Grave disappointment
by FatFoodie at Citysearch
The ribs were so tough they were almost impossible to chew.
Sauce was good, sweet and spicy, sides adequate.
Brisket was awsome!! Made my day.
- Pros: Service is outstanding!
- Cons: Sub par for "Texas Style" BBQ
Most over-rated BBQ in LA... ...by far.

I'm a huge fan of BBQ... Western, Eastern, Texas, you name it. "Barbecue" is both a noun and a verb. This place has placards/article posted proclaiming it one of best in the area (and the U.S.). Things mustve gone downhill a lot since then. It's outrageously expensive (even for LA norms); justified neither by portion nor quality. Service is quick, seating non-existent, lighting is 60-watt naked bulb." I sampled everything on the menu over 12 visits trying hard to find their strong point. Everything (except the beef ribs) was very dry and tougher than youd ever expect from the best. Their sauce (the hallmark of any good barbecue, Texas or otherwise) ranks somewhere below Heinz family-size: so sweet you cant taste anything. The $14.95 pre-cooked ribs you find shrink-wrapped in the supermarket are better. Too bad, theres not much BBQ to be found in LA, and I had high hopes.
- Pros: service
- Cons: food quality, price price price, ambiance
Good food, Very high prices

I tried the Doc for the first time last night. We got the a pork and beef rib combo. It was about $20. While the portions were huge, I don't believe it's a good valve. Very overpriced.
I thought the pork ribs were about average. Nothing great.
The bbq sauce was terrible. Too sweet.
But I loved beef ribs. Very good smoke flavor and the ribs had so much meat on them.
I may go back to try the brisket.
- Pros: Beef ribs, large portions
- Cons: , bad bbq sauce
Disappointing

After hearing a friend and later a celebrity go on and on about this place, I figured what the hell? What IN the hell, was more like it. The meat was dry, chewy and stringy, and the baked beans looked condemnable. After paying the bill, I felt even more ripped off. Maybe it's an L.A. thing akin to embracing a place as cool b/c it doesn't have a sign or is in a shady part of town. I dunno. But I'm from the South, and I think I can say with some credibility that there has GOT to be better BBQ in L.A.!
- Pros: um, they have beer?, waitresses are nice
- Cons: dry meat, hot sauce not HOT, overpriced
Not what I thought

After hearing so much about it, we decided to try it one night. Not what we had expected. Not so good and I did not feel the prices were worth what you got.
BIG DISAPOINTMENT
Vastly overrated

I can not believe that this place constantly makes so many "Best of LA" lists. The meat is tough and stringy; average, at best. There is a new place in the west valley called Big Als on Ventura, just east of Topanga that is vastly superior, and cheaper too! I also think the Bear Pit, which is close to Dr.Hogly's is much better, as is Ribs USA in Burbank.
ahhh

I've been there, too expensive for what they serve and not that great.
- Cons: food, service, price
I beg to differ.........

Even though the sliced beef was tender...the taste was not as good as the ratings made it seem. I was not impressed and I was thinking about going to Lucille's Smokehouse next time. It was a drive to get there ...over 30 miles. Everyone has their own taste but this place was not for me and my friends. I will not be going back but they will certainly keep their local customers.
