Fake Maple Syrup Says It All
by homecooking
I wanted to take my visiting brother and sister out to a nice, local (i.e., less than 5-min drive from my home) breakfast spot. I was tired of Paradise Cove Beach Cafe (or whatever it's called nowadays), so I thought we'd try The Hideaway. The menu promised real maple syrup with the french toast. I've been buying maple syrup since I graduated from college and now for my kids because we can't stand that Log Cabin or corn syrup fakery. The french toast was not bad, but that syrup resembled maple syrup in color only. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she had the nerve to say, "No, it's real maple syrup." I demurred. She insisted. My sister and brother's meals were okay, kind of resembling what people buy frozen and heat up in a MW, toaster or toaster oven. (At least that's what they said after I kept asking, and they were being polite.) Save your pennies and buy a delicious breakfast at Lily's (on Pt. Dume near Wamu) and eat it al fresco at the beach.
- Pros: Plenty of free parking, no competing stores for parking
- Cons: You'd better buying frozen fare and heating it up yourself
Best kept SECRET!!!
by MalibuPrincess032289
Living in malibu we are limited to restaurant choices. I used to go to the Hideaway Cafe a couple of years ago but the managment was horrible and the staff seemed unhappy. I have heard rumors that the new owners were ambitious young women that attended every customer with a smile so i decided to give the another chance... I was pleasently suprised to experienced a lovely dinner. The view was beautiful, the food was delicious and the whole staff was very caring and attentive. Im glad to have found Malibu's best kept secret!!!
Give them a chance and you too will be surprised!
- Pros: Friendly service, great food, and NEW MANAGMENT!
- Cons: Hidden
Okay! Not really outstanding
by doll83
I went there at a late afternoon on a Wednesday. The joint was sparsely populated but there was a good vibe though. The view over Malibu and the sunset was really nice and perfected the cozy atmosphere. Tables were covered with white and green table cloths which reminded me at a hospital's emergency room. We only ordered tea and coffee, though it was enough to realize that the restaurant's tableware was totally worn-out. A white coffee cup had dark coffee stains outside and looked very worn. Nobody worries about the table wear here, as this is the place to enjoy the company of a special person, have a business lunch or a cozy after work dinner. Service was a friendly.
- Pros: Food, ambience
- Cons: Tableware totally worn-out
The worst place EVER!!!
by FoodGuru92
Absolutely the worst service and dollar to food ratio I have ever experienced. We had to seat ourselves, the view for Malibu is mediocre, and the service was HORRIBLE. We sat for 15 minutes before we were even asked what we would like to drink. Cut to 10 minutes later we got warm beers and no water (which we asked for twice). I looked at my lady and said the service is HORRIBLE. Lets give the appetizers a chance. When we got our $15.00 "Crab cakes" (which were mostly corn bread) we were disappointed to say the least. We asked for hot sauce TWICE and didn't get it. BOOOOOOOO.
Act two, we decided to try the close to $10.00 dollar onion rings. When the plate arrived there were exactly 9 of the most PATHETIC onion rings you could eever imagine. Burger King's rings would have been better and much more cost effective.
At this point it was time to pay the bill and cut our losses. Don't EVER go to this dump if you can avoid it. Not worth the money or the view.
Great food and setting for a date

Went on a busy night, parking a leaves a little to be desired, but the walk up the door made up for it. Took advantage of the nice seating outside since the weather was nice. Very beautiful seatting complimented by good food. If you can go where dinner will be at sunset.
- Pros: Food, view
- Cons: Parking

Hideaway is Back!
by jmoviemanic
We went back to the Hideaway for my significant other's birthday after not going there for a year. We had stop going there because the excellent waiter they had departed and their food and service had declined. Too bad for a perectly located restaurant above the cliff's facing Zuma and around the corner from westward beach. But, to my surprise- new staff, new management & old excellent chef brought back! The food was back up to par & our waitress, Bethany, was top notch. We split a lobster salad. It was tasty with adequate amount of lobster. I had the Pistachio crusted atlantic salmon and my lady had the grilled chicken breast. She also had a glass of the house Chardonnay ( Fetzer, I believe) Presentation was nice and the food was excellent. The hostess was very nice and the restrooms were clean. The menu prices were reasonaable. We will start returing to the Hideaway. It seems the new management has this beautifully located restaurant back on track.
- Pros: service , abmience, food
The Triumphant return of THE REAL Hideaway Cafe
by zumaman
It's true folks. It's safe to return to The Hideway Cafe!
I heard rumors so I had to check it out. Wow! Like it was before only better. Jose the chef has returned and I tried his venison special on Wednesday night and it was insane. I am going back Friday to see what he's come up with next. I live within walking distance, so this is going be a Hideaway summer fer sure!
The new managers are really sweet and cool. They are going to have live music soon too!
Geez, I sound like I work for them. Nope, I'm just a happy local that's glad to see his favorite spot to eat, drink and watch the sun go down on Zuma beach return to it's former glory.
Thanks Hideaway Cafe!

We have new management, new waiters and our fabulous two chefs have returned! We still have our spectacular views, an incredible new menu and the atmosphere has improved by leaps and bounds. This is not the restaurant you once knew! We welcome you to return and see just how different things have become and look forward to serving you!

Disaster
by pennylane1977
I had my wedding and reception there. THAT WAS THE WORST MISTAKE I HAVE EVER MADE. The waiters were awful, I did not get the champagne toast (which I paid for). The men's bathroom toilet was backed up!! the manager/owner was rude to my guest. She pushed my guest out by 10. DO NOT HAVE A WEDDING THERE!! You will regret it. It was suppose to be the best day of my life, but it was actually the worst.
- Pros: Food was good
- Cons: Service was bad
