My boyfriend and I love soul food and was really excited to try this new restaurant. The atmosphere was nice and resemebled a down south, mississippi feel with low lighting, dark rustic table and chairs and black and white autographed photos of celebrities. I ordered the sasauge with beans and rice with mac and cheese and mash potatoes and gravey. My boyfriend order the ox tail with collard greens and rice with gravey. The food look terrific coming out but turned into an ABSOLUTE DISAPPOINTMENT. The sasuage was average, the beans were overcooked, the mac and cheese tasted like it had been sitting out for a while under a heat lamp and the mash potatoes and gravey was plain. The ox tail was very tender but lacked flavor, the collard greens were OVERsalted and the rice and gravey was mushy. When finished with out meal, we waited to ask for the check. After 20 minutes of no service, my boyfriend got up and walked to the back to ask for our check. This place is not worth trying.
Pros: Ambience
Cons: Poor Serice and subpar food

Although I live in the Inland Empire, I visit Aunt Kizzy's at least 3-4 times each year, especially in August for my birthday! I love the food, especially the cornbread and beef shortribs, but I really go for the atmosphere and the way I'm treated by the staff. The hostess Hynia is always warm and welcoming, server Homer is always friendly, but I really love Lenica, who is like family! I have met the owner, dined next to celebrities, and been given music tips/info from the cook, George. I fell in love with Kizzy's on my first visit in 1989 when the music stopped playing (great old-school R&B/jazz), and a Stevie Wonder-like version of "Happy Birthday" begin playing. The entire restaurant was encouraged to clap and sing along in celebration of the pleased birthday guest, and I've been hooked ever since!! Being made to feel "special" is a fantastic feeling and you can not put a high enough price on that, in my opinion!! I have celebrated birthdays at Kizzy's yearly, as well as family high school and college graduations, recoveries from illnesses, LA Laker wins, as well as "just because it makes us feel good" occasions!! We are ALWAYS treated with love, and respect from the entire staff, and for that reason alone, Aunt Kizzy's Backporch will always be my favorite restaurant!!!
Pros: Ambience, Friendly Staff
Cons: None

i had the fried chicken which was absolutely delicious. it was crispy and juicy, fried without distracting breading. the sides, however, were either ok or below average. it came with stuffing or mashed potatos (i chose stuff. it was below average) and two sides. i had the corn and okra (a bit overcooked but tasted ok) and the mac and cheese (bland and overcooked. definitely below average) my husband had the jambalaya which was just average. there was plenty of it but there was a bit too much rice and not enough other stuff. my husband tried the collar greens. definitely not recommended. it was bitter and overcooked.

We were dissappointed to find out that it's cafeteria style if you go before dinner time. (Of course, I should have read this on Citysearch before going). That aside, the food really wasn't that great. The food was really salty, even for me (I love salty). And the atmosphere was kind of like "we don't care" The staff was friendly and accommodating... but the overall experience was just "ok".

I ate there several years ago. If you ever go, be sure to get the smothered pork chop and the sweet potatoes. OMG - to die for.

I like southern cooking but maybe I also like flavor because this did not cut it for me. The cornbread muffins that came with our meal were okay, but I've had better. The service wasn't too bad- they were really nice and not too slow. The chicken fried steak was covered in so much thick grazy that you couldn't taste the chicken. The gravy itself had no flavor and tasted like spoonfuls of pure fat. The mac and cheese was too mushy and reminded me of something I had in my high school cafeteria back in the day (and that's not a good thing!) The okra was overcooked as well. My friend's pork chop was passable, but not something I would order again, nor were the collared greens. All in all, I wouldn't come back. Just because southern cooking includes a lot of frying and fat, doesn't mean it can't have flavor!
Cons: food

My brother, daughter and I , went out to enjoy each other's company and to have a great dinner. After arriving at Aunt Kizzy's we were seated at a broken table and had to move to another one. Where do I begin to expain the rest of our experience. It took more then 15 minutes before our drink order was even taken. When we finally placed our food order and it arrived at our table. The server spilled grease on my pants and was'nt even apologetic. She mumbled something under her breath and then said do you want some club soda. She brought club soda on a dirty towel that looked like it was used to clean the kitchen floor. If that was'nt bad enough. My brothers red beans were cold and when he asked the server to bring him some hot ones say replied "They came out the same batch as the other ones". By this time we had had enough. Another server came over and asked if was needed anything else. I told him about our TERRIBLE and INCONSIDERATE server and we would like the check. He told us that he would send the owner right over. That's right you heard me load and clear, OWNER after explaining our horrible experience she offered me $5.00 for the dry cleaning bill and did not attemp to hear me when I told her about the horrible customer service and dirty dish towel. Listen up folks!!!!!!! Do not eat here it's not what it use to be. Aunt Kizzy who ever she is would be embarressed.
Pros: You have to be kidding (right)!!!!
Cons: need I say more?

The fried chicken, smothered pork chops, collard greens, macaroni and cheese and peach cobbler at this place ALL compete with those at my beloved Jordan's Cafe. The ambience in here is relaxing, and reminds me of eating in the front room at a relative's house. I've heard about some celeb-sitings at this place, but I could easily miss superstar faces while I'm concentrating on my food.

I know Britney eats at Aunt Kizzy's, and so does a whole bunch of other celebrities, but I still like M&M's Soul Food better. To their credit, Aunt Kizzy's has great food, and a wide selection at that. Their creamed corn, BBQ chicken, pork chop, spinach, mac and cheese were all winners. M&M's Soul Food has much better iced tea though! Their walls reads like a who's who, with all of the celebs that have eaten there. Maybe you can run into Britney, her mom & little sister sometime when you eat here. I've had no such luck...yet.
Pros: Food, Service, Decor, Value
Cons: none

Very warm, welcoming atmosphere with red checked tablecloths and friendly service. Simple menu with lots of Southern favorites. Go hungry - this food is dense. In fact, even if you go hungry you'll probably walk out of there with a heavy leftovers bag! Then you'll have a delicious lunch for the next day!
