I'd rather go to the Abbey

by fiorebella at Citysearch

Literally just got back and was not at all a bit impressed! I went w/ a friend who is gay and he as well was not impressed. The gogo dancers did not know what the hell they were doing except for one. They mostly just stood there and we paid a cover to see them dance...yawn! The hookahs outside were a nice treat, but the "hot Persian boys" that were supposed to be there all night I guess never showed. There were not any good looking men there and my friend agreed. On a good note the bartenders were very friendly and their drinks were pretty stiff, two and i couldn't see straight, I'd say I got my money's worth there! I've been to better bars, I guess on Persian night the word needs to get out to bring in dancers who will actually move and bring in more good looking people, the dj and bartenders know exactly what they're doing, so no problem there....

  • Pros: Stiff drinks, friendly staff, good dj
  • Cons: where are all the hot boy

Friendly Silver Lake gay bar is a welcome addition to the neighborhood's Levi's-and-leather circuit.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
In a very short time, the new owners of the former Woody's Hyperion have succeeded in resuscitating a long-deserted venue, filling the void left when Detour turned into hipster hang 4100. With all outside light blocked out, MJ's has the vibe of a flame-lit subterranean grotto, and is ornately furnished in cooling, lacquered tones of black, grey and red. Diversions include a pinball machine, pool table, dartboard and endless loops of '70s gay physique films appear on video monitors. Weekend music runs the gamut from speed metal and industrial disco to classic rock and hip-hop, yet the large dance floor doesn't get much use.

The Draw
MJ's attracts scruffy younger guys and a respectable number of mostly straight women. The sweet-natured--and great-looking--bartenders concoct lethal libations, and when they control the music selection on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, the obscure electronica selection is phenomenal.

Don't Bother

by facetious at Citysearch

until this year this was a great leather bar that catered to the Silverlake crowd. Now with the new owner its just another cheap knock off of a trashy WEHO bar. This used to be the place to be. Great crowd, great bartenders, no attitude, great music, great pool players. Boy, those were the days. Now its a $7 cover just about everynight. Dont waste your time.

  • Pros: Great mexican food ACCROSS THE STREET
  • Cons: Original owner MJ moved away.

Good Neighorhood Bar/ Entertainment

by mickmaloy at Citysearch

I wanted to post a review of my assessment of my experience with MJ's this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. Despite parking could be a challenge to those who arrive well after 10pm ( I arrived early Friday evening around 9:30), the employees and Chris (the owner) were very polite and accomodating. While I cannot dispute the previous posters experience, the staff including the bartenders and the dancers are very friendly and outgoing. The music was very good on Friday and Sunday however I was lost on Saturday which I suspect plays current music which I have no knowledge of since I don't listen to the radio. I did not feel the bar was trashy nor filled with attitude or fashinista's but it didn't matter to me, I had a great time.

  • Pros: Great attitude/ vibe and notable eye candy/ draws a great crowd
  • Cons: parking but not atypical for the location it seems

A Trashy Rip-Off

by togi55 at Citysearch

I've been here several times since it opened (due to the paucity of options in the neighborhood) and always have left disgruntled. I thought the new (2007) ownership might be an improvement but decided my most recent visit would be my last. I was charged $7 at the door, and after asking why was told I was paying for a Wednesday night "dancing boys" show that was supposed to start at 10. At 10:45 there was no sign of any show about to start and I was derided when I asked for my $7 back -- I mean Wednesday's a school night and the poster, when I stumbled across it, promised a 10 p.m. show. I was subject to this derision, mind you, after buying two beers from the stuck-on-himself bartender and standing around in a half-empty bar for 45 minutes waiting for a show to start. Frankly, this place is unprofessionally run and any "hot" cruising atmosphere is ruined by the always-in-attendance West Hollywood fashonistas who insist on bringing their female friends along for the ride. Wrong bar, wrong neighborhood, and trashy in the bad sense.

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Parking issues, rude staff, overpriced
