They know hair
by shawn puckett at Citysearch
So I was looking to change barber shops for sometime. I did my online research and found Rudy's close to my home which I liked. But when I started reading reviews from other sites they were mostly negative. I thought how bad could it be. One reviewer talked about get charge for a shampoo with his hair cut. It must have been the first time he had received a hair cut in public. Yes they did offer the shampoo, but I turned it down cause my hair was fresh and clean already. I took pictures and talked to the stylist. I have had two different people cut my hair there. They both did a good job and made suggestions and the end result I was happy with. The barber shop can always be a little nerve wrecking, Rudy's is no different. Great location and trained stylist. Shouldn't expect more.
- Pros: great place. Nice staff
- Cons: push the add on sales.
Depends on stylist not Rudy's! Tipton is the Man!
by Yeahman at Citysearch
I have been going to Rudy's Silverlake for 2 years now and have had many stylist do my hair. Some are good and some are alright. Two months ago I started going to Tipton, He is awesome! the best haircut I have ever had! He has over 20 years experience and it shows. So you see , it is not about Rudy's, it is about the person you go to. Rudy's,, you are lucky to have such a great stylist doing Great haircuts for such a cheap price, people take advantage and get a great haircut from a great artist.
RIP OFF!
by goodfella80 at Citysearch
I didn't have a hair over 3 inches on my head and somehow I walked out $32 in the hole after tip. I don't care how nice you are, but don't toss me in a chair and start shampooing because "I had product in my hair." Just buzz and trim and be done with it. I was on my way to the gym for crying out loud. I assumed the cut would cost $15, instead it was double. My drunken uncle could cut my hair just as well.... I'm an athlete, not a movie star. Treat me like one.
- Pros: the people were nice, but I could honestly care less
- Cons: cost, efficiency, SCAM!
Guys stay away!

Unless you really want a hipster, uneven, pomo thing with your hair. These people honestly don't have solid hair cutting skills and it seems to be more about the interior design and "cool vibe" of the place. Also they have no personality whatsoever and seem kind of angry all the time. I guess that's part of the whole hipster package, but they put that stuff ahead of doing a good job. Avoid.
Schlock Cuts

As a first timer (and last) at Rudy's I should have known immediately by looking at my disinterested stylist that I was in big trouble. She was as imaginative as a clipper wielding barber at Camp Pendelton and was clearly not keen on understanding what I wanted. At first glance Rudy's is a fun, place. I was very happy that I wasn't charged--which may speak to the kindness of management--but I caught a negative vibe from it's arrogant staff. Go to Shorty's instead on Fairfax.
- Pros: Ambience
- Cons: Staff
Big ego, little experience
by rudeboym19 at Citysearch
I am a male and I figure I have gotten about 10 haircuts here over a period of 2 years. ONE of them was one of the best I've ever gotten but that was with me talking the poor girl through every step of the cut. I would say THREE of the cuts were just okay. That leaves me with SIX bad haircuts - everything from being uneven to whitewalled ears to something reminiscent of a mullet, you name it. ONCE I even had to get my money back because the haircut was so bad. So if you want a hipster, spiky, streaky, faux-hawk rat-tail then go to Rudy's. If you want to look good, stay away. These kids are hired for their hipster look, but they seriously lack experience.
- Pros: They're good with edgy looks, spiky styles, buzz cuts, faux-hawks, choppy hipster mullet looks
- Cons: Stylists lack experience, too much texturizing (aka. butchering), don't do well with normal men's styles.
Silver Lake - yes. Santa Monica - no.
by bsc9q at Citysearch
Rudy's Santa Monica was a major disappointment after an excellent haircut at the Silver Lake location. I was forced to explain the desired haircut four times before it was even marginally understood, and the resulting haircut was uneven and not well blended b/w the longer top length and the shorter side/back length. Additionally (unlike at Silver Lake), despite being a buzz cut, I was charged $24 rather than $15 because the cut "was two different lengths." Rudy, please ensure consistent quality in your locations and among your employees.
- Pros: none
- Cons: lack of haircutting skill & grasp of haircut descriptions
good coloring, cuts, and personalites....
by 1433 at Citysearch
I've been here to get highlights and cut, about four times now. Every time I had a different stylist and every time I left very pleased.
The staff is friendly, some are hard on the edges but very good people, great personalities. I dress and look nothing like the staff and always feel very welcome.
- Pros: walk in
- Cons: long wait
Rudy's Santa Monica
by peachplumpear at Citysearch
I just got my hair cut at Rudy's in Santa Monica and my experience was overall wonderful. I called ahead of time and put my name on the list, so I only waited about 5 minutes. The staff was really friendly and the girl that cut my hair listened to what I wanted and my concerns. My cut is basically perfect and the bill was under $40 including tip (I have mid-length hair), making in one of the cheapest cuts I've had since puberty. I will definately return.
*Note: The style and invironment is very much alternative (hipsters, tattoos, etc) so if you simply want a basic cut, this might not be where you want to go. I didn't find the staff pretentious or all, but I could see that it might be that way at the Silverlake location
- Pros: Cheap, good haircuts, you can find free parking in the neighborhoods.
- Cons: Nothing, really. And I usually have a few complaints about salons.
