YUM! Super delicious Japanese / French fusion, Very reasonable prices

by foodie90405 at Citysearch

Wow! Each time I come here, I enjoy it even more. Went over the weekend, and had to share what a fabulous meal we had: delicious goat cheese bites, perfectly fried anchovies, and sensational mushrooms & pork. Best of all, the entire meal for two (with more than a bottle of wine, and a cheese plate for dessert) came in right around $100, which I think is VERY reasonable for the quality of food. We didn't have to wait at all (got there early though) and thought our waiter was great. Overall, very highly recommended for dates or groups. The only drawback is that the tables are a little tight, but really, I think this is a great place.

  • Pros: Fabulous food -- especially fish, good (reasonably priced) wine list, great value
  • Cons: Tables are a bit tight, inside gets noisy

Rich Sauces and tasty food

by dawnfazio818 at Citysearch

Orris is The best fine dining experience one could enjoy. The food, service and atmosphere is absolutely superb. From the time you enter the restaurant, until you leave hours later, you are delighted in selections of fine food and french wine. I'm happy to see that after coming to Orris over the past years that the restaurant earned high rankings from Fodors.

My favorite new Japanese/French/Tapas Restaurant

by spafreak2008 at Citysearch

Orris is a funky Japanese french tapa kind of a place. They have wonderful service and really tasty food. I love almost everything here. There are always a couple of specials worth hearing. The vibe is hip and friendly. I loved the tuna tartar and the fried chicken. I have never had a bad experience here. The servings are on the small side, but really good. It's a great date spot. All of my friends that I have turned onto this place really like it. and we have all been back.

  • Pros: Delicious Food
  • Cons: Servings on the smaller side

Good Japanese small plates

by martinikitty13 at Citysearch

Orris is a Japanese small plates place located on a stretch of Sawtelle inhabited by Japanese businesses. It?s a small, cozy space where the focus is on the open and busy kitchen. Service is efficient and quick. The food was served quickly and were all quite good. I have to admit however that nothing was so extraordinary as to inspire me to come rushing back ? but it?s a nice place to eat and drink with friends if you happen to be in the area. It is quite crowded so reservations are recommended.

We shared a nice bottle of pinot grigio and had the following plates:

- cheese plate (nice selection of cheeses ? goat cheese, a creamy petite basque, etc. ? other than the goat cheese, they were quite mild. Pleasant but not great.)

- tuna tartare with warm crusty bread and seaweed salad (good, but I?m a bit tired of this dish; although the addition of the slightly sweet seaweed salad was a nice touch) ? they were however strangely stingy with the bread.

- Crab and cucumber salad (I really liked this one ? very fresh and sweet and light)

- Pork medallions (this was ok, not sure what it was but I didn?t really like the mushy texture and aftertaste of this dish).

- Seared foie gras over eggplant (I also really liked this one ? perfectly balanced in a wonderful, sweet sauce).

- Shrimp mousse ravioli with mushroom sauce (ok, but I was slightly underwhelmed).

- Quail over white beans (again, just ok).

- Fried chicken (pretty good, but nothing special).

The other reviews have been so phenomenal on this place. perhaps that's why I felt slightly disappointed.

Fabulous Food and Service

by jnrcal at Citysearch

Orris could be my new favorite restaurant in LA-- the food was fabulous, and the services was equally as good. You really can't go wrong with anything you order here, they also have a great wine list with reasonable prices. Parking is a nightmare, I recommend the valet lot behind the restaurant or if you have a lot of patience you can look endlessly for street parking.

  • Pros: Food, Wine & Service
  • Cons: Parking

Inventive, Incredible!

by deliciojones at Citysearch

I was initially turned off by the idea of fusing French and Japanese cuisine, as well as the strange strip-mallish location; however, words fail to describe the culinary delights offered at Orris. The place is small, the staff is lean, however the tapas style food is creative and beautifully prepared. We started with an unusual take on the caprese salad, with grilled heirloom tomato and pink Hawaiian sea salt - I could have eaten a dozen of these! Next came the king crab legs (my favorite!), followed by a filet mignon with Roquefort butter. We decided to conclude with the black cod with basil mashed potatoes, but our friendly server insisted we try the foie gras and eggplant dish. Unable to decide, we ordered both and left without regret. In total, we spent around $100 (with tip) for the 5 dishes, plus one drink each. Each course was flawless, and though the service wasn't top notch, it was impressive considering their teensy tiny staff. While the decor is unimpressive, the food will absolutely leave a fantastic impression and the next time I'm in Westwood, I'll be sure to make a stop at Orris.

  • Pros: Some delicious standbys share the menu with several creative standouts
  • Cons: Unimpressive decor, but with flavors like that, it really doesn't matter!

Delicious and a good time!

by karina2219 at Citysearch

I took my friend here for her birthday and, though we were hungry, we ordered three plates. Though the plates were small, each plate was delicious, as well as presented beautifully. The service was great, and the waitors were very pleasant. We got there at 7 on a Thursday night, and people are started to wait in line around 8:30/9. Get there earlier if you want to be seated right away!

foodie restaurant

by tripindicular1 at Citysearch

This is an excellent restaurant and a great value. It is high end gourmet French Japanese creatively and expertly excecuted. The ambiance looks like a former sushi bar, which this restaurant is not. The service is friendly and professional. It feels hip without being at all pretentious or trendy. The portions are relatively small because they are tapas but they are very rich, flavorful and interesting and it is great to be able to try a few. Especially amazing were the ahi sashimi, foie gras and beet dishes. One thing to know is that they do not take reservations and this is a very small restaurant.

  • Pros: great value, awesome food
  • Cons: very small and they don't take reservations

Very Tasty.

by chudjr at Citysearch

I read the reviews and knew to expect fairly small size portions. Everything we ordered was delicious. The combination of flavors was fun. It was not as expensive as I thought, two of us ate until we were somewhat full for around $80.

Love it!

by humpsushi at Citysearch

I tried Orris on Sat and loved it!!! We ordered the seared ahi tuna sashimi (one of the best in town, thick cut and the sause was great), marinated black cod on basil mashed potato (great fusion!), berkshire pork medallion (the creamy sauce begged for bread to dip in but the bread is not provided unless asked for), the crisp veal sweetbread sauteed with shimeji/shitake mushroom was awesome. I was thinking of the ravioli but decided to save it for next time which will be real soon :-). This is serious eating for a reasonable price, imho. The staff was really friendly also.

  • Pros: great food, friendly service, good pace
  • Cons: no reservation
