THE WHITE CASTLE OF PASTRAMI
by wise1too at Citysearch
This place is to pastrami what White castle is to burgers. Not quite the real thing but tastes great!
For true pastrami go to Langers. But this is tasty and relatively cheap. ($6.79 a sandwhich)
I'll be back!
San Gabriel Valley's "world famous" pastrami dip tradition for more than 40 years.

In Short
A combination stand-up or sit-down restaurant, this SoCal institution packs orders in paper bags--no matter whether diners are eating in or taking the food to go. Famous for its signature peppery, pink pastrami dip; the thinly shaved meat is griddle-fried and strewn across French rolls, accompanied by dill pickles and mustard. Burgers are served in generous portions and dressed with Thousand Island dressing. A large side order of fries should easily feed a group of four.
Don't forget the Burgers!

Obviously The Hat is renowned for its pastrami. However, do not forget their burgers! We tried them on a whim one day and WOW, they are DELICIOUS! Just great! Yummy beef and fresh cristp lettuce, tomato, onion (all made to order, of course) We are fans of Pie n Burger and Continental Burger and the Hat burgers are easliy just as good. And CHEAP. The pastrami is $6.49, the single burger is $2.49. (you can also get a double burger- enormous). Try the onion rings too- so good!
- Pros: Value, taste, parking, friendly service
- Cons: Calories
Great Sandwiches - Huge Portions
by jayjerome at Citysearch
High-end fast food, in a cheerful setting. And yeah, the Pastrami sandwiches are delicious, but so are the Chili Dogs, and the Roast Beef too...
And if you order the Wet Fries, you better have some people with you to help finish eating the order -- they give you enough to feed four people (and that's no exaggeration).
.
- Pros: Good food, great portions, fair prices
- Cons: You always eat too much, and need a nap afterwards!
Great pastrami
by tqt08 at Citysearch
I'm not a big pastrami fan so when I first walkted into this restaurant, I wasn't expecting anything great. I tried the Pastrami dip and ever since then, I've been a fan. Absolutely great pastrami. Love how they dip the bread like a french dip sandwich before wrapping it up. Great portions of pastrami. 6.49 for a pastrami dip but the heaping amounts of fries are only $2-3.50 and it's good for about 3 people. Chili fries are pretty tasty as well. Great amounts of food. Gotta get the pastrami!!!
- Pros: Portions
- Cons: Pastrami was a bit pricey
Brown bags of goodness
by tyneshad at Citysearch
Whether I'm sitting in or taking my order to-go, the brown sack served at The Hat can always brighten my day. The pastrami is superb. The chilli cheese fries are to die for. The turkey sandwiches are even noteworthy. All in all, this is a great lunch spot nestled in an almost forgotten section of Pasadena.
- Pros: Great food, quick service
- Cons: Tough parking at times
Best Pastrami anywhere
by socialbutterfly118 at Citysearch
Everytime I visit California I must make atleast not one but two stops at The Hat because the Pastrami Dip is so good that I am not able to eat pastrami from anywhere else!
- Pros: simply the best pastrami
- Cons: none
best onion rings
by vmt at Citysearch
onion rings made properly and you get a liquor store paper bag full of them. can't here here too often or you get burned out and become sickened by the thought of eating their food. pastrami is wack; cheap greasy meat which is soaked up by the cheap bread and disentigrates. if you like their pastrami, you're never had real pastrami. go find an italian deli, i'd much rather go through the trouble of making my own than eat this greasy insult. can't comment on much else, just aviod the pastrami.
- Pros: onion rings, price to portion ratio
- Cons: pastrami
Best partrami and chili fries around!
by shoegal84 at Citysearch
I have been eating here since I was a kid. Always the same order too, a pastrami and chili cheese fries. I think I have eaten at just about every single The Hat there is in So. Cal! When the Glendora one opened and I went the people even recognized me from the Pasadena shop! Embarassing!
I don't know about the rest of the items, but I do know that the portions are GI-NORMOUS! SO be warned!
- Pros: Pastrami, chili cheese fries, orange whip!
- Cons: sometimes there is a crowd
Hugest portions I have ever seen!!!
by zelda2222 at Citysearch
We are from out of town and had never been there before so we made the mistake of ordering way too much. I ordered the roast beef and chilli cheese fries and my husband ordered the pastrami, onion rings and potato salad. Well from this place you could stuff at least four people with just those items. I did not care for the roast beef but the pastrami was really good. The fries and onion rings come in portions so large you would think they messed up your order and gave you triple what you asked. We were truly stunned by how much food we had. The prices are amazing for how much you get. I thought the chilli was a bit bland and could've used salt but by the time I ate some I was so stuffed I just didn't bother. We would definatley go back again.
- Pros: price, quantity, free drink refills
- Cons: roast beef
