My favorite place downtown

by shawn puckett

I have been going to Pete's for some time now. The staff is always so great. The food is perfect and one of the best wine list around for the level of dining you experience. And I just have two things left to say "Bread Pudding and Blue Cheese Fries". If you haven't been its a great place to just hang out with friends and drink a cup of coffee and a great place to have a first date.

  • Pros: Great location Great food
  • Cons: Can't think of one

Apparently the food is as bad as their customer service

by marab88

I know of two people who ate here on the same night, ordered two entirely different dishes and both became very ill that same night. When one of the people called to notify them, the woman who identified herself as the general manager immediately went on the defensive and told them that since no one else complained that it couldn't be true (the dumb twit didn't even consider that perhaps they were the first to call!).

The person told the GM that she wasn't looking for anything (e.g., free meal, etc.), but rather just wanted to let them know so that no one else gets sick - and that she called them vs. calling the health dept, the GM hung up on her.

These people are both elderly and not very web savvy - although extremely intelligent and coherent individuals - which is why I'm writing this for them.

Clearly Pete's Cafe's service is about as good as their food. I would avoid altogether. I know I am.

Downtown staple

by BobDob

The first time I went to Pete's was in 2003 I think. Main Street was still an adventure in itself and Pete's was a little oasis. Their food was fantastic and their drinks won me over. We moved Downtown shortly thereafter and went to Pete's pretty regularly. I still love the food and the place, but the crowd's changed over the years and the servers are often too-cool-for-school. I haven't been for a while now, but I have tremendous respect for the management, as they were pioneers in the Historic Core.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: The people

No Respect!

by indzine

While recently dining at Pete's Cafe my purse fell over. I retrieved my pill box but was not aware that my credit card size camera had also fallen out. I called the following day and the day after to no avail. After speaking with 3 different employees, one a manager, I requested a call back either way, found or not . When I didn't hear back from any of the 3 employees, I sent a e-mail to Pete requesting a good look around and either a phone call or return e-mail. No luck, I sent a second e-mail, practically begging, and still no response. Too bad for Pete's, I will never go back there and have told my friends not to go there either. I am often downtown for theatre etc. where there are many good choice of places to eat were they treat their patrons with respect!!!

  • Pros: Good food
  • Cons: Will not return phone calls or e-mails!

DO NOT Order The Helman Burger!!

by LALadyLA

My friend broke her tooth on a ROCK that was in the meat of the "prized" Helman Burger. The staff was not supportive of the sensitive situation and refused to reimburse for the tooth. The staff at this place is as lame as the clientele.

Bistro-style dining emerges in a historic Downtown L.A. bank building.

by Contributor

In Short
Transformed from its original function as a bank, this massive dining room is a sight to behold with high ceilings, parquet floors, ornately decorated lamps, glossy wood tables and a gorgeous art deco bar. Businessmen, shoppers and local bohos are usually found having a relaxed drink or celebrating some festive occasion. As for the menu, think classic American with a modern twist: Macaroni and cheese is a mix of many cheeses, including white cheddar and goat, while a grilled cheese can be prepared with crab, Brie and avocado salsa. For brunch, there's smoked-salmon crepes and eggs Benedict.

WOW!!!!!!!! I had a GREAT experiece at Pete's, the food was GREAT !!! took my cousin to dinner for her birthday and we had the flat iron steak followed by the delicious bread pudding topped with strawberys. The service was wonderful, I was a little confuse about who was my waiter but the person who serve us was GREAT!!!!! his name is ROMAN he was always checking to see if we needed aniything, took our order, brought us drinks and was wonderful untill the time we left. The only time I got to see my waiter was when he brought our check and that was a little disapointed. Other than that ROMAN gave us GREAT service and I Loved it!!!!!!!!!!! Surely we will be back again :)

veggie burguer is extremely heart clogging but worth every bite

by bellamusa

I agree the service is lacking and I really don't understand why servers are so arrogant if they are in fact servers, but besides the service... The veggie burguer is an awesome option for the non-carnivores that miss a classic burguer. The cheese on this meal is eye-popping but the taste is unforgettable. The taste and texture makes you wonder if they slipped in a meat patty and I mean that in a good way. The blue cheese fries will be sure to shorten your life span but you will die smiling.

BAD FOOD, EVEN WORSE SERVICE

by DTVince

The food and the service are HORRIBLE. Servers are uniformly INCOMPETENT (forgetting to bring orders, getting orders wrong, etc.), but incompetence mixed with arrogance is UNBEARABLE. The food is way OVERPRICED and is barely a step above INSTITUTIONAL (and has a dangerous propensity to arrive undercooked). Be watchful for the automatic gratuity added to your bill. There was a time when Pete's was one of the few places in Downtown. It remains popular because competition remains somewhat limited. Do yourself a favor: avoid Pete's and check out one of the many other worthy Downtown restaurants.

  • Pros: Somewhat of an interesting scene on Artwalk nights
  • Cons: You name it: low-quality food, incompetent servers and the same old decor.

Fantastic Food!

by veeveeun

It has only been about 3 weeks since I was first introduced to Pete's and have been hooked ever since! I've been there about 4 times so far and I love everything that I've tried thus far. The restaurant has a cool air to it and the food is excellent. My first experience there was for lunch with some coworkers, I had the Ahi Tuna salad, which was delish! Second and third times were for brunch, I had the eggs benedict and tried the breakfast quesadilla, again... delish! The last time, I had the turkey and brie sandwich on sour dough bread with bacon cheddar fries... this dish was really great! They are very generous with the brie, it is literally oozing out of the sandwich (this is something that people don't see everyday) and the bacon cheddar fries are definiately a sinful delight. I would recommend Pete's to anyone who wants good food and good service at a reasonable price.
