ripped off. Go to Bay Cities Deli instead

by mfitzpatrick33 at Citysearch

I ordered 2 mini sandwiches. I signed the receipt. It was around 8 bucks for the two small sandwiches if I correctly remember. I was asked if I wanted a copy of receipt and I regretfully said "no thanks."

The next day I had a charge on my bank account in the amount of nearly 14 dollars.

My belief is I was marked for not asking for a receipt and that the tip line (which shouldn't be on the receipt anyway because the sandwiches were just thrown in a bag) was filled out without my consent. Had I asked for a copy of receipt I don't think this would have happened. While only a few dollars more, I find this behavior appalling and nonetheless, criminal.

Only a few blocks away on lincoln and broadway stands Bay Cities Deli. Go there instead. While the wait is a little longer, it is worth the while. Way more for your buck and best sandwiches in greater LA

Pretzels and muffins

by sbak at Citysearch

I love their 5 grain muffins, they're HEAVY but delicious.

Great fiber.

Also their pretzel bread is yummy but I have not had other food there yet.

Rockenwagner Bakery

This is a great little hole-in-the-wall bakery. It's walking distance from my house, and I frequently pop by to grab a loaf of fresh-baked bread. Hans R. does a great job of providing the basics and some really interesting baked goods. It's got coffee and sandwiches and a couple of sidewalk tables. A very pleasant place to hang and chat and chew.

It is not a full on restaurant or cafe. Just a great Euro-style bakery.

  • Pros: Great baked goods, interesting specialties, convenient location
  • Cons: limited hours

terribly misrepresented

by kuvarica at Citysearch

After sampling many of his items at Farmer's and dining several times at his restaurant, I was truly disappopinted in this location. The website lists a various menu with soup, salads and so forth. When arriving, they only offered a limitied selection of premade sandwiches. Also, be aware that there are a few tables outside with one umbrella and no restroom. It's a spot better suited for a quick coffee and pastry vs. a place to linger over breakfast or lunch.

  • Pros: tasty pretzels
  • Cons: horrible service, not a true cafe

are you looking for laugenbrezel? here you go...

by bananasareformonkeys at Citysearch

i finally made it to this bakery, i had a german weisswurst breakfast planned for my husband and needed the essential pretzels for it. yes, indeed they had them, although they are 50cents in europe and this place here charges 1.50 for them, i had to get them. and yes they also taste like the german ones! since it's the only bakery making my beloved pretzels i will be a returning customer. by the way everything else in that bakery looked really really delicous!

  • Cons: not very reasonably priced

GREAT pretzels

by musey at Citysearch

I've been searching for a great German Bakery in LA, and I've found it! The pretzel baguette is TO DIE FOR. I have to confess that I've only tried their various pretzel incarnations, because that's all I was after... but I would recommend them solely on those goods.

If you love pretzels, don't miss Rockenwagner!

  • Pros: Great pretzels, fast service

Great concept, mediocre baked goods, and unlively/non-enthusiastic service

by amsol at Citysearch

A new concept by Hans Rockenwagner, I was excited when the bakery first opened. The location is a find and the store front is like a bakery from the streets of NYC, as well as the bakery show case and even the baked goods, such as the white chocolate raspberry scone.

As it turns out, the baked goods taste mediocre and the saddest thing is the service. Over 3 visits there in the past 3 mths, the same salesgirl was there (alone) and as non-enthusiastic as ever every time. It seems she is so unhappy to be there and to be selling the goods we're sorry we came in. When you ask what the items are (they're not marked), she tells you in a mousy voice you can hardly hear. We never hear a "hello!", or "thank you!" - there's no energy whatsoever, and note that Hans was there the very first time we went there, you would think he'd notice.

What a shame for such a noteworthy chef/owner with a quaint bakery with creative items.

  • Pros: Cute shop, showcase, unique scones
  • Cons: unenthusiastic salesgirl, lack of key flavors in baked goods

Former Main Street favorite reinvents itself with gourmet German pastries in new Mar Vista setting.

by Contributor at Citysearch

In Short
The small, subtle storefront belies a large and bustling bakery, where white-clad kitchen workers in back churn out a buffet of exotic Bavarian specialties. Pretzels, scones, brioche and strudel highlight a confectionary lineup of freshly prepared treats that mix in such unique ingredients as ginger, plums, walnuts and blueberries. Popular daily sandwich specials include selections with brie and sauteed mushrooms, while soups, salads and Austrian coffee complement meals.
