I am relatively new to the sushi world and I've never been to any of the 'famous' sushi places (i.e. Koi, Nobu, etc.). That being said ... I have a hard time believing that they are any better than what I ate at Kiku last night. It was awesome! I tried several different rolls and each was outstanding. I sat at the sushi bar and the service was great. Vince (the sushi chef) was outstanding ... even slipped me a sample of one of his personal favorites (was the best thing I ate all night).

For those that enjoy a low-key sushi experience with outstanding flavors, etc ... you gotta try this place. I've been in L.A. now for a few weeks on business and I've been to several different sushi spots for lunch or dinner ... this so far was the best.

Enjoy.

  • Pros: Good Service, good sushi, good prices
  • Cons: no fountain drinks (pop in a can)

I went with a good friend having heard many good things about Kiku. The waitress got both our orders wrong, and didn't seem to understand when we explained. Once that was straightened out, a waiter wanted to move our table and spilled the miso soup on us. Then ten minutes after eating the sushi, I became violently ill -- this has never happened to me before at any restaurant. And my friend's tempura was soggy, not crisp, he briefly complained, but ate it anyway. My friend spoke to owner, and she was very rude. When my friend got home, he was ill all night. Needless to say we won't be back, the other Japanese restaurant several blocks down is great, even though it is part of a chain, the food is always fresh and tasty ... and has never made me ill.

  • Pros: quaint
  • Cons: Bad Service, Poor Food

Definitely a cool joint, all the locals will tell you - this is the place to go for sushi. They hired some new chefs a while ago (I'm not clear on the details), but they really know what they are doing. The tempura is great, even the simple cucumber rolls are delicious. And the staff is very friendly, greeting you as soon as you walk in and chatting with eachother and with regular customers. Definitely a friendly, local favorite.

  • Pros: Food, service
  • Cons: Parking

Initially when I went here, the food was great, but the service was not so good. Afterwards, I didn't really plan on going back. However, a few months later, I was craving sushi and rolls and Kiku was the most convenient place to go. So, I gave it another chance.

The food was great, like before. They have some of the best and unique rolls I've ever tried, and it didn't make a huge dent in the wallet. The service was surprisingly good this time. I can tell that this little restaurant has made a huge improvement since the last time I've gone.

Because of this visible improvement, I would now highly recommend this place if you're just looking to eat delicious Japanese food for a reasonable price. It doesn't seem like it's a good place for kids or large groups, but for a group of two to four, it's perfect.

(I also heard Steven Spielberg was spotted there, true story?)

  • Pros: Great food, improved service, nice environment
  • Cons: Not intended for children or large groups

I agree, our waiter sucked too.. Food was good, except my salad which tasted like it was washed in a chemical then not rinsed but that didn't phase the waiter

we use to be regulars, but today was our last dinner there. the service was horrible. first of all, they sat us at a table by the door because they couldnt, or should i say wouldnt, clean the table that was away from the door. secondly, our vegetable tempura appetizer never came and the waitress never followed up. i had to finally cancel the order since all the main dishes had already been served. the waitresses were not very accomodating nor attentive to customers.

In Short
Dressed-down hipsters mingle with businessmen and trendy couples by the sushi bar, on the sun-drenched sidewalk, or in the small dining room. Polaroids of customers, celebrities included, decorate bare walls. The menu includes standard-issue spicy tuna roll, sea urchin wrapped with mint leaf, and the Larchmont roll--tempura deep-fried California roll topped with spicy sauce. Diners can also order salad or other entrees, like tako salad--baby mesclun greens and julienned carrots with raw squid and spicy dressing.

I am very said to report my favorite all you can eat sushi spot (KiKu) has now stopped offering the all you can eat option. As soon as we heard the news we immediately left in search of a replacement.

Without the all you can eat option KiKu is just another sushi spot in a sea of thousands. We have now replaced KiKu with Maeda's all you can eat offering.
