Fresh! must try. organic.

by CSMobileUser

We have been frequenting blue hen for three years and absolutely looove it! I mean, organic AND vegetarian pho? I have yet to find another place that even serves veggie pho. The staff is always friendly. Obviously expect to wait longer when it's crowded, but the food is so tasty that it's worth the extra five minute wait. I love supporting local businesses, and the fact that they ate consciencious about the environment is a plus. They don't even use styrofoam on take out.

Great Food, Relaxed Atmosphere

by pjacques123

This place is great. We were there 3 times last week. It's our go-to place for quick, easy and delicious. Love the Spring roles. I'm a major carnivore and I love it. Everything I've had there was terrific. The Chicken or Beef Pho noodle soup with sweet and spicy sides, the Curry, the Rice Noodle Salad with Lemon Chicken is insane. They also have amazing homemade desserts, though we're usually too full to partake. Really yummy. Try it, you'll be a believer. No wine or beer but you can bring your own.

  • Pros: Great food, friendly service
  • Cons: No wine or beer, fairly limited choices

Fresh, tasty, not greasy--not overpriced!

by waipahugirl

I was very pleased with my first experience at Blue Hen. Friends at work had recommended it, so I tried it one afternoon. Tried the glass noodles with the imperial rolls-delicious. Light, not greasy. Went back again with my family and ordered and was very pleased with the experience, and we live way across town in Arcadia. It was worth the trip for us!

Blah! Blah! Blah!

by MomeeOfToo

This place will make any Vietnamese ashamed. The service was terrible. The food totally bland and overpriced. Our total bill was over $100 and there were only 4 adults and one child! It was obvious that many patrons were "friends" of the business owner as we overheard conversations. This explained why there appeared to be many people eating there. Truth be told, it was a total rip off. A bowl of pho was almost $10 - was worth about $4.95 and that's being generous. I'm not one to post a rating online but felt I had to give others fair warning. What the PHO!

Bland food, poor service, overpriced, over rated.

by bsdfn

This restaurant claims to be a Vietnamese restaurant but it's far from it. The food is bland, practically watered down. We cleaned our own table after waiting 10 minutes to be seated and there were only four customers in the restaurant when we arrived. I had to remind the waitress, who was more concerned about serving "regulars", for utensils. After she acknowledged that I needed a highchair for my son, she failed to bring one and I brought one to the table myself. One waitress was hasty in taking dishes and even took an uneaten eggroll. I asked for it and she said, "Oh, did you want that? I threw it away." When I received that bill, they charged a mandatory 20% service fee for parties of 6 or more. There were 4 adults and two children, one was 2. Lousy food, lousy service, stay away. I don't know how this place was rated so high.

  • Cons: Everything.

Tasty and Healthy Neighborhood Favorite

by maja18

Once you get over the strip mall location, the cozy eatery has a modern feel and very tasty food. The Pho is my favorite in town, just the right combination of tang and savory and the bowl is big so I always eat too much. Turmeric fries and fantastic, as are the rolls. Good curries and sandwiches, my only complaint is that in the 2 years I've been eating here I've grown very tired of their menu. Dinners all resemble one another, brown sauce and lacking in fresh vegetables, the Pho is good when you're in the mood for it but there aren't many more exciting options. I would recommend more specials, more vegetables in the dinner dishes, and maybe a nod to the locals who have been coming since they opened. My husband and I eat here often and know all the wait staff and owner by sight, yet have never been acknowledged as return clients. A bit disappointing*

  • Pros: Great Pho, Tonics and Fries, Cute Atmosphere
  • Cons: Not overly friendly, everyone seems a bit down

AWESOME

by mrmittens

This place is GREAT. Not at all surprised that the guy that wrote a bad review was a PERVERT and a McDonalds fan. He probably weighs 400 pounds, and probably won;t be full anywhere he eats. Just because this place serves HEALTHY sized portions and not buckets of fries with 2 lbs of beef doesn't mean it's bad.

This place has AMAZING food, and the price is just fine. It doesn't cost $7 for 3 bags of garbage food, because they don't sell garbage like McDonalds! Try it and be amazed!

  • Pros: Great environment, great food.
  • Cons: It closes mid-day, and that makes me sad... haha

Just Okay

by foodie1984

This place was just okay. I have often left hungry here because their portions aren't exactly huge. Their prices are reasonable though. Not a destination place, but if you happen to be in the area it's not a bad choice.

You will leave this place hungry and mad

by tonytran213

When I first walked in the place looked very nice, cute and cozy. This all changed when the waitress served us. The waitress has a nice rak and is quite tall but her personality stinks! She was very unwelcoming and unfriendly. I looked at the menu and there is no beef...hence Blue Hen. The Pho at this place is 9 bucks! I expected a large portion but ended getting very little to eat. If you are the owner of this place please stop being stingy because you will lose many customers this way! This place does not fill you up at all. I went with 3 other friends and they all still felt hungry right after the lunch and were dissatisfied. After we paid, we did not even get a thank you from the waitress. When ended up going to Mcdonalds and spent in total 7 bucks on tasty filling food. I highly do not recommend this place. Bad service, so-so food and very small portions. Not worth your money and time.

  • Pros: Nice cozy decorated place
  • Cons: Not worth the time and money. Very small portions and unfriendly service.

One more local secret treasure

by netter1

Having lived in Eagle Rock for about 30 years, I'm overjoyed that business owners and chefs are finding our little corner of the city. Eagle Rock has always had Casa Bianca...but variety hasn't been our culinary highpoint. All of that is changing...THANKFULLY. Blue Hen (although open for almost 2 years) is a new discovery for me. I have to admit that it's location in my dry cleaner's strip mall was a little off-putting. However, the other night my husband and I sucked it up and stopped in for dinner.

Before we even decided to stop, I warned my husband (the definition of a "Meat & Potatoes Man") that Blue Hen was known for it's vegetarian bent. However, he was curious and we decided to try something new. I'm glad we did. We shared an order of Imperial Rolls. They were crunchy and flavorful...made better by the dipping sauce. I thought my husband would go for the curry chicken, but he chose the chicken sandwich with turmeric fries. He surprised me by raving over the carrot/radish salad in his sandwich. He kept trying to get me to take a bite, but I was busy enjoying my bowl of porridge. It's a menu item they only serve on the weekends, and as an aficionado of the Chinese version of rice porridge, I had to give it a try. Essentially this version mirrors the Chinese version with one glaring exception -- brown rice. I am a lover of brown rice...ordering it whenever it's a menu option at local restaurants. However, I was not prepared for how different the porridge tastes with brown rice. It wasn't displeasing...just unexpected. The soup was so filling (maybe because of the brown rice) that I only ate 1/2 of it.

For my husband...the highlight of the night was his lime soda and the banana bread pudding. We'll definitely be going back.
