sadly this place is now closed. it has been replaced with something called tenno sushi which in my first dinner there was not nearly the same as hamakawa was on quality and price.

Some of the freshest fish in LA! My friend took my husband and I there and we were blown away by the quality of the fish! We, in turn, took my family there and my cousin from San Francisco (sushi aficionado) could not stop raving about Hamakawa! The slices of fish are huge and so fresh that you would think that they had just sliced it off the fish itself! Their other dishes are good too...especially the Beef Tataki! Plus the place is open late at night.
Pros: Very Fresh Fish
Cons: Parking can be a challenge

this time i came earlier and didnt bother with a reservation or put any trust in it. so now that i've eaten there what do i think? the place was pretty good as i expected, as the sushi was just as good as sushi gens across the street, the other top place in little tokyo. What i ordered otherwise was a bit lacking, but it was more my fault, even the waitress warned me i may not like it, which i appreciated. It was Tuna Sashimi with a sticky potato paste (i did not know it was a paste). I fully intend to go back and try more dishes that may better fit my pallet, but in the meantime, the top qualiy fish and best red snapper (i think its by default japanese snapper there, which is excellent) in town earn my reccomendation.
Pros: Japanese Snapper, Sushi, menu "variety"
Cons: parking, no actual sushi menu?

I was in Little Tokyo with my parents and my friend, and my dad just picked this restaurant simply based on how crowded it looked. We were in for a very pleasant surprise. The service was absolutely impeccable, the food was great, and the prices were reasonable. Made me wish I lived in L.A. We tried their sushi and sashimi as well as lots of small dishes and their udon. On par with some of the best Japanese restaurants (not one of those very expensive ones like Nobu, but mid-price ones) one could find in NY, and offers a greater variety.
Pros: Great service, fresh sushi

Hamakawa is easily the best of at least 20 different sushi restaurants I've eaten at in my lifetime.
Pros: freshness, variety, service
Cons: small

First of all, as a nigiri sushi fanatic, let me just say this: There is no place that can top Hamakawa at the moment, and certainly you won't find a place that serves the FRESHEST FISH and the GIGANTIC size portion that they give you! Now, the honorable mention: The 1st week of May, 2005 (my birthday), my girlfriend had decided that we go to Hamakawa for the 2nd time. When we got there, the tables were full except for the bar and there was another birthday party going on, but we rather wait. Suddenly the crew set up a nice little table on the side of the bar (perfect spot for 2) and everything's just perfect from there on. The sushi was always fresh and good in size quantity and its got this rich silky velvety taste to it. The establishment was squeaky clean and the service and hospitality was excellent as usual. From all the above mentioned, the two times we went there was beyond satifactory.
Pros: good/fresh portions, excellent service, open till 1am
Cons: n/a

Upon entering Hamakawa, the simple decor did not divulge much about what I was about to taste. The cooked cod dish was great and the nigiri was generous. The fish was extremely fresh and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a casual sushi dinner or sushi snack without murdering your wallet.
Pros: Sushi, Inexpensive, Open Late

Hamakawa is probably the best value for sashimi in the city. It may not have the uber-trendy atmosphere of many L.A. sushi restaurants, but the sashimi is delicious, cheap and comes in large portions. Overall good food, good service.
Pros: Great sashimi, cheap, open late

I've been coming to this place for years, and Hamakawa never disappoints! The fish is as fresh as it gets, slices of fish are BIG, quality is tops, and service is great. I'd definitely recommend the soft shell crab roll (aka spider roll), which is a meal in itself. Also, try one of the many grades of toro they have. Location can be a little shady at times, however it's worth it! Plus, they're open late!
Pros: Reasonable, Top Quality, Service
