle? In any case, the view and relative solace of this one corner is worth the aggravation of navigating your way through the legions of clowns, unless you're there for the circus.
- Pros: Hear and Smell the Ocean & Smoke!!!!
- Cons: Bad Service, Food OK, Only Valet Parking
Sunday Brunch anyone?
by AlwaysAnOptimist
Sunday brunch here is easily the most amzing on PCH. Order the heck out of their mimosas and the lobster omelette. Need I say more?
- Pros: Everything
- Cons: The valet wait is sometimes long when large crowds come in, but the valet service is excellent.
MOONSHADOWS CHARGES YOUR ACCOUNT 3X THE BILL VALUE
by ratejosh
Moonshaddows will authorize your account for up up to 3 time the value of the purchase. I had some drinks there last week, and the billed me $60, when i signed for $58, and THEN they authorized my account for $175! This meant that I was unable to access $175 in funds for over 5 days. That's just not kosher in my books.

The Best Mojitos
by Lindley53
Was just there July 1, 2008. My daughter, bestfriend and myself met up with a long time friend that we hadn't seen in almost 30 years. She lives in Santa Barbara and suggested meeting at Moonshadows. The bartender was very personable (not to mention the most beautiful blue eyes) and made the best Mojito. The food was very good and the service was great. We stayed a while catching up way past our lunch and never felt that they wanted us to leave. The view is what any visitor to Malibu would expect. I would definitely visit again when in California.
- Pros: Views, Mojitos
Amazing all around...
by loveforgoodfood
I was a bit reluctant to eat here, thinking it might be overrated, but WOW! The food was phenomenal, the chef (Joaquin?) even came out to see how our meal was, and it was excellent (tuna tartar and the short ribs- melt in your mouth DELICIOUS!!) .. We went on a weeknight and they had a live DJ playing the most perfect chill music - exactly what I would want sitting literally ON the sea. Could you get a better view?! The hostess was fabulous, never made us feel out of place and although we had to wait, it was beyond worth it. I saw what I believe was the owner walking around (overheard the waitress), checking in on people, very genuinely caring about the diner's experience. The BEST place to take anyone coming in from out of town, as well as anyone who thinks Malibu is too far (it isn't!) Thank you Moonshadows, for restoring my faith in local food and fare. Will be back many times! Love it!
- Pros: Service, Food, Music
- Cons: None
Wonderful Ambiance
by ediesedgwick
This place has a great ambiance! Wonderful views - the service can be slow - but that is to be expected at popular Malibu restarants, although I have always been treated well. I have been several times, and never that impressed with the food - but I am very picky. The menu however is put together nicely - its seasonal, the drinks are wonderful - and again the views are great. Great to take an out - of - town guest .
- Pros: Views - Drinks -
- Cons: Food is only OK
AWFUL SERVICE, RUDE HOSTESS
by ashleyfein
We had a small birthday part of 11 people..let me remind you we had reserved days in advance that we wanted a ocean view, we still had to wait over an hour to be seated by the rude hostess. We waited another 20-30 mins for our orders to be taken for drinks...another 1-1:50 for our dinner orders to be taken. JUST AWFUL SERVICE with a bill over $1500...I highly dont recommend this place.
Run down place!!!
by aprilhill1
I Went for dinner and cocktails. The place was really rundown. The wait staff was terrible. The food was decent. The service was what really brought down the night. The music was pounding a club beat that was strange while eating chart house type of food. If you are under 25 years old you might like this place. The view of the ocean was great.
- Pros: View, Young people
- Cons: run down, bad service, expensive
