BEST CAKES

by MAYRA21

I AM NOT A CAKE LOVER BUT WHEN MY DAUGHTERS GRANDMA BROUGHT HER A CAKE FROM

YAMAZAKI FOR HER 3RD B-DAY (SHE'S 7 NOW) I JUST LOVED IT. IT'S NOT TOO SWEET, THE BREAD'S

JUST DELICIOUS AND THE FILLING FROM NATUARAL FRUITS AH! YOU JUST HAVE TO TRY IT. I HAVE

HAD GUEST THAT ARE NOW REGULAR CUSTOMERS . I DRIVE OVER AN HOUR JUST TO GO THERE BUT IT'S WORTH IT. MATTER OF FACT I'LL BE PICKING UP A CAKE FOR MY HUSBAND ON SUNDAY. EVER SINCE I ONLY BUY MY CAKES FROM THEM!

One of Little Tokyo's oldest bakeries, this charming spot sticks with traditional Japanese pastries, but rolls with the times with Western desserts as well.

In Short
Since 1938, this family-owned patisserie has been a cozy quick-stop for piping hot coffee and warm savory mans (soft white buns with sweet or salty fillings). Stretched across the woody old-fashioned store, a glaring neon white display case is compactly lined with both Eastern and Western pastries and fruit-topped cakes that are made fresh every morning. The shop is modest in many ways: Decorations, if any, are plain, and lukewarm pastries are still heated in boxy 7-11-like ovens. The customers, mostly regulars, come and go in a matter of minutes, but stragglers are occasionally lured in by the waft of freshly-baked bread.

Hits: Most pastries and a cup of joe are under $3 each. Not only perfect for snacking, the bakery also makes a variety of stomach-filling sandwiches, pizza and curry buns. Because the space is so small, the store props three to four tables outside.

Misses: The register takes cash only, and bills higher than $20 aren't allowed.

Great bread & cream puffs

by netter1

Unlike Mikazawa just across the way, Yamazaki bakery is more what one expects when walking into a bakery. There are shelves of fresh bread...and cases full of fluffy cakes and pastries. If you are a lover of creme puffs, you have to try these. Personally, I'm partial to the "cocoa puff" baked in a small Hawaiian bakery on Oahu...but ... well...don't get to Hawaii much lately. These definitely do in a pinch.

Sweet Treats at a Little Tokyo Bakery

by lwmango

I always swing by this Japanese bakery after eating at Oomasa in the Village Plaza. Their chocolate covered cream puffs (with chocolate cream) are amazing as are their fruit tarts with piped cream that are in the shape of small dogs (almost too cute to eat). I also enjoy their ham and green onion pizza pastries and their weiner pans (hot dogs wrapped in a soft roll). Their breads are also delicious; they're thickly sliced and very soft. Prices are amazing here too, just be sure to go early so they don't sell out of your favorites!

  • Pros: Parking, Quick Service, Fresh Products
  • Cons: Sell out of some items quickly, close early

It's the bread.

by intlfoods

Their bread is ridiculously tasty! I have never tasted such good bread. Every now and then, we would hop down there just to pick up a loaf of fresh white bread. Other items also included are the cakes and sweets, like any other oriental bakeries, it's such a delight. Everything is fantastic, but above all, the bread!
