MSG Hazard!!!
by Charlie Saint V
Beware! This place uses MSG on everything. If you're like me, it will ruin the rest of your evening like it did mine. Stay Away!!!
- Pros: Sizzling soup
- Cons: MSG causes massive Migrain and no warning!
HORRIBLE SERVICE
by USCgirl
I planned my fiance's surprise birthday party (2/28/09) at Yang Chow. We expected 45 guests to attend. Reservations were for 8pm. If not enough guests showed up to fill 4 tables at 8pm, they were going to take the tables away after 8:15.
At 8pm none of our 4 tables were ready. At 8:30 one table was ready. When asked what they planned to do about our hungry unseated guests, they said very rudely they had no control over the other party who was occupying our space. All we could do was wait until they were done. Despite the fact I had called two weeks in advance to create a pre-set menu and reserve the space, our tables had not been reserved.
Finally, at 9pm we had three tables. The fourth table meant for the rest of our guests was in the other room. Instead of 45 guests, we now had 35 because the rest were not able to wait.
To be compensated for our time and incovenience we asked for a discount on our meal. They only agreed to a 20% discount after we told them we were going to leave to another restaurant (at this point the lady manager told her supervisor in Cantonese--not realizing my mom understands and speaks Cantonese fluently-- that if we wanted to leave then we should leave). The supervisor asked us to stay, however, did not apologize for the poor service nor attitude of his manager.
During the meal we had to ask multiple times for ice and our water was never re-filled.
After when it was time to pay for the meal, the discount was not given to us. We had to ask them to take 20% off as agreed. Finally they printed a new receipt with the discount
While the food was good, the HORRIBLE SERVICE left a bitter taste in our mouths.
- Pros: Good Slippery Shrimp
- Cons: Rude Staff
Great food and ambiance - well worth the trip to C-Town

My friend and I came here for the first time and everything was WONDERFUL!!! I called four hours ahead ot make reservations, and sooooo happy I did. When we got there at 7, there was a line to the door and we were seated immediately. There was already water and tea set out which was nice. We had Moo Shoo Chicken and the Slippery Shrimp, BOTH WERE SOOOO GOOD!!! One small quip I have is that they should include rice with the dishes and not have it extra. But for $18 each (including tip) we left very happy and at 8 pm there was a line forming ot the door. It is worth the trip from Beverly Hills to Chinatown anytime!
- Pros: Unique mouth watering dishes
- Cons: If you are impatient - RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST!!!
Sometimes I Crave Slippery Shrimp...
by jazzgasm
I've been to Yang Chow about 7 times now and I always get the slippery shrimp. I've had bites of other peoples food, and I never really like it (hence the 4 stars, not 5) but the shrimp is so good, that it's worth it just for that dish! I hate to be cliche (everyone loves it) but it really is the best.
- Pros: Slippery Shrimp!
- Cons: Ambience is kinda dull, as are some of the other dishes. DEF make a reservation!
Not what I expected!

Canned mushrooms in the wonton soup! YUCK. Cups had bleach smelling residue. Noodles were flooded in sauce, cooks were yelling in the kitching the whole time.
Sooooo tasty

We ordered family style for a group of six and every single dish was excellent. We had the slippery shrimp (everybody's favorite), the dry sauteed string beans, beef with mushrooms and bamboo shoots, house special chicken and the combination fried rice. The dishes did not arrive all at the same time, but since we were all sharing, this was no problem. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this place.
- Pros: great food
- Cons: eclectic decor
Great dumplings!
by cbulow
We went here on a Saturday night around 8:45pm and were seated without a wait. We ordered the pan fried pork dumplings (Americanized and delicious!), the slippery shrimp (crispy, battered shrimp in a citrus sauce, also amazing!), the House Special Chicken (chicken with wild mushrooms and carrots, this was okay, kind of bland for my taste but the chicken was good quality), and the Chicken Lo Mein (relatively bland and the chicken seemed a little sketchy).
The atmosphere was nice and we were able to eat an appetizer and 2 main dishes for about $40.
It was a little hard to get the waiters attention for more water (bigger water glasses would be great) but other than that the staff seemed very friendly. The food arrived quickly and was hot. Tea was on the table within a minute of arriving.
I will definitely eat here again and I recommend it to any mid-westerners looking for some Chinese food like they have back there.
- Pros: Slipper shrimp, dumplings
- Cons: Parking (you can valet for 75 cents though)
Amazing Chinese Food!
by rae92583
The food here is great, in particular the slippery shrimp! Definitely order family style. The soups for 2 really serve at least 4 and all of the dishes are considerable portions. Service isn't always that great, but the food makes up for it. Making a reservation is recommended as sometimes there's up to an hour wait.
- Pros: Slippery shrimp!
- Cons: Mediocre service
Slippery shrimp is unbelievable! OMG
by chabes
We went on a really busy Saturday evening, and were seated within 10 minutes. While we were waiting to be seated we were told by another client that the slippery shrimp here was amazing and that we should try it. We took the friendly advice and weren't disappointed! Service was fast and good, I really have no complaints about it at all.
This place is great! I would really recommend it to anyone!
- Pros: Everything was fantastic! But try the slippery shrimp.
- Cons: Nothing at all.
Good Food Lousy Service
by gj_bowman
Yang Chow is a source of both good food and frustration. The slippery shrimp- lightly battered shrimp fried perfectly and doused with a delcious citrus, garlic sauce are addictive. The menu is wonderful, as is the execution...as far as food preparation.Over the last decade I have been here countless times. lmost without exception I have received horrible...I mean horrible service.
The last time I took a close friend and his girlfriend there for lunch. Despite repeated requests the waiter did not bring my potstickers (clearly an appetizer) until after we had completed the maain course. The service was so bad and rude that I refused to leave a tip- a first time for me. Since then I still eat the food - but only takeout. You've been warned.
- Pros: slippery shrimp
- Cons: horrible service
