EXTREMELY disappointed.... OUT RIGHT PATHETIC

by mk008

Wow, I can't say enough about this place. Let's start with the positive (I believe in that) the bartender was cool and the martini was good. He was very cool with us.

Servers at the table had a bit of an attitude when I questioned why they DID NOT HAVE ANY MENUS. That's right folks... NOT EVEN A PIECE OF PAPER NOR WRITTEN ON A NAPKIN. Their excuse, new chef and determining the menu.

They said they pretty much have whatever we ask for. So I ask if they have roasted chicken. NO, no roasted chicken. Ok so we are really contemplating whether to stay or what to do. We were going to a concert at the Wiltern.

We had read reviews about The Opus and they were NOT good but we felt we wanted to go with an open mind and decide for ourselves.

So after contemplating, I asked for something simple, grilled chicken, mash potatoes and veggies. UH... I am NO chef but Denny's would have been better. Seriously, not even being sarcastic here.

My friend, he got something off the "Happy Hour" menu (yes they did have a menu for Happy Hour) . He ordered a "BLAT". For those that are not hip (lol), Bacon, Lettuce, Avocado & Tomato". I'm saying, please. Are you serious! That was pathetic! How do you ruin that? Seriously, a child could have done this. And again, I'm seriously thinking Denny's would have done a better job.

My friend thought it was a cook and the NEW chef hadn't arrived yet (we were there 5:30 pm). I heard from our waitress their new chef was preparing the food. After being a bit surprised and literally almost in disbelief, I told our waitress (with lots of love) "If that is your new chef as Donald Trump would say, "you're fired". I mean really. If this was Denny's, we would have been fine and actually probably the BLAT would have been a better sandwich.

Then the final kicker... their "happy hour" menu shows $5.00 for Happy Hour. That is shown to the left column of their Happy Hour Menu. You know for easy eye and advertising purposes.

So on the first line in the center top of the small page, "Hours 5 - 8:00 pm " (hot happy hour but just hours)

on the second line "$8.50 Non- happy hour"

My friend was confused and I told him Happy hour is between 5-8 and everything is $5.00. And after 8:00 pm, it's $8.50. I'm thinking, simple and case closed.

We get the bill for the pathetic BLAT and another appetizer and we get charged $8.50 each. Of course, my friend is saying, see, I told you it's $8.50.

Inquring minds want to know. We had a waiter and a watiress so I asked our friendly (NOT) waiter, what the Happy Hour menu says. He proceeds to tell me happy hour is between 5-8 pm and it's $8.50 each appetizer for NON happy hour time and when there is a concert. Again, we are there 5:30 and it's probably almost 6:00 by now

UH..... NO, I don't think so. I asked him politley where does it state this on the menu. And he tells me our waitress was suppose to tell us.

Well I'm thinking weren't you one of the ones serving us. And he says it is posted in the front of the restaurant. My friend checked the front and there is NO SIGN!!!

Without hesitation (obviously they have had this issues MORE times than he will ever admit to me) he grabbed the bill and he came back with the correction and charged the happy hour prices.

So this leaves the long lasting taste of "let's see if these people are stupid enough to notice and let's rip them off... Oh shoot, WE got caught",

And to top it off, the table to the left of us was NOT happy either (they wanted to walk out) nor was the table to our right happy either.

So you decide if you want to go there. And if you do, I hope it's a better experience than we had.

  • Pros: next to the Wiltern Theatre

Great food and LA scene

by HopeNotDope

For my fellow foodies in LA I would definitely recommend this place!

Yes there will be the unavoidable LA scenester feeling, but I like to just sit back enjoy my meal while people watching, I find it to somewhat entertaining!

The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful when offering recommendations. I usually follow their judgment (mostly to see if they know anything about the food/drinks they serve) obviously Opus trains their staff very well!

My server recommended I have this fish dish, that was one of the specials as well as a TY KU martini….Both offerings were superb! Thankfully my server knows something about drink pairing because the martini was the perfect compliment!

I will definitely be back again!

awful

by jjenred5

I went here for lunch with a friend today. They were out of one of the drinks on the menu, and 20 minutes in to making our order also let us know they were out of the salad I ordered. The food that did finally come was cold, overcooked and just plain nasty. The service was terrible and there were only four other tables that had people at them. No one was rude but everyone seems to be completely horrible at their jobs. I have no idea how they stay in business.

This is the worst place I've been to in ages. And the only place I've not tipped at in years.

  • Pros: neat furniture?
  • Cons: crappy food, awful service, menu was wrong

Avoid!!!

by ritobandito

the only thing consistent about this place is the horrible service and the lack of real managment. The ever changing menu, lack of focus and overpriced food makes this place a real loser!!!! save your money and eat at the neighboring denny's at least you know what your getting. Tonight and most nights i have gone to this place i waited for at least 45 min only to be dissapointed. The bartenders show no inrest in good service and you practicaly need to shoot a flare gun to get their attention. This would be undestanable if it were a busy place but there have been times when I am the only person there and wait 10 minutes for a menu. Overall if I could rate this place with a 0 I would.

  • Pros: nothing
  • Cons: service, consistency, decor, atmosphere

What are the odds of getting 7 orders wrong ?

by cheekygirl

We attended this estabilshment for a lunch christmas celebration, and had reserved and pre-ordered. All the orders were wrong, and needed to be returned e.g. steak instead of kobe burger (!). They ran out of panini bread for the paninis and gave us whole wheat instead, without explanation. Service was surly, water was never refilled, drink orders were never taken, and when we complained, the manager/owner was indifferent and had to be heavily pushed to give a discount. The place has some ambience (but is quite cold), however, do not reward poor service by dining here. Even Taylor's steakhouse has got to be better than this place.

Not Recommended until New Ownership, and it's going to happen!

by YooYong

I'm a local doctor for the korean community and I'm been going to this place for very long time. I was working in Korea for couple of years and just got back to my office in US. What happened to Opus? The food is not consistent, the service is rude and the manager doesn't care. What kind of manager is that who doesn't care about his customers? I ask for a burger that clearly says in the menu that comes with grilled onions and I had to send it back and still didn't come with..What??? I was sitting in the bad and had to wait almost 10 minutes to get a drink...Whatt?...And there was a nice guy sitting next to me watching the football who I found out later that he was the manager..What?? Is that a restaurant or a Circus? I had fun afterwards, I guess!! Over priced.

Rude management, Rude service.

by CarlClairborney

I have to vent. Tonight, my friend, her son, my mom, my sister and her 3 kids, all joined myself and my wife to Opus restaurant. Count us, there are nine of us!!!! Nine people and the waitress sits us at a table for six!!! We are trying to crowd in and make this work, but you can imagine how crowded it must have been. Well, I politely, let me stress that, POLITELY, asked the waitress if they could add another table or something since it was very crowded (and yes, the restaurant was crowded anyway --- it is Friday night afterall). A waiter came over and told us that he could move us to another room for a larger table so we could be more comfortable. We all stood up to move and I asked if we needed to bring bread, silverware, etc. At this time another waiter (not involved in our service at all) turned to our waitress and said, "I feel for you having to deal with the B.......ch tonight." As you can imagine, I, along with my party, was very shocked at this behavior and it was made a little worse since the waiter turned to the butting in waitress and said that she should not talk like that in front of customers.

So, we moved to our new table and asked to speak to the manager. He came over, we explained what happened and that we did not appreciate the manner that he spoke about me. The manager then very rudely tried to explain the behavior away telling us that the waitress was not addressing our party at all. We disagreed and then he very RUDELY said, "If I went to a restaurant and I didn't like the service, then I would leave and go somewhere else." So we did!!!

Bad Vibe, Can't recommend this place to good people. They don't seem to care about anyone but the money.

  • Pros: Couldn't tell in time
  • Cons: Service, Management.

More than I expected

by Iankmp

I went with a guest for dinner and did not know what I was walking into.

Decor: Outstanding with modern elegance. The main dining area was very comfortable and inviting for my guest and I. There were also quite a few stylish sections for much larger groups.

Menu: Adaptive with meals ranging from starting around 12 and on up to the $$$ range. I chose the shrimp linguini and was very surprised to say the least. My guest chose the oven roasted organic chicken and seemed to have the same reaction. We shared a little with each other agued which tasted better. I was partial to mine.

Drinks: The list is long enough to get whatever it is that you fancy. I stayed with Guinness which seemed priced well for a restaurant.

Staff: Seemed genuinely friendly and punctual with our needs. No complaints.

Overall: I was very happy to find this place because it felt great to be there, the food tasted wonderful, and it was better than I expected for the price. I was very happy that their menu offered some $$ options among the $$$$. It raised the bar for my dining picks.

Inconsistent Food. Good Service. Bad management.

by rebertbinn53

I've been going to this restaurant once in a while for about 2 years, since my office is just one block from it. Last time and last, I saw the worst of it. It's very disappointing that such a beautiful restaurant turned into that. The foods is not consistent anymore. The service is descent, although they always seem to be trying to save money with their staff, by not having enough people to work. The two bar servers seemed to be very stressed, running out the bar to take care of tables, no kidding, and on top of that, trying to keep their cool with customers at the bar. How could they? They have a young man who seem to be a floor manager, apparently very unexperienced, rude and very unhelpful. I honestly feel bad for them, and I hope they'll get things together. The economy is difficult this days and believe me, they'll go down if they keep going in that direction. Uncomfortable time, Unpleasant vibe. I wouldn't recommend to anyone I know.

Best Burger Ever! Great Service! Nice Deco...

by JessicaJ3

Loved the experience. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much by the way it looks from the outside. My friends and I just wanted to get something to eat and drink before catching a show at the Wiltern. The bar was packed and we were offered to sit in the lounge. One girl was training but she was making sure we were happy every time she walked by us, as well as the other guy server, who apparently was training her, super friendly too. Our food came fast and it was delicious, probably the best burger I ever had in town, made with kobe beef. We saw the guy going to get our drinks at the bar and he didn't even ask the bartenders. He had the skills too :). and we got them right the way. Excellent service, amazing food. Please check it out.

  • Pros: Excellent service
  • Cons: Food was too good! :)
