Being a European in LA is a strange experience when it comes to nightlife. The ID obsession is funny at first, and then it becomes annoying, as it did at this bar, when the doorman decided that my driving license was insufficient and asked me if I had my passport with me. Now, is it just me, or does anyone else think that bringing my most important document to a bar, where I could potentially loose my purse after a wild night on the tiles is a really stupid idea?! Or maybe they are taking the Russian theme so seriously that you need a visa to get in? Eventually he did let me in, grudgingly. The decor is great, although Russia is not the first place that sprang to mind - it felt more French in the front room. I had a couple of vodka cocktails, as befits the place, but I have to agree with the nice man at the bar that they use some poor quality vodka - it was vile. Our group ventured into the back room, which had a great atmosphere going, and was just the right side of full, especially for a Wednesday night. We had a lot a fun dancing, which was down to the fact that we had a great group of friends, and not down to the music, which was really poor. Not only was the choice of music odd (Madonna Like a Virgin being a prime example) but the CD kept on skipping. There was a DJ there, but in all honesty, the taxi driver home had a better selection and mixed it better. So in a nutshell, fun can be had if you are in good company, even at this place, which is okay, but not worth any hype.
Pros: Ambience
Cons: Bad music, rough vodka
