My boyfriend and I went late on a Sunday night (right after 10pm) and decided to try it out since our usual sushi spots in Little Tokyo were already closed. We were happy to see Oomasa open, and walked in to see only another group of 3 waiting in line. After a few minutes of waiting they tried to take a seat at the sushi bar but was redirected to one ot the tables. At this point there were still at least 3 seats open at the bar. We waited expecting a host or a waiter or SOMEBODY to acknowledge us and at least ask us if we wanted the seat at the sushi bar, or to tell us to wait. But nothing. We waited a good 10-15 minutes while every single person that worked there completely ignored us. Another couple came after us but left when they realize nothing was happening. At last we asked a waiter if we could sit at the bar, and even then he was extremely rude and seemed annoyed that we talked to him. We sat down for 2 seconds, and decided that they didn't deserve our business. They lost business from at least 4 people within 15 minutes because of their terrible service, and I am definitely never going back there again.

This place is amazing, the atmosphere is like in a sushi bar in Tokyo or Osaka. The food is outstanding, everytime i go there i love to start with the salmon/avocado temaki. Probably the menu is simple but the quality of the food cannot be compared to any other place in town. One of the best japanese restaurants I've ever been outside Japan.

Pros: everything

Cons: there's always a line at the door, but it's worth to wait

I've had unswerving loyalty to Oomasa for the four years I've lived in Los Angeles. While I've eaten at a variety of Japanese restaurants across the greater LA-area, I still return to this restaurant because of his cozy atmosphere and its well-priced bento bunch lunches and dinners. There's a little bit of everything on the menu including vegetable and shrimp tempura, beef, chicken, and salmon teriyaki, udon noodles, and of course, sushi. The best value is the bento box as it offers a little bit of everything, I usually get the #1 which has chicken teriyaki, macaroni salad, green salad, tempura, and pickled vegetables. It also comes with miso soup and green tea ice cream for dessert. While Oomasa can get crowded on the weekend, service is still prompt and you can also opt for seating at the sushi bar. Open late and conveniently located in the Little Tokyo Plaza where you can also visit a Japanese grocery store, bakery, and sweet shop.

Pros: Great Ambience, Quick Service, Good Value

Have gone here for 3 years, and the quality is still solid. They have sushi, great noodle soups in miso broth and a wider selection of japanese cuisine. The thing that keeps me coming back is that it's open late and the interior. The sushi bar is one of the prettiest in LA, with its wood carvings surrounding it, and the red comfy booths are good for small groups. During dinner rush this place can have a line, but it's almost always worth the wait. The prices are decent (though they might have gone up in the past three years), the service is quick and the atmosphere is cozy.

Pros: Miso Soup, Atmosphere, Food

Cons: Bums around Little Tokyo bugging you for money

OOMASA's got a great location and feel for a sushi restaurant, but lacking many qualities. First of all the semi empty oversized bar took up valuable spaces and limit the amount of tables available, especially needed for groups. The food was the biggest turn off, the cut rolls were like a size of a nickel coin in diameter. However, the spicy tuna (cut) rolls were a bit larger, but they killed it with a lettuce leaf wrapped in the middle, this "creative rolls" bandwagon took away the authenticity of a traditional sushi restaurant, otherwise taste is like any other and wasn't bad. The service was prompt but inconsistent, leaving my glass of water and tea low for the most part. I'm not a fan of creative sushis and mini cut rolls especially when I get my monies worth at usual visits elsewhere.

Oomasa has got to be the best Japanese Restaurant in town, and this is coming from an extreme Sushi lover. I've been to a lot of overpriced Japanese Restaurants, with undoubtly good ambience, but I've never tasted food as good as it is in Oomasa. The prices are fairly low, for such superbly fresh sushis made by friendly elderly Japanese men. They also have a large variety of Japanese beer, Sake and hot food (Teriyaki, Tempura etc), and I highly recommend the Dynamite and the Unagi set. Parking is easy, and service is great, except for certain days when it gets real crowded. They're closed on Tuesdays and at 1am on other days. End your dinner with the delicious Green Tea ice-cream and you're good to go!

Oomasa doesn't impress with fancy rolls or nouveau appetizers. They do it with great cuts of sashimi, tasty traditional nigiri, and outstanding prices. Go there if you are a true sushi-lover. Go to Zip-Fusion on Traction Ave. if you want funky rolls.

Very good sushi at a decent price. Definitely a great spot for a casual dinner when you're in the mood for sushi.
