Not a good place to have a wedding
by porkjello at Citysearch
I've attended 2 weddings at this overrated building. Granted, it's decent looking but the architecture and overall look of the building did not make me feel any sense of awe or reverence. My mom put it best when she said that the place looks more like a museum than a cathedral. The place looks very bland with all muted shades of brown and tan. With all the money spent on this place and all the hoopla made about it, I was expecting something else but I guess the archdiocese needed to shift some of their building funds to pay for all the legal fees they incurred for all the settlements from people that were "wronged" by not-so-righteous priests. Keep up the good work Mahoney.
- Cons: Nothing worth writing home about
Spectacular downtown cathedral emerges as an architectural and spirtual landmark.
by Kim Cooper at Citysearch
In Short
This massive 3,000-seat Catholic cathedral serves as a bold focal point for Bunker Hill and the Hollywood Freeway. While the sandy concrete exterior is austere and administrative, the interior and courtyards offer many elaborate details. Must-sees include the 80-foot tall, 45-ton cherrywood pipe organ; massive hydraulic doors decorated with Christian images and designs symbolizing L.A.'s cultural diversity; and a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
