ACTIVE FITNESS has been the best part of my LA experience since I moved from North Carolina. Everything from the equipment to the members to the staff is the best that I have witness with my own eyes. I am no gym guy, (and am much more at home on a golf course) but this place has changed my life. I have gotten in better shape, and have found friends and good energy every time that I walk in the doors. AF has changed the way that I think about gyms, and am looking forward to many more great workouts! And this place is CLEAN!!!
Pros: Cleanliness, Trainers, Equipment, Price, Month-to-month contracts
Cons: none

I used to train at Equinox in Santa Monica-- one day I went into Active Fitness with a trainer friend of mine with no plans or thoughts of leaving my current gym. I had the best workout I had ever had at any gym anywhere and I've belonged to about six and I've worked out at almost every gym in Santa Monica. Within the next week my wife and I dropped our Equinox memberships and joined Active Fitness. The equipment at Active Fitness is exceptionally high quality-- there is no Santa Monica gym that compares. It is very clean. And, something really special about the gym is that everyone who works there is awesome and the members are all friendly. The owner, John Damon is a great guy who is at the gym everyday making sure everything is done right and the members are well taken are of. It just has great energy, which makes you want to work out there. The personal trainers have master's degrees and John Damon has been named trainer of the year by Shape magazine. There is also a boxing trainer who trained Hector Comacho (his Dad trained Mohammed Ali.) If I dreamed up the kind of gym I would have created I would have created Active Fitness. This place has become a wonderful part of my life and I don't know what I would do without it. This is the gym to join for sure!
Pros: equipment, people, value, energy, location
Cons: I've been going here for about two years and there are no negatives for me

In my opinion Active Fitness is the best gym around. It's new, fresh ,and hip but you don't have to be young or a body builder to feel at home there. This gym staffs some of the friendliest warmest people that I have ever come in contact with.Everyone truly does know your name! All the gym equipment is new and kept in pristine condition. There is no waiting to use the machines. You don't have to worry about being annoyed by the sound of dumbbells being dropped to the ground. They have a padded shock resistant gym floor. There is free underground parking. T.V's on each individual cardio machine. One free training session when you join the gym.Unlike some other gyms they will not try to force you to purchase more training sessions.Even if you don't use a trainer the staff is still willing to help if you have any questions. There are many many pros when it comes to Active Fitness but I think you should take the time and experience them for yourself!
Pros: Parking,equipment,staff,atmosphere
Cons: not yet!!

I never thought I would review a gym but this place ROCKS! The personal trainers and their attention (and patience) is fantastic!!! This gym is clean & state-of-the-art not to mention a lot of the members are very friendly. If you need a gym and a good workout this is THE place to go!

Initially I was intimidated by a feeling that this was about hardcore fitness, but this is a gym for anyone who just wants to get in shape. I used to go to Gold's Gym in Venice and had gotten used to old, dirty equipement and crowded conditions. Coming to John's gym was real eye-opener. It's loft-type space is clean and airy and the video and sound equipement is superb. The treadmills are state of the art with individual tv's if you are inclined that way and you can run and zone out. But the best the gym has to offer is the staff, specifically the owner John and a miracle worker: Rene Abreu (he stabilzed an old knee injury and fixed my shoulder pain in less than a week--and this after years of work!). Try it out for a week and it becomes like "Cheers" (everybody knows your name) and you sense a genuine interest in your well-being and progress from the ever-postive John. I especially like that membership dues are on a monthly basis which more than makes up for the additional cost. And like all things, you get what you pay for. If you don't show up for a couple of months, you get a friendly reminder from John that your paying for a service your not using (not as a hard sell, but b/c he has a genuine interest in his clients)--motivates one to get back!! Lockers have been installed and showers are coming. No classes, but after Gold's, I'm realizing that's a plus: I can get a better workout on an hour on the machines than an hour in a class.
Pros: clean, open, great music/sound system, INCREDIBLE STAFF
Cons: NONE

I joined AF in January and I am hooked!! It is a beautiful, clean atmosphere. It is has an easy to manuver set up of all the equipment. It has popular music videos playing at all times, which can be great entertainmet. The staff are very friendly & motivating. I am an early bird, so I love that when I get to the gym at 6 am I am able to have a thorough workout without alot of commotion. It is my favorite place to be all week long!!
Pros: great music. state of the art equipment. motivating staff.
Cons: none

so i had to check this place out. I have been complaining about being new to LA and not having my favorite things from back home like my gym, doctor, and hairdresser. Well im 2 down 1 to go. i was reffered to Active fitness by my new super hot!!! hairdresser Chase from Chase salon. When he said he goes there I had to check it out cause i new he would know where to go. . I just checked it out and it is great very very clean the staff is super friendly and very simple and to the point. I feel like i can go there and get the job done and not have to feel like im going to a fashion show when im getting ready to wokout. although the staff member that helped me seemed a little in experienced i will still join when i go back to talk to john the owner. if you want to get in shape for those bikinis this summer i highly reccommend active fitness!

I want to start by saying that Active Fitness is the cleanest gym I've been to. The place looks great, its exceptionally neat, and all the equipment is smooth and works well. The employees are friendly and always smiling. As a matter of fact, the personal trainers and the Owner John Damon have been very helpful and caring and helped me with various fitness questions about losing my fat rolls. The main thing I like is the atmosphere though, the ceilings are nice and high and there is plenty of room to stretch, jump rope or whatever I feel like doing. I can go about my own business and get a great workout in without any interruptions. I have never waited for a machine or piece of cardio equipment, even during peak hours and it almost feels as it's my own stuff I'm using when I workout. I like to get in and out when I have my workouts and this is the perfect place to do so, I park literally 5 feet away from the back door entrance. My previous gym was 24hr fitness on Ocean Park and 31st -- I didn't like it at all. Check the gym out. Its worth it. Just my 2 cents.
Pros: Clean, Great Trainers, High Ceilings
Cons: None!

When I workout I like to work up a sweat, take a shower and feel refreshed. While visiting Santa Monica from Dallas, I tried Active Fitness but was suprised that no one told me about the lack of locker rooms to take a shower. I should have left my cloths at the hotel and planned an extra 30 minutes to go back to get ready. Oh yeah, if you're looking to take a class look elsewhere. It's not that they're bad, Active Fitness does not offer any.
Cons: no showers, no classes

Active Fitness is everything that most gyms are not: - Clean!, - Brimming with brand new, high-end strength training & cardio equipment, - Staffed by probably the most courteous, encouraging, competent & professionally-trained and certified fitness staff, - Uncrowded (at least for the time being!), and - Oriented toward personalized fitness evaluation, training, & results! After moving here from Illinois this past year, and having previously been a member of an excellent gym in the Chicagoland area, I was concerned about finding a reasonably priced, boutique-style gym in an area that seems to be all about mass-produced 'mega-gyms' & high-priced 'trendy gyms'. John and his staff built this gym from the ground up with people like you and I in mind. They didn't cut any corners when it came to gym design, upkeep, or staff recruitment & training. Whether your a serious, dedicated athlete--training for the your next competition--or, the more casual, 'stop in before or after work' type, Active Fitness deserves a strong look. John and his team will give you the attention and tools that you need to achieve whatever fitness goals you may have set for yourself. And, if you're interested, the Active Fitness staff will help you come up with fitness goals that are most appropriate for you and your lifestyle. Most of us have been in and out of dozens of gyms over the years. Some gyms are just a place to go in and crank out a workout a few mornings or nights a week, while other gyms truly get us motivated and enthusiastic about making the time in our lives to do something positive for our minds and bodies. If you give Active Fitness a try, I think you'll better understand why John has such a loyal and committed following at his Lincoln Ave. gym--committed members that feel fortunate to have found such a class-act operation amidst a myriad of 'cookie-cutter' gyms around the area.
Pros: The staff, the attitude, and the environment--everything you should expect in a boutique gym
Cons: I can't take it with me when I travel!
