Rude, Unprofessional Management !! - Do not go here
by JessicaGray040 at Citysearch
My review is actually different from the other reviews in that I had a catered event at Back on the Beach and I absolutely hated it. The management was absolutely rude and unprofessional. I had approached WHITLEY, who was one of the lead managers that night, with a concern about timing of the food coming out corresponding to the schedule of my event. She rudely said, "That's not my problem" then turned around to continue chatting with the staff. Now, I paid good money for my event, but she chose to ignore my concerns to flirt with the male staff which I feel is entirely rude and unprofessional. Furthermore, my clients at the event explicitly over heard her making rude comments about some of my guests such as how obese they were and other rude remarks such as these. When confronted, she smiled and said did not say those things... essentially she did not take responsibility for her actions. Due to her lack of professionalism and her unusually large amount of time she was spending with the male staff that night, some of the food orders came too soon, were cold by the time they got there, or were just plain wrong. If you want to have an event run by an employee who pays more attention to the male staff than your event, then I strongly advise you to go ahead and book it here. I will NEVER return to this establishment again or any other affiliated establishment nor recommend this place to any other company as long as this employee is there.
Slow... slow... service
by Sam91316 at Citysearch
Stopped here to share cold drinks and a basket of fries on the beach after a long walk from Malibu. Were quickly seated at an outside table. Gorgeous we thought. Then we waited 15 minutes for menus. Then another 15 minutes for our order to be taken. It was another 30 minutes before our drinks and fries showed up. Granted it was the middle of a Sunday afternoon but there were plenty of waitstaff about - they just didn't seem to be interested. Many other tables around us were complaining about the slow service too and the manager would placate them but nothing was done to improve the speed. And yes... after asking for the check we had to wait another long time before we gave up, got up and paid at the register. Appalling. Over an hour for fries and two drinks.
We've had breakfast here before and always been happy. The recent renovations have resulted in a crop of lazy waitstaff and an ineffective manager.
- Pros: The view
- Cons: The service
Great beach cafe!
by VL57 at Citysearch
Back on the beach cafe is a great place to go to for casual lunch or sunday's brunch. They have a variety of good salads, burgers, omelets, pasta... and the view is just amazing. It is usually crowded on sundays and you might have to wait 30-45 minutes if you want to seat outside on their patio but it worth the wait.
Decent prices and pretty good quality for a beach cafe.
- Pros: Great prices, amazing view
Breakfast is a breeze at Back on the Beach in Santa Monica!
by Valerie L at Citysearch
What made my experience at Back on the Beach cafe special was that it wasn't very crowded and their freshly squeezed orange juice was just like the kind I make at home. It's a very unpretentious little restaurant and it is clean and affordable. Service is prompt and I am definitely coming back to Back on the Beach as soon as I can.
- Pros: Best view in town (what beats the Pacific ocean I ask you?)
- Cons: I like to get my feet sandy but if it's not you, sit inside!
My favorite spot in Santa Monica
by denag at Citysearch
The food is always tasty even if its not the best you'll ever have. You don''t eat at Back on the Beach for the food - it's all about The Beach. To sit and have brunch with your toes digging in the sand on a lazy sunday is simply the best. The breakfast quesidilla is tasty and makes you forget you're eating egg whites instead of the real thing.
- Pros: The Beach! Relaxing and easy brunch spot
- Cons: Slow service, food could be better.
At this laid-back beach cafe, meals include panoramic ocean views, fresh sea breezes and sand underneath your feet.

In Short
Easily accessed by in-line skates and bicycles, this relaxed beach cafe is filled with the sounds of international tourists and cell phone-toting Malibu moguls, accompanied by the roar of the tide. The kitchen turns out all-American favorites, including spicy mesquite chicken sandwiches and juicy grilled burgers, each served with crisp shoestring fries. The popular weekend brunch menu features egg-white omelets with mini-scones, breakfast quesadillas and thick-battered brioche French toast.
Enjoy a Great Brunch on the Beach
by tj1972 at Citysearch
Perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely brunch with the whole family. Kids will have a wonderful time playing in the sand and on the nearby swings. Food is good and reasonably priced. Portion sizes are perfect.
- Pros: Right on the beach, Perfect for Kids, Cheap Parking with Validation
- Cons: Service can be slow
Best brunch in L.A.
by italiansniper11 at Citysearch
This is definitely "the" place to be in L.A. on a sunny day. The brunch is fantastic. The sandwiches are awesome and the salads (especially the Fred's salad) are delicious. The cons of this place are that the wait is sometimes long on the weekends and you get sand in your shoes if you eat outside. (wear sandals)
Great service
by uclagirl at Citysearch
We had a large group (about 18) for a birthday party, and they kept enlarging our table, served us quickly and pleasantly, and didn't confuse the orders. The sand dabs were very good, and I'd have them again. The sign is hard to spot, though, and the adjacent city parking lot entrance and exit are easy to confuse.
- Pros: service
