Nice room, wrong music.

by mike3333

Chloe is a pretty and pleasant room, formerly Voda, that has an ambience of both sophistication and decadence. It's a small lounge and restaurant, although the restaurant idea is a bit puzzling--the room isn't really set up for it and I think many patrons don' t even realize there's a menu. It's a place you go to have a cocktail with a pretty (or handsome) date, either before stepping it up a notch to go party somewhere more intensely or before sealing the deal to get said date into bed. The bartenders are friendly and polite, and the crowd is a nice mix of characters of varying ages who like to drink--and even get drunk--but try to keep it civilized.

The negatives: Until recently, mixed drinks were served in ridiculously small glasses at embarassingly high prices. A Tom Cruise-sized gin and tonic for, say, 12 bucks. Sorry, but even in good economic times, which these aren't, nobody likes a rip off. More recently the glasses got bigger and the price was $9--hopefully that's here to stay.

The music is the biggest problem. At a corner of the bar sits a woman with a Mac, intensely pressing buttons and making adjustments as if she's working on the Manhattan project. But what comes out of the speakers is the most horribly random, inappropriate for the room music I've heard in a long time. Lots of classic Zeppelin, metalish rock and oddly smashed together tunes that don' t belong together and certainly don't belong in this bar. It's like a jukebox in a blue-collar bar, where soused patrons are randomly hitting buttons for songs that have been collecting dust for decades. Also, for the size of the place, the volume could be lowered about 10% and nobody would mind.

Sorry if she's somebody's girlfriend or sister, but music ain't her forte. Somebody needs to buy this place an iPod, load it up with more modern, and yes, some "loungey" tunes, and press shuffle. The bar and its customers would both be better off.

Relaxed vibe for a weekday drink

by nicachica17

Good cocktail list...didn't catch the food menu. The bartender on wednesday nights, Blake, is attentive and drop dead gorgeous. Great escape from the horrid bars on the promenade!

  • Pros: Ambience, cheap parking in nearby structures, attentive service (wed. eve)
  • Cons: normal steep prices for Santa Monica ($15 a cocktail)

Downhill Quick

by MedicalBob

I used to love this bar when it first opened. They had DJ's and a great crowd of young professionals. The menu was simple, but my friends and I never went for the food. The fun we had was all because of the spunky bartender, Jen. One of the few LA bartenders I've ever come across with a true personality that kept us all coming back for more. When we went in last night, I encountered a rude, unwelcoming attitude from the door man, then had less than appetizing rice patties and cold fries that we suffered through, and to bring it all to a halt, I found out that Jen doesn't even work there anymore!! I don't think I'll go back, I believe it was a poor business decision to let her get away, and for those prices I'd rather go to the Penthouse or Viceroy.

Rude Bouncer

by jkeen2

I've been coming to this bar for many years when it was Voda. Never when it was Voda did I experience the rudeness of the bouncer since it changed to Chloe. On a slow Friday night, my attorney friends and I decide to go to Chloe after having a great time down the street at the Bodega Bar. The bouncer would not let us in even though we had a group of several attractive women and two guys. Some friends of mine happened to get there earlier and said it was not even busy inside. We questioned him and he said there's nothing we could do and told us to go to another bar in Santa Monica which we did. We spent a lot of money there. If there is one place in Santa Monica to never go to, it is Chloe. Not worth the hassle. I'm sure it will be some other bar anyway in a few months. Don't go to Chloe period!

Chloe's Rude Bartender

by dressage4u

I've been coming to this place for the past 5 years or so when it was Voda...loved it! Now it's Chloe and overall the vibe is good as are most of the staff and the doorman is always cool.

However, they have recently added several women bartenters and one is a rude, mean biatch and has NO understanding of customer service what so ever!! She has long brown hair and bangs, only semi attractive and so jealous of every attractive woman in the bar!!

I actually stood for 10 minutes friday night while she helped every single man around me and still would not get my round of drinks!! Finally another female bartender helped me and she and the barback apologized. What a total loser, biatch!! I'm 38, 5'8" 117#, blonde and ex signed LA Models runway and print, she would NOt help me or my other attractive women friends...what's with that??

They need to hire and train a better staff like Voda had! The guy during the week is great!

  • Pros: Love the vibe and small size
  • Cons: RUDE snotty Bartender

Reminiscent of a classic Parisian saloon but with the casual atmosphere of beachy Santa Monica, this signless bar is just steps away from the tourist-laden Promenade scene.

by Alexandra Bornhoft

In Short
With an unmarked entrance that blends in with Second Street's pedestrian stretch, this unexpected spot might appear like some exclusive word-of-mouth club. But it's come one, come all behind the towering front door. Softly-lit French chandeliers, antique mirrors, tiger print chaises, burgundy couches and a classic rock soundtrack keep things posh and easy. As for the crowd, think of it as scenester-lite: Dressed-down dudes, stylishly casual girls and even a few local beach bums gather by the smooth marble bar sipping reinvented vintage drinks. Those with more than just a liquid appetite can choose from the small menu, which has standbys like mixed olives, ahi tuna tartare, creamy rice balls and petite burgers smothered in English cheddar and caramelized onions.
