Great Korean food in LA
by TFregasen at Citysearch
Dong il Jang is one of the best Korean food restaurants in LA. Don't believe what "Korean Food Critic" wrote. obvious if he didn't like it, he wouldn't have not gone so many times. The staff may seem "rude" but you have to remember this place is VERY busy. The waitress are supposed to put the food on the plate to start you out and then you must cook it yourself, that is the way most Korean BBQ places are. My wife and I have been going to this restaurant for 7 years at lease once a month, and you do get a waitress every now and them seem rude, but they are not really doing it to be nasty, they just have lots of customers to deal with like the RUDE "Korean Food Critic" person. Disregard his review and believe the others, you love it!!
Terrific Korean in LA

What a great place! Terrific meals! You cook the meal yourself at the table and it's always very tasty. Monitored parking lot beside and behind. Highly recommended!
Best Ross Gui
by martinikitty13 at Citysearch
I've been going here for years - the food has consistently been fabulous - particularly the Ross Gui (thinly sliced beef which you bbq; then for the finale, they make you kimchee fried rice from the leftover beef - it's like 2 meals in one and utterly delicious)! The seafood pancakes here are also superb. Unlike some places in Ktown, they have a pretty decent sized parking lot (side and back) so parking is usually easy. Not all the waitresses speak english, but it hasn't been problematic.
- Pros: Best Ross Gui; Fabulous Food; Parking is Easy
- Cons: No ambience
Good stuff!

This place has been around since the 1940s and obviously has incredible staying power. The food is great! Sounds like some people are complaining about lack of service, but to be honest, don't go to a Korean restaurant in K-Town expecting great service. Sometimes the Asian version of customer service isn't the same as American standards. Just go, expect to have to call the waiter/waitress a few times to get things, and enjoy the food!
- Pros: Food, Parking
- Cons: Somewhat smoky air
Service With An Attitude
by korean_food_critic at Citysearch
I have been to Dong Il Jang several times. Each time, there was always some waitress who seemed angry & gave us attitude. I also don't like the fact that the waitresses routinely impose on customers to help the waitresses put the food on the table. This is not why I go out to restaurants - to deal with attitude & help them put the food on the table. The food is of acceptable quality but the service needs much improvement. The owner should really hire happier, friendlier and service-oriented people to serve the food. Until then, I plan to avoid this place altogether if I can help it.
A great restaurant, don't miss this one!

If you're in LA don't miss a chance to go to this restaurant. The service is beyond what I have experienced in other fine restaurants and their food is absolutely wonderful. Dollar for dollar you get what you pay for or even more. I can't say enough about this restaurant. Enough! Bon apetite!
- Pros: Service, Ambiance, Food
- Cons: Maybe the price...
A gem
by takshe at Citysearch
Very unique and private. Simple and American-friendly Korean eats. The waitresses are the best part in tiny brown uniforms. The BBQ is good, but not quite as good as the noodle dishes. Never tried the sushi.
- Pros: cool atmosphere, great service, unique
- Cons: bit pricey
Best Korean Food
by javierml at Citysearch
The palce is not that fancy, but the food is the best Korean food in town. We have been going there at lest once a week for the last eight years and they always have the same consistent high quality of food. Great experience!
- Pros: food, consistency, authentic
- Cons: ambience
Great FOod
by daddyjws at Citysearch
Was told about Dong Il Jang by a friend, a fellow anglo, and they were right. The food is fantastic and the menu and staff are used to the uninformed Anglo I think. The waitress lit our barbecue and continued to adjust the flame throughout our meal (I'm still not sure if I was supposed to do that). Anyway, the bulgogi was terrific, the Kim Chi was the best I've had in the city. The Korean pancakes were above average. Great experience...will definately go back.
- Pros: Great KimChi, Bulgogi, Great Bul Gogi, Good Parking lot
Korean BBQ
by andyflowers at Citysearch
This was my first experience with Korean BBQ, and it certainly won't be my last. The food was delicious, particularly the beef and pork. They also have delicious Sushi, if you are so inclined. This place is very authentic and most of the clientele is Korean. Service is also very good, despite my inability to speak Korean.
- Pros: Great food, Good service, Clean
- Cons: A bit pricey
