Best BBQ

by time4lisa at Citysearch

Ok who cares about atmosphere when it comes to getting messy with bbq. They have the best beef brisket and the portion for the price is crazy. Everything else is good but the brisket is to die for. Service is so so but with food that good who cares. Hole in the wall atmosphere but the food is soooo good who cares. Once you go you'll be hooked.

  • Pros: Best Beef Brisket
  • Cons: It's in Van Nuys too far

Great BBQ, Great Service

by uclagirl at Citysearch

I'm from Texas, and I'm very picky about BBQ. In fact, I usually say that I don't really care for it, because so much of what is passed off as bar-be-que is at best mediocre. However, Dr. shines. It's not big, they don't take reservations, and they won't seat you until the entire party is there. However, we showed up with a party of 13, and were happy with our seating. Although everything is booths and banquettes, they worked to get us as close together as possible, and we still felt like a unified group.

The food? Delicious. Tender, flavorful meat (I had the 3-item combo of brisket, ham, and spare ribs) with your choice of mild or hot sauce on the side. Both are terrific. The baked beans are excellent as well.

The service was attentive and friendly, and they did a great job with our large group.

The prices are totally reasonable for what you get. (Brisket is cheap if you buy it at the supermarket, but so is everything else.) They are not out of line with other BBQ places I've eaten, including Texas. And I wound up with at least three meals worth of food on my plate, so on a per-meal basis it's quite a bargain.

We'll definitely be back.

  • Pros: Excellent BBQ
  • Cons: No reservations

Best BBQ I've had in Los Angeles

by vintielo at Citysearch

This is best BBQ joint I've been to in Los Angeles. They have huge portions, the ribs melt off the bone and the brisket is mouth watering good.

Extremely Overrarted

by fastlane444 at Citysearch

I'm native Texan and KNOW barbeque. Walked out of here 6 years ago when saw that brisket was $9/ HALF pound. Brisket is an inexpensive meat. 6 years later $13.95 half pound. Love brisket but you could do much better for $28/pound. Brisket was specialty, tried it, with links and pork ribs. Links OK but brisket tough, chewy - not tender like supposed to be. Even worse, asked for sauce on the side but whole platter came swimming in thin sugary mess. Waitress said wasn't sauce but marinade. Made sure they drained for doggie bag - the brown sugary marinade, ruined everything.Portions large but $20.95 for a 3 meat platter should be. Confirmed my initial instinct of WHY I order sauce on side and why I thought it was WAY too expensive for BBQ 6 years ago. I know this is LA but BBQ is supposed to be cheap eats.

  • Pros: Beans, Sauce, Bread
  • Cons: BAD runny marinade, Price, Brisket

Disappointed

by AnonAF at Citysearch

Lunched here with boyfriend Saturday, March 11. Used Zagat guide to find it. The bbq was good, not great. Enjoyed the hot links and brisket, but spareribs were just ok. His chicken was great. Our waitress was lovely (kind, professional, accommodating), but our server was very rude - a rough looking woman with a perpetual smirk and attitude bordering on disrespect. The food wasn't good enough to put up with that. We did not enjoy the sides. We like traditional pork beans and cole slaw. There was something tangy in the beans, maybe cumin? And raisins in the coleslaw with that same tangy taste. I guess we have high standards in bbq and service so agreed not to go back.

  • Pros: Decent bbq
  • Cons: rude server, bathrooms outside

As Good As any BBQ anywhere

by rooster23 at Citysearch

BBQ is not Grilled meat, BBQ is completely different and THIS is some of the best BBQ anywhere. I have tried all the items on the menu, Brisket and Hot Links are my favorite. This is a simple formula, IF you are looking for fancy, then it ain't BBQ. You could move this place to west Texas on a roadside 200 miles from anywhere and it would be crowded because it is that good. The atmosphere is Texas Roadside. We drive 185 miles to have dinner here at least every 6-8 weeks. If you like Denny's and Perko's $7.99 steak you will not like this place. Hogley's is #1. Waitress' are great. Price is right. Yumm.

  • Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere
  • Cons: None

Don't wear a nice shirt

by kikaida at Citysearch

This place has the best ribs ever. Very much not your "typical" style of rib, very unique style and just killer. Huge portions are the norm, even the chicken pieces are massive.

Kind of dumpy on the inside but no matter, the food by far makes up for it.

The waitresses are rather rough around the edges. Your typical gruff, burley truck stop "Marge" types. Who cares though, the food is that good.

The only draw back is you gotta go outside around back to wash up and make sure you ask for a coin before you go.

Don't forget the floss and parking can be a pain, but the 20+ mile drive I make every now and then is well worth it.

  • Pros: Huge Portions, Killer Food
  • Cons: Dumpy interior, Bathroom location, Butch waiteresses

BRISKET!!!

by d_fens at Citysearch

Oh, I love their brisket. And the hot links. Good ribs as well, but the brisket. It's worth the trip. But loose the tragic plastic bags when boxing the food - it's just too much trailer park for me...

  • Pros: brisket, brisket, hot links
  • Cons: plastic bags
