Rude Service...I will never go!!
by glendalemom
Service is really really no good! I do not feel good to eat there! They discriminate customers!!
Great Price, Great Fish!
by misterirked
Eating at Hama Sushi, I must admit, is not for everyone.
Unlike other sushi restaurants in Little Tokyo, this place stays away from the fancy rolls with extravagant names such as spider, volcano, what-the-f***k, etc. Also, it stays away from fancy interior designs with scantily-dressed Asian watiresses. And instead of offering a million things to go along with your sushi (seriously, what real sushi place in Japan would offer chicken teriyaki with their sushi), Hama Sushi offers a small, but efficient menu with fresh raw fish at a price that is certainly a bargain. A dinner for two with a couple of beers will set you back $70-80, a rare deal in overpriced Little Tokyo. I would definitely recommend the red snapper with salt and the albacore toro. Also tasty is the yellowtail collar. Close your eyes and reopen them and you will swear you are in one of the back alley restaurants of Tsukiji. In a nutshell, if you enjoy real sushi and not just rolls, then this is the place for you.
FABULOUS!
by MarissaS
Hama has the best and the freshest sushi in LA. A small, sushi bar, don't expect to order anything but sushi at a very reasonable price in a very relaxed atmosphere.
- Pros: SPICY TUNY HAND ROLL
Unique & Tantalizing Sushi
by DrKeelyK
I travel the country for business and am weekly sushi eater. I strongly recommend Hama sushi for anyone who appreciates great raw fish. They have amazingly creative rolls (like the Strawberry Roll in Ponzu sauce), and pair customized oils and homeade sauces with fish in a completely unique way. They are masters at making each bite worth savoring.....and everything is FRESH. The bamboo cold sake is a must have accompaniment for your meal. I even overheard the head sushi chef talking about a book he's working on showcasing all of his unique sushi roll creations!!
- Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere, Staff
- Cons: Parking, Hours of Operation, Wait for Table
Raised Prices a lot!
by DangerDLK
I used to like this place because it was really reasonably priced and great sushi for its price. However, I went last night on a Sunday because Daikokuya was closed and ordered a decent amount of sushi only to find they had significantly raised their prices when my bill came. I had no idea they raised the prices since you order directly to the sushi chef and do not get a sushi list. If you are going to dish out this sort of money you are better served going to Sushi Gen or Sushi Go 55.
Rude service with just average sushi
by smileymetoo
We stumbled upon this place on a Sunday evening in search of a sushi restaurant when Komasa next door had a long wait for a table and Sushi Gen was closed. The hostess had a seating system and was quite unfriendly and vocal to my friend when he unknowingly moved to sit on the left side of me at the sushi bar (which is the only seating option available at this place). That was just the start of our disappointing experience. The evening proceeded with the sushi chef giving me attitude because I did not give him all my orders at the same time. When I asked if he wanted us to just mark down what we wanted on a sushi list, he snapped at me and said that I could just tell him what I wanted (which was what I had done intially, but he was annoyed because I had asked for an additional item--I would have thought that restaurants would be happy that their customers want to order more for the benefit of their business). The rest of my experience here was uncomfortable and unpleasant, especially when the sushi chef would glare at me with his evil eye. It was almost as if he was trying to scare away his business. The sushi was nothing spectacular--just average. My friend and I should have gone to another place with the same quality sushi without the attitude and rudeness. I would NOT recommend this "Nozawa-wannabe" sub-par establishment at all!
- Pros: none
- Cons: Rude service
A diamond in the rough!
by marcia_in_la
An intimate, warm, and happy place. (Small and very affordable).
Rice and seaweed perfected! Delicious salmon, spanish mackeral if you can get it, as well as scallops.
Try to get there as soon as they open, it will be far less crowded.
Cheers to you Hama!
- Pros: A small intimate experience.. delicious!!
- Cons: When crowded, you will have to wait your turn.. have patience, it's certainly worth it!!

Hama Sushi has Hamazingly Poor Customer Service
by nsofia
I usually go to Komasa or Izayoi in Little Tokyo, but tonight they were closed so my group of five opted for Hama Sushi, which is in the same vicinity and has comparable prices. We were never given a wait time, but stood in the doorway patiently. One hour went by and in we inquired to find out how much longer for a table. We were told by an aloof waitress that it would be 30 more minutes. It seemed pointless to leave after waiting so long, so we waited another 30 to 45 minutes and saw a table being cleared and assumed it is for us, soon realizing that the waitress had no intention of seating us. After reminding her that we had been waiting an hour and a half, she seated us gruntingly. Once seated, we ordered sushi, drinks and edamame. After 10 min the edamame arrived wet and soggy. By this point we were completely famished and begin eating it only to find it inedible. I explained to the waitress that the edamame was over cooked and ask if they would please make a fresh one. She returned to tell us that the Kitchen staff refused to do so. 20 min pass as my party of five devours the scraps of ginger on the table, completely starving. A round of albacore arrived, which was barely a fraction of what we ordered. Mind you, the surrounding restaurant was moderately busy with a full wait staff. The albacore was decent and we scarfed it down. Another 20 min passed and by this point we were literally yawning and delirious, with the pang of ginger unable to escape our palates. We decide we are fed up and ask our unapologetic waitress for our check. We will never return to Hama sushi because of their horrendous/sloppy service and poor restaurant practices. This is in my top worst restaurant stories of all time, and thats saying a lot after having suffered severe food toxication and eaten expired ham.
YUM!!!!!!

So delicious. My husband and I stumbled in here accidentally, a day after we moved to L.A.! Since then, every single person we have brought here, natives and visitors alike, will never go to another sushi place in L.A. It's tiny, but soooooo worth it. Don't order all your sushi at once, like many first timers do, just order one or two things at a time. BEST spicy tuna handrolls EVER. I'm serious. I don't normally get spicy tuna... but GET IT... you will NOT be disappointed! The rest of their sushi is amazing too... It would be really difficult for someone to convince me to go elsewhere for sushi. YUM!!
- Pros: SUSHI!!
- Cons: not much... they don't serve other Japanese food besides sushi, so don't ask, but who needs it anyway??
