Bizarre Experience
by iamcam
have heard several good things about Memphis from friends and people I work with although I'm sad to say I was very disappointed! We were the only two people in the entire restaurant and the music was blasting which made our experience very awkward. The wait staff was polite but I felt they were a bit too impersonal and distant again making us feel awkward in a giant, dark restaurant by ourselves. I had the shrimp (it was okay) but Im told the fried chicken is good. I wasn't a huge fan of the gumbo. I probably would have had a better time if there were more people in the restaurant because the ambiance is pretty cool.
- Pros: Ambience
- Cons: Food was okay
Stay Away!!

I have never given a restaurant a bad review but Memphis compels me to do so. I was there on Friday, Dec. 14th. I was a guess in a large birthday group. I ALWAYS read restaurant reviews before selecting it, but for Memphis I did not have a chance to do so. For starters the drink I ordered a simple vodka tonic was all wrong. The bartender made if with vodka and vermouth, yes VERMOUTH! The drink was bad but I drank it because I selected expensive vodka. When we were seated, no water or bread was brought to us. Finally when the water was brought to us, it was spilled in front of me. I proceeded to clean it up; the servant looked at me and asked "did you want another napkin?" I looked at him and said, "Yes, that would be helpful". Then our waitress made an appearance and brought us the biscuits with no plates. She then brought the plates after we were done eating. The waitress had no people skills whatsoever. WORSE service I have EVER experienced. The food was typical, at best; this place needs to get new management or else is going to go out business. One person in our party never got his plate until he asked the waitress for a status. He was told that the order was never placed. If you want fried chicken go to KFC. If you want better service go to Dennis, IHOP, you will get someone much more personable.
- Pros: biscuits
- Cons: everything else
NEVER AGAIN!!! Consider this a WARNING!!!
by jflores73
Everything over priced and the WORST customer service i have EVER experienced!
Starting off with the bar: Awful vodka tonics for $11. Bartender did not even know how to make a vodka tonic; it was bad and he was REALLY slow at making drinks!
Moving on to the dining experience: We sat there for well over an hour before we received menus or even water brought to our table. After our orders were finally taken, they brought biscuits but no plates. I ended up using my napkin as a plate for my biscuit. We ate the biscuits and THEN the waitress brought us small plates. Dont know why since we had no need for them any longer? I then paid $18 for so called coconut shrimp. It was 4 regular size shrimps (not even jumbo size) sorrounding a simple bland salad. Not worth the price what so ever.
The Service: Really bad attitude and unattentive; bad service all around. Waitress made her frustration apparent with our party. One of our guest's dinner was never placed so we were all eating while he watched. His order was finally brought 30 minutes after i was done with my dinner.
When the check finally came around, they had the nerve to include a 19% gratuity to the bill and not only that, but the receipt still has a spot for an "additional tip" as if anyone would do that after experiencing such a fiascol! As everyone knows, a percentage for a tip is based on how good the service is and not by what the establishment deems appropriate, which it did. I should have read all the negative reviews about this place on citysearch before my visit. If i would have known, i would have not wasted my time and money...NEVER AGAIN!
- Pros: Biscuits
- Cons: Everything else!
THE WORST DINING EXPERIERNCE...EVER!
by lafoodgirl
i have never written a review on here before, but last night's dinner was SOO horrible, i had to share. first, the VALET was on the phone and wouldn't take our car. then, we didn't get menus for about 30 minutes, we NEVER got a single water refill, they FORGOT my entree COMPLETELY, everything was GROSS and COLD. half our dinner party was FINISHED eating BEFORE the other 1/2 was served, and the service was RUDE, UNATTENTIVE, full of ATTITUTUDE. then, we were told "we will take care of you" um, the only thing they took off the bill was my entree...that NEVER CAME! wow, that is soo generous! there was some party downstairs, so i had to wait 20 minutes to use the ladies room as people were doing coke in the bathroom. Overall, the food was HORRIBLE and the service was even WORSE! the place is pretty and that is about it.
- Pros: it's pretty
- Cons: EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING!
So So Food, Rude Management
by scmsw
I read previous reviews before going to the restaurant for a friends birthday but decided to try and give them the benefit of doubt. Bad idea, I should've remembered there's no benefit in doubt. The hot biscuits and barbeque butter were tasty. However, my entree (barbeque prawns over white rice) lacked seasoning and was overpriced for the portion. I let the soso food slide until management was rude about a cancelled Wednesday night event that usually occurs. A friend called several times prior to our visit to the restaurant to confirm the Wednesday night event only to show and have nothing. Since it was my friend's birthday, I asked if she could at least be compensated a drink or appetizer since the purpose of our trip was to be able to eat and have somewhere to hang out afterwards to celebrate. Management basically said oh well, it's not our fault you have people coming to celebrate, we're closing early tonight, good bye! Needless to say, I will never go back again.
great find, a bit dark
by queenbee100
We didn't know about this restaurant and only happened to run into it. It's hidden, way in the back of a small string of bars and cafes off Hollywood Blvd. That's why I say it's "a bit dark." They need to put several strings of white lights (the Christmas kind) around the house so that you can see that something is back there, along with a sign of some sort at the sidewalk on Hollywood Blvd. And, some of the outdoor patio eating area remained a bit too dark for us. But all that aside, we loved the food. The service was great. We were a little ticked that a glass of Coke cost $5.00, but the food was similar in delicious taste and cost to a restaurant we love in Monterey, California. We saw that the menu's fish were gearing toward sustainable fare, but needed to go all the way -- something that I watch out for since I'm familiar with the Seafood Watch program. I also saw that at least one chicken dish used only free-range, corn-fed chicken. My husband had the Halibut entree, which he says was fantastic. I had the Seared Sesame Salmon Spinach Salad (say that five times fast!) with Atlantic salmon, which was really good. The outdoor area was about 3/4 filled when we finished our meal on a Friday night, and the indoor Victorian home looked like it was also 1/2-3/4 full -- we think this place deserves more patrons, but since it is hidden we feel it will be an upward climb for the owners. And, if you like to just hang out for a bit for a drink, they have some really cool leather sofas in the outdoor patio near a fountain with candles to be served drinks and talk. We liked this place enough that we'll go back again some time.
- Pros: great food, interesting and different, place for nice conversation, romantic
- Cons: expensive drinks, hidden, a bit dark
Mandatory Coleslaw? No thanks.
by ldkermani
Despite the intriguing exterior and promises of down-home country cookin', Memphis fails to impress with simple, average food like the basic fried catfish, overly sauced ribs, and the apparently non-substitutable coleslaw aka mayonnaise and cabbage. Although not bad, better examples of southern cooking can be found on any roadside in Tennessee or Texas for under $10.
Memphis should remain a Hollywood Blvd. tourist trap, along with the Wax Museum and Ripley's, and a novelty for those unfamiliar with southern style fare. If only they had offered fried okra...
- Pros: Cool architecture, good service
- Cons: overpriced, hot, just okay food
Delicious good, wonderful atmosphere

My husband and I accidentally came upon Memphis when we were eating at the nearby Cantina, and our 17-month-old daughter wandered up the steps of Memphis. I was instantly charmed by the Queen Anne style house and mostly, the big patio. The next weekend we came back to try out Memphis. Now, I've been to other so-called "soul food" joints in LA and have found the food in all of them to be barely passable. Memphis is a different story-- it is hands-down the best southern-food (but with a CA twist) you can find in LA IMO. Granted, I've had only one dish there- the Free-Range Fried Chicken Breast with half-rack of Baby-back Ribs. The fried chicken was flavorful and juicy-- and no bones, a plus for me! The ribs were fall-off-the bone and delectable. The sweet-potato fries were heaven. I can't wait to come back and try other things on the menu. And Sitting outside on the big patio is the best, so relaxing on a summer evening. I like the fact that it is away from the street, which makes it all the more peaceful. My husband and I hope to have a party out on the patio sometime.
As for the reviewers complaining about it being overpriced-- yes, I agree it is overpriced, but nowadays with menus online, you can see the prices of the food before you decide to go, so IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PRICES, THEN DON'T GO! I mean, would you walk into Neiman's and complain that everything is too expensive? You know what you're getting into as far as $$ goes.
- Pros: Delicious food, wonderful patio for outdoor dining
- Cons: A bit $$, but it's to be expected for a semi-upscale restaurant in Hollywood
Decent food, Good service
by dms365
Like I said in my title the food was decent and the service was good, but there was NO ONE at the restaurant. Allegedly, the restaurant is the oldest house on Hollywood Boulevard and they've been around for over a year, but the place was DEAD and according to the wait staff...it's not getting packed on the weekends anymore either. It seemed odd to us because the food was good and the menu seemed like it had a ton of options. I would recommend outside seating because it is kind of creepy eating in a restaurant with HONESTLY one other couple in the room!
- Pros: Food was tasty, seated immediately
- Cons: The restaurant was empty
