Shoddy service and double standards?
by Aracx
The food is better than average but the service we received was shoddy. We went in dressed casual on a Sunday afternoon. Street casual definitely not Sunday best nor Mexico City pretension. The waitress told us to sit anywhere so we walked up the short stairway to the level that separates the restaurant and sat ourselves at an empty table. The manager or someone with apparent authority appeared out of nowhere and told us rudely and loudly that the area was closed although there were other patrons at tables. No explanation. No apology. No courtesy. My impression is that they are selective about who they will treat graciously, probably just their local regulars.
- Pros: food is better than average and sometimes excellant
- Cons: shoddy service
HORRIBLE SERVICE
by Luciyoda
Food is really good, and many times have put up with the pathetic service to eat there. This time I will have to say I was perplexed at the attitude of the owner and his behavior! Actually was on the verge of being abusive and I will never set foot in the restaurant again!
- Pros: Good Food
- Cons: Terrible Service not worth the good food!
Great food for the money
by Nozferat
The food is great. Their lunch specials are a good deal...the mole sauce is wonderful.
This place is a great alternative to the La Caserio in Silverlake...if you want service that is.
And the food frankly is better here even though it costs less.
- Pros: Food
- Cons: Service OK...place can be nicer
Bad Omelet
by Orpheeb
It is too bad they wanted to add new items to their menu along with raising the price on most of their food. Well, if you want to have a good breakfast (omelet) La Cabanita is not the best place to go. their breakfast menu its mostly vegetarian and the Omelet i had today Oct 26 2008 10:30 am, was a total disappointment. it was so thin that the first thing it comes to your mind its ( i wanted more :() well, i do not want to exagerate but they used one egg to make it, and the inside had about 4 litle strips of poblano peper, and just a few potatoes. even if i have had it with cheese and our cream, it would have been not better. another thing is that it was overpriced for being a new item on their menu. So if you want an omelet, Ihop, Shakers, the coffee table and many other restaurants other than La cabanita, are the best places to go to .
Go for the sauces...

My first time at La Cabanita the other night. A friend from out of town and I went on the recommendation of many! Firstly yes, the salsas and chips are absolutely wonderful especially the red one, so smoky, complex and just the right level of heat. The Tamarindo and Jamaica drinks were both overly sweet. The green mole sauce over chunks of tender pork was pretty good but the little stuffed chiles that sounded so great on the menu were really disappointing, the seasoning totally out of balance, There was so much cinnamon in the mixture that it ended up tasting rather like Dentyne gum or christmas pudding... not sure whether to try this place again.
- Pros: Salsa and chips
Best Mexican Ever
by ezcp103
My wife and I have visited La Cabanita twice now. The food is awesome. They have their own sauces that taste like nothing I have ever tried before. Other than the usual wait on a Friday night which is to be expected of a popular place La Cabanita is the best Mexican Food we've had in LA so far.
- Pros: The Food
- Cons: None so Far
Some of the best Mexican in the city!!!!
by jmiertschin
Being from Texas and being raised on Mexican food I'm often disappointed at what Los Angeles has to offer, but La Cabanita is one of the exceptions. It's amazing. My favortie thing to do is get a couple of things ala carte, like a couple of tacos (chicken, carne asada, carnitas, or al pastor, they're all very good) and maybe an enchilada. The mole sauce is great and they have a really interesting assortment of chile rellenos stuffed with fruit and meat and cheese. Also great deals on margaritas here. Oh, and if you like the show My Name is Earl, I've seen Jason Lee eating here a few times, I think its his favorite place too. If your not in teh neighborhood, its worth the drive, go check it out.
- Pros: Great tacos, great mole, great margaritas, great prices
- Cons: I can't think of any
Finest Mexican cuisine on the planet!
by azurebird
This is simply, the finest Mexican restaurant I have ever visited. I ate there three times this week! Some of the offerings are very foreign to the western palette, like the Chile Nogado, where a poblano is filled with fruit and nuts in a light filling. The Chuletas, pork chops cooked in a pasilla sauce with sour cream, is sublime. as is the flan and the tortillas, which are made to order. My last meal included sopes compesta and a pork rind taco. I have always found the service fantastic. Great coffee in the morning as well, with a nice mexican pastry.
Best Mexican Food ... End of Story.

Hands down the best Mexican food I've ever tasted. We drive from Woodland Hills once every month or so and every time we return from a trip and are at the Burbank airport (halfway there). :-)
We love the fresh warm chips, the incredible salsas (especially the green/verde)...YUMMM
When you love a dish like we do, we stick to the same thing every time. The steak nachos with the avocado and jalapenos are to die for and the steak tacos noratenos (sp?) are heaven on earth.
We've never had a problem with the service and the delicious food is always worth the drive.
- Pros: Delicious food and tasty margaritas!
- Cons: Need a location in the San Fernando Valley!! LOL
Couild be great, but NOT quite

My wife and I have toured many of the best Mexican restaurants here in Southern California, the capitol of great mexican food outside of Mexico. Everytime a list of 10 best mexican restaurants comes out we visit each and make our decisions. La Cabanita was one of those restaurants. With high hopes we entered the cramped but quaint front area. There is a much larger dining area in back but we've never been seated back there. The good news was that the food tasted great!! The bad news is that the service was atrocious and impersonal. It took quite a long time to get asked for drinks. A while longer for our food order. When our order came to us both my wifes and mine was flawed. I asked for no cheese (lactose intolerant) and my wife asked for chicken not beef tacos and enchilada. When the correct order did arrive we loved it. Our recomendation is that they should give the chef a raise and give the wait staff and/or manager the boot.
- Pros: Food, everything is good. Try the Chicjken soup a tasty meal
- Cons: Horrible service. Prepare yourself emotionally for indifference
