Pretty good BBQ

by Sheauen at Citysearch

My bf has been trying to get me to agree with Hogly Woglys for a while. We were running errands out in the SFV and he drove us out of the way to eat here. its saying a lot if he's driving out of the way to get some grub.

I think i have pretty exacting standards for BBQ (despite being asian). My best friends dad BBQ's every three day holiday and Uncle Stevies BBQ is hands down the best.

Hogly Woglys is a good stop gap when a 3day weekend isn't in sight. The portions are huge. We ate until we were stuffed and still had to take home the leftovers (which they pack up for you in a plastic bag)

I can't say the sides wowed me, they were kinda unmemorable, but the BBQ was good. Love their sauce.

This is not a date place. This is a get your hands dirty, bbq sauce on your face, elbows out, lick your fingers kinda place.

Kudos to my bf for knowing good bbq. 1 minus point for considering it a date place.

  • Pros: Huge Portions, good sauce.
  • Cons: Not a Date Place

Best Kept Secret

by jazzyjeff41 at Citysearch

Has great BBQ food, its a homestyle restaurant with a small outdoor patio, you get large generous portions, very limited parking and limited seating inside. Its like a truck stop you might find out in the middle of nowhere. word of mouth has made this a very popular place. I enjoyed the food very much. The bbq beans are different than most places. The have a great BBQ sauce.

  • Pros: Best bbq food,
  • Cons: If you are looking for atmosphere, this is not it

Best BBQ in Los Angeles

by bartink at Citysearch

Let me start by saying that I was born and raised in Texas. While this BBQ is mediocre for Texas, it is the best I have had in Los Angeles. Don't listen to those saying that the brisket was dry. The brisket, ribs, and chicken were juicy and tender. The sausage was a glaring weakness and would not have sold in Texas. The sauce is very sweet and does not contain as much vinegar as what I am used to. The sides are definitely weak, except the cole slaw, which reminded me of home. The wait staff was nice and I'm sure that none was a starving actor, which I found quite refreshing.

Is it as good as what you find in small towns across Texas? No. Is it the best in Los Angeles? Definitely. It is good enough to give me my BBQ fix and that is the most I can ask given the alternative of going home to get decent BBQ.

very good

by beowells at Citysearch

Just like the reviews for many other ethnic, or regional, restaurants -- the scores are very low from the transplants. I have no respect for any transplant who chooses to live in Los Angeles, yet complain about our food. There is no city in the country that can match the quality of so many specialty foods than Los Angeles. New York may be close.

That is why so many of these reviews should be ignored. I have live in Texas and this place can compete with their BBQ. Also, their is great atmosphere to the shack of a restaurant.

For the people who do not like this place, go back to Tony Roma's where you belong. That way, I will not have to wait so long for a table.

  • Pros: great BBQ
  • Cons: the long drive from the SGV

BRISKET!!!

by d_fens at Citysearch

Oh, I love their brisket. And the hot links. Good ribs as well, but the brisket. It's worth the trip. But loose the tragic plastic bags when boxing the food - it's just too much trailer park for me...

  • Pros: brisket, brisket, hot links
  • Cons: plastic bags

past experience

by min shimoyama at Citysearch

I vowed to never go back since I had a extremely

rude waitress a few years ago. We were passing by

and decided to have some ribs on the spur of the

moment and happened to take a can of coke in with

us. The waitress got extremely obnoxious and embarassed us in front of other customers about the coke. We got up and walked out! However,

after many years, I took some out of town guest there since I knew there food was decent and found

the waitress that served us was very delightful and

helpful!!

  • Pros: food good, waitress we had was , very good
  • Cons: , portions we got were , somewhat small

Hogly Yum-o-gly!

by cp_n_ar_on_the_town at Citysearch

Yum Yum Yum! BYOW - Bring Your Own Washcloth! So its not all about location, although the real estate under the Spearmint Rhino billboard is choice! The food is as good as it gets in the mecca of California Cuisine and valet parking for pick up orders. Beef ribs are muy meaty! Bring your tums! The each plate comes with two sauces, spicy and other. Both are equally good! B/c of the messiness involved i do not suggest bringing your first date here! But it would be a mighty fine second!

  • Pros: big servings, good for kids, reasonalbly priced
  • Cons: parking, small venue

25 years with the Dr.

by wildozer at Citysearch

Great food and BBQ sauce for centuries. The ambience of a truckstop but then I go there to eat the brisket, hot links, and macaroni salad. THe Doctor may be long gone but the memory lingers on and on.

use to be good

by zillagirl at Citysearch

I started going here 15 years ago. It was wonderful. For the last couple of years you have to be careful. If you go in the afternoon or early evening many times the food taste like you are getting food that was cooked yesterday and re heated today-Dry and Hard. Their sause has a great taste - whice makes it stand out-but it is to exspensive to be served yesterdays food.
