Stay away, dirty and meat doesn't get cooked
by myanimator
I've given this South Street a couple tries but every time I get more disappointed. The last time, my Cheese Steak's meat wasn't even cooked properly.
This place may fly for those not from PA, but for those that are or want the true experience stay away. The fries are the best things about this place. For a Cheese Steak go a mile down Westwood blvd to "Philly West", there you'll get something more like what you'll find at Jim's or Pat's in Philly.
- Pros: The Fries
- Cons: Dirty, Food not cooked
LA meets Philly!
by juju13es
I came here one day randomly, looking for a place to eat in Westwood, and I was pretty blown away. Their Philly Cheesesteak with fries is a delicious meal for really cheap. And the place really tries to simulate a real Philly restaurant with its Eagles memorabilia and even a portrait of Will Smith!
- Pros: Philly cheesesteaks, cute ambience
- Cons: parking for non-Westwood residents
oversized soggy sandwiches
by baychick
I was disappointed in my sandwich from South Street. I ordered a regular turkey, which ended up being huge and filled with juicy, wet meat and not much else - barely any lettuce or tomatoes. The bread quickly got soaked. I couldn't even leave half to take home at night because I knew it would be greasy and not at all fresh-tasting. I know their specialty is cheesesteak, not turkey, but come on - how hard is it? At least it was pretty cheap. Next time I'll get a sandwich from Subway, Damon & Pythias, Corner Bakery ... anywhere else in Westwood.
- Pros: price, relaxed atmosphere
- Cons: food, parking
they got the bread but not much else
by mikemechill
i went into this place at the recomendation of friend whe said they fly the bread in. expecting a real authentic place i walked in and said, "gimmie a steak wit' an' a slice". The girl behind the counter looked at me like i was some kind of joik.
after i explained what i wanted, i got the food real fast. the slice was pretty good. the steak, however, was a different story.
even after explaining it to them, they gave it to me witout. the bread wasn't cooked all the way and i was expecting some wiz maybe? nah... swiss or something... a good cheese but not what i was expecting.
considering my experience, i am writing this place off as a "we fly the bread in" gimmick.
i think the only way i'm gonna be truly satisfied is if i break down and buy me a plane ticket.
- Pros: they got the breadq
- Cons: nuthin' else
best chili fries!
by rachel1215
cool lil eatery---a lot of times theyll give their support for ucla fundraisers and groups. i love their chili cheese fries...right up there with pink's. its a tiny place and can be easily missed from the street. big screen tv inside.
- Pros: chili fries, big tvs, good prices
- Cons: tiny tables and low lighting (not ideal for studying), parking (broxton has a free 1st-two-hours lot before 6pm. after 6pm there is a flat rate of $3)
Best Philly Cheesesteak in L.A.
by igottawallet2
I recently heard on KROQ that South Street had the "best cheesesteaks in the west, so I thought I would check it out myself. As a Pennsylvania native, I couldn't agree more! Yeah, it costs a little more, but you get what you pay for! If you want the taste of (my) home in the sunny weather of Los Angeles, check out South Street for sure!
- Pros: Quality Meats, Fresh Bread, A taste like no other
- Cons: Only 2 locations
FINALLY...a decent cheesesteak
by fabooj
I'm not from Philly, but I've had "authentic" cheesteaks from friends and family who are. There is NOTHING on the west coast that can be described as "cheesteak". I came across the South Street in Westwood a few days after it opened. DELISH! I pretty much wrote every restaurant I had ever eaten a "cheesesteak" from and told them to remove it from their menu. I mean, how can you serve a cheesesteak then look at me crossed eyed when I mention hot sauce (NOT TAPATIO, you dolts!). Now, I can't wait to go visit Philly just to try the real thing. My friends from Philly say that it's the closest thing to home they can find. Now, if we can just get some decent BBQ in this town (KC, preferably).
- Pros: cheeesteaks, Hank's
- Cons: wimpy sandwiches, cheesy decor, pricey
Authentic cheese steak shop offers bites of brotherly love in the heart of Westwood.

The Scene
After searching L.A. for the perfect cheese steak, former Philadelphians Mitch Goldman and Smitty Smith decided to open their own shop. The decor is Philly-meets-Tinseltown: Faux exposed brick walls are covered with Eagles memorabilia and celebrity head shots (like one of Will Smith, whose autograph proclaims "Just like home!").
The Food
While hoagies and salads are offered, it's the authentic cheese steaks that make taste buds sing. Like any good sandwich, it starts with the bread, so dough is flown in from Philly's famed bakery, Amoroso's, for those crisp yet doughy rolls. Chips of rib eye and sweet onion are grilled to succulent perfection, then topped with a delectable blend of American and provolone cheeses. A hot veggie sandwich topped with tangy, garlicky marinara is a good vegetarian alternative. For dessert, try Philly favorites like Tastykakes, Italian water ice or peanut chews. The spicy fries can be too much; instead, order plain fries then flavor them yourself with spice shaker.
not like philly

I was enticed by the offerings of fresh Amoroso rolls, Tastycakes, water ice, soft pretzles... Unfortunately, having the proper ingredients do not make their cheesesteaks stack up to the real thing. The sandwiches are small, overpriced, and understuffed. After trying this place out twice (hoping that the first time was a bad day), I've decided to go back to my don't-bother-trying-to-get-cheesesteaks-outside-of-philly mantra. For someone who grew up eating these sandwiches on a weekly basis, this is tough but I'll deal.
- Pros: Philly memorabilia
Greasy and delicious
by joshheald
After leaving Philadelphia, my friends and I were dismayed at the lack of delicious cheesesteaks available elsewhere. Thankfully the owners of this gem (both former Philadelphians) felt the same and actually did something about it. For homesick Philadelphians, this is the best steak you'll get on the west coast. For those who have yet to take part in the Philly experience of standing in line during 20-degree weather to taste a delicious steak from Pat's or Geno's at 3 in the morning -- this is a great substitution (without the cold weather). And be sure to try other Philly favorites such as genuine water ices and Philly pretzels. Great menu, authentic food.
- Pros: Free parking, Flat-screen TV
- Cons: Few tables
