Best BBQ in Los Angeles
by bartink at Citysearch
Let me start by saying that I was born and raised in Texas. While this BBQ is mediocre for Texas, it is the best I have had in Los Angeles. Don't listen to those saying that the brisket was dry. The brisket, ribs, and chicken were juicy and tender. The sausage was a glaring weakness and would not have sold in Texas. The sauce is very sweet and does not contain as much vinegar as what I am used to. The sides are definitely weak, except the cole slaw, which reminded me of home. The wait staff was nice and I'm sure that none was a starving actor, which I found quite refreshing.
Is it as good as what you find in small towns across Texas? No. Is it the best in Los Angeles? Definitely. It is good enough to give me my BBQ fix and that is the most I can ask given the alternative of going home to get decent BBQ.
Best BBQ in the Valley
by jeffusc1 at Citysearch
I have tried nearly every BBQ place in the valley and Dr. Hogly Wogly's is about the best. The food never disappoints. I always get the brisket which is tender and juicy, but has also heard that the hot links, the ham and the pork are also excellent. The BBQ beans are outstanding and some of the most interesting I have ever tasted. They're just like candy. All of the other sides are quite good as well. The service is prompt and friendly. The same group of waitresses has been there forever, and they know the menu inside and out. They make you feel right at home. The restaurant itself has no ambiance or charm whatsoever, but it is clean and well maintained.
- Pros: Great food, good service, fair prices
- Cons: Very limited parking, no ambiance
Best bbq in town, great service.

Best bar-b-que in town, sauce is delicious and the meat and nice and juicy. For a first time customer, I recommend getting the 3 way combo, you can get beef brisket, sausage link, and pork ribs. The beef brisket is to die for. Entrees come with bread and sides. DO NOT ORDER any salad from here, they don't serve it and save yourself the humiliation of being laughed at for ordering salad in a bbq place. Service is great, all the waitresses are very helpful and friendly. Price is reasonable.
- Pros: Great bbq, great service
- Cons: a little too cozy
Best Ribs in California
by japeterson007 at Citysearch
That is all I can say, this place has the Best Ribs in California. Stop reading and just go eat there. The drive to the valley is worth it, even in Summer.
- Pros: Ribs
- Cons: nothing else matters
Just like Texas!
by toni0toni0 at Citysearch
My husband and I "commute" to Texas for work every so often, and we've tried some GOOOOD BBQ. I'd venture to say that Dr Hogley's is on par with some of the best we've had down there. It has a real down home feel too!
- Pros: YUMMMM
- Cons: sorta far from where we live, but worth the drive!
very good beef, ribs etc. Get their sauce b4 you leave.

I got their beef biscuit and my friend go their ribs.
The nice thing about this place is its not a upscale claim jumper type restaurant. Hoggly Woggley is much more authentic then that. The reason being is that they are old school, they follow traditions and they have time tested recipes that modern places don't have.
- Pros: Good food great service very good
- Cons: none
very good

Just like the reviews for many other ethnic, or regional, restaurants -- the scores are very low from the transplants. I have no respect for any transplant who chooses to live in Los Angeles, yet complain about our food. There is no city in the country that can match the quality of so many specialty foods than Los Angeles. New York may be close.
That is why so many of these reviews should be ignored. I have live in Texas and this place can compete with their BBQ. Also, their is great atmosphere to the shack of a restaurant.
For the people who do not like this place, go back to Tony Roma's where you belong. That way, I will not have to wait so long for a table.
- Pros: great BBQ
- Cons: the long drive from the SGV
Visit the motherland and get a re-fresher course on Texas BBQ

It would have been wonderful to find a lil place of heaven to remind you of home out here in La La Land - but this is not the place. Perhaps this establishment was started to give the locals here an idea of bbq'd meat just as famous as St. Louis and Memphis? Whatever the reason the owner or whomever is the "Texan" associated with this establishment - he/she/it might want to take a long visit back home and practice! I have never had brisket so tough; by the time you try the 3rd or 4th slice it starts to get more tender, but not by much. I was also surprised how far one can take sugar - apparently it's used here quite a bit mask the lack of taste in everything from the cole slaw to their sauce. Our waitress assured us that the only item not made in-house was the potato salad - well, I don't know where they make that purchase, but that was the only item worth eating! Perhaps that outside source could provide a decent menu @ $20 a plate while the "Texan" is getting some schooling back home!
- Pros: Dive ambience
- Cons: Food, disappearing waitresses once you are served, price
Dr. Wogly: Quack

I can't believe I drove for even fifteen minutes to try this place. The place has table service, and the lifers there are courteous enough, but just. Seat yourself whereever, I guess. Most menu items are over fifteen dollars, with a handful of sandwiches for $7 and change. The texas hot link sandwich was lacking in heat of both the temperature and spice varieties, though, ironically, it did give me indigestion. The spicy barbecue sauce and wet naps likewise failed to live up to their names, being sweet and dry, respectively. I think the waitress forgot momentarially about the fries, judging from the flicker of surprise on her face when I asked about them after she said "have a nice meal," so she didn't drop by again until it looked like we were finished. Mention cold food, and she'll just give you more of it to make up for the dissapointment. Quantity trumps quality here, and only barely. And oh yeah, the booths are so narrow that footsie is inevitable, and don't try to balance yorself with a hand on the table when you squeeze in; the tables aren't bolted down. Almost launched a saltshaker across the room with that one.
- Pros: Sharp toothpicks, dry napkins, cold water.
- Cons: everything else
Van Nuys cheap-eats landmark dishes out "Flintstones"-sized slabs of sweet, saucy meat.

In Short
Faux wood paneling, dime-store oil paintings and silk plants make this tiny eatery feel like a rec room. A veteran kitchen staff piles platters high with massive portions of brisket, hot links, smoked chicken and secret-marinade beef ribs. Meals come with two sides--tangy baked beans and macaroni salad with chopped celery are favorites. A small selection of classic Southern desserts includes sweet-potato pie and pecan pie a la mode.
