Top Notch. Better than Katsuya

by mrsmari

I. love.this.place

Fine Dining Sushi. If you dont like fine dining then Yuta is not for you.

Best dishes: seared Kobe beef, Ahi sushi, sampler (monkfish foie gras), halibut, apple jack

The one thing I love about this place is how delicious every piece of food is. Where else can you get Kobe in the Valley? Their fish is so delicate and melts in your mouth. Yuta specializes in sauces to compliment different sushi. Their menu reminds me of Nobu and the quality is as good or better. No tap water here. Fiji is the standard and there is no extra charge for it.

Its hard to find but very romantic. Its across from Marshalls on Ventura. We stumbled upon it 3 months ago and I have been there 4 times. It is not cheap, but you do get what you pay for....every piece of sushi is like a work of art. And I simply cannot say that about any restaurant in LA. If you want more portions, head to Sushi Mac or Teru. This place is not for the casual sushi fan. If you like finer sushi then this is the place.

They will not rush you out, like Katsuya. Their staff is very friendly. Last week, they had Puccini playing which only enhanced our experience. Yuta is a very special place that more of LA needs to discover.

  • Pros: Delicious sushi. How often can you call sushi delicious?

The Japanese authentic sushi restaurant is probably the perfect way to say about "Yuta". I love the unique style of sushi which prepared them. The server was the greatest, he was so kind and considerate in every way you can of. I am going back there soon! Mark my word. It is a fantastic restaurant.

Authentic, artisanal Japanese gem

by chiyowhite

I?ve been to Yuta numerous times, mainly to rekindle my experience with the authentic Japanese food and cozy ambiance hat I?ve experienced before in Japan. With a small restaurant, small staff and personal service, this is exactly what I was looking for.

The sushi menu is small, but well-selected. Every piece of fish is excellent and well thought-out. They polish their own brown rice, which provides an excellent initial ?crunch? and a great nutty aftertaste, but leaves the middle a little soft. Still, better than 85% of the rice out there. The size is perfect ? one bite for the whole piece, nothing more and nothing less. In my opinion, each piece of sushi is a piece of art that requires its own composition. More is not necessarily better.

Where Yuta excels is with their appetizers and entrees. Never have I tasted more refined, authentic flavors. It?s not over-flavored and over-hyped. The taste is authentic and organic, but also complex and multi-faceted. All of their sauces are home-made. The more you eat, the more you enjoy, and it gets better with every bite. Unfortunately, this is the antithesis of most LA restaurants, which is a pity, because I believe every meal should be judged as a whole, instead of by a single bite.

If you enjoy Jinpachi, Urasawa, Asanebo and some of the other authentic sushi places in town, then I?d definitely recommend you give Yuta a shot. It?s both authentic in terms of sushi, but also good in terms of their fusion cooked dishes -- give Yuta a try, you won?t be disappointed. But if you?re looking for creative sushi rolls, tempura and bold-flavored sashimi, then this probably isn't the place for you.

Yuck!

by mikeladd29

This is one of the strangest sushi places around. There is NO parking unless you search around for street parking or illegally park across the street. Once inside the "hostess" is also the waitress, so it may take a while to be seated. There is no music playing and the ambience is awkward. The sushi was so tiny and not very good at all, it actually smelled like dog feces! We were never asked if we wanted to order drinks and the soy sauce is brought to you already in the saucer. They said they didn't actually have soy sauce bottles! I've never heard of such a thing! Anyway, beware, just because it's expensive doesn't mean you are getting good food. The miso soup (with tofu) was brought in a mug and the tofu was runny and you almost thought you were eating egg drop soup. Odd. Stay away. There are hundreds of other and BETTER sushi places on that street!

  • Pros: The place mats and cool chop stick holder.
  • Cons: Everything else: Food, Soup, Service, Ambience, etc.

Not worth the money

by rae92583

I stopped by Yuta wondering what had replaced the previous excellent restaurant, Vineyard Terrace, but was not impressed with the small portions and high prices. The host almost did not seat our party of 2 as I guess they were waiting for a big influx of people at 8:00 on Friday, but the restaurant was never even close to completely full during our dinner. We order a few appetizers to share and each tried a few pieces of sushi. The waiter had informed us that the pieces of sushi were quite large, but we found that to be untrue as the one piece that comes in an order is smaller than most other sushi restaurants I frequent. It wasn't that the food wasn't tasty, it was, just for the money you could go down the street to Katsu-ya and eat even more delicious food and more of it, for the same price. Yuta's version of the crispy rice with spicy tuna didn't even come close to Katsu-ya's.

  • Pros: Ambience
  • Cons: No parking, high prices, slow service

impeccable!

by debradesigner

wonderful ambience, varied and electable menu, and the chef is at the top of his game. moderately-pricey, but worth it. you'll be telling everyone you know, I promise.

  • Pros: the chef is amazing and the staff are first-rate
  • Cons: the wait for our table was a little longer than expected, but that's a small detail

Named after its quiet but accomodating chef/owner, artfully presented Kappo-style Japanese fare is served amid warming surroundings and neighborhood crowd.

by Tara Lis

In Short
Nestled comfortably in the short-lived home of the former Vineyard Terrace wine bar, this cozy Japanese eatery operates quietly under the helm of head chef and owner Yuta, formerly of Brentwood's Takao. An homage to fresh fish, the sushi is just as vibrant looking as the gloss on the handful of wooden tables and small wraparound bar. Unique items, bearing part European influence and part slow food movement, include carpaccio-style sashimi dishes and homemade silken tofu.
