Service???

by emphrank at Citysearch

I can cook. I don't go out to eat necessarily to be wowed by the unattainable at home. I go out to eat for the convenience, for the variety of flavors that I may not have in my cupboards at the moment and most importantly for the service. I have also worked in the restaurant business for over 7 years, so I understand service as well. So to be able to relax after hard day's work and have someone else do the cooking, cleaning and serving is pretty nice.

Last night I (caucasian) dined at Soot Boll Jeep with my girlfriend (african american) and her brother, sister and mother. We had some of the worst service I have ever experienced.

(this is to all restaurants, but especially to Soot Boll Jeep)

1. Don't be race-ist. Soot Boll Jeep's servers were completely rude and were too busy stocking their beer fridge for the end of the night duties to check if we wanted to order (15 minutes). I had to confront the server at the fridge to bring her to the table.

2. If you say you're open to 11, then let me walk in the door anytime up until 11 and SERVE ME! Don't make me feel uncomfortable because you want to be in bed by 11. If that's the case, say you're open until 9.

Don't drop off my meat and start cooking it before bringing our drinks and our banchan. And don't drop my check off while I'm eating, unless you are friendly about it.

3. Expect a bad tip (a really bad one) if your service stinks with no apologies. If that's your style of service, that's my style of tipping. Hey, I could left nothing for a tip (Tipping is not the custom in South Korea and it is almost never expected - WIKIPEDIA) and probably should have.

4. If you say you take credit cards, don't ask me for cash instead. It's tacky. Plus it makes it obvious that you want to hide your revenues from the government.

  • Pros: nothing
  • Cons: service was absolutely terrible - some of the worst I've received

First of all, if you like a relaxing meal, then perhaps Korean BBQ isn't for you, after all you have to cook it yourself.

Second, you say you're in the restaurant business? Shouldn't you know that most places get a little ticked off when you show up just before closing?

As a regular Soot Bull Jeepy, I implore you to try this place again, at a reasonable hour. Perhaps you'll change your mind.

No reason to complain ...

by notgab at Citysearch

Last night I came here with several friends to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and I cannot see how anyone could find reason to complain. The food here is so delicious, and it is completely perfect for a group of friends as an interactive way to hang out. It is relatively impossible to ruin the food; although we got distracted by side conversations and would leave the meat cooking on the grill for far too long, the flavor was still so incredible that the fact that none of us knew beans about cooking couldn't ruin it. We ordered a little bit of everything and you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu: though as a warning, squid is the one thing you do not want to leave cooking for too long (as after a few minutes it will turn rubbery).

  • Pros: Otherwordly flavor

Anyone who hates this place is dumb.

by Fatrick at Citysearch

This place is great. Anyone I've ever known that knows anything about food in LA mentions this in their top ten.

  • Pros: Best Korean BBQ in Los Angeles, hands down.
  • Cons: None, unless you're a douche or a princess.

BE WARNED....STAY CLEAR!!

by luvlee2 at Citysearch

BE WARNED!........when you see many reviews......it IS because the negative is true......I just came back from one of the worst places I have ever had KB..(this place!!).and we go often. The service is terrible......they just put the food down and you have to call them back to ask anything......we could never get a refill for our water. (we ordered Korean wine) wanted more......couldn't get the waitress (who had an attitude) to come to the table. The barbeque pit was spitting sparks........it burned my arm. The food (compared to other places) was sparse. The floors and chairs were dirty...(It was filthy)..I had to take a napkin and clean my chair. This place made my skin crawl.......We expected crawly things to appear any minute....... They have a B rating........I wouldn't use the restroom there. Needless to say, we will not be visiting this establishment again!!....Stay Clear!!

  • Cons: They have the worst service........couldn't get a waitress to the table after the food arrived!

pardon?!?

by akse at Citysearch

did you say "none of real korean people don't go here?" grammar aside, who, then, are all the korean people i see eating there every time i go? are they actors? robots? seriously, friend, give me a break. this place is the real deal and no amount of nay-saying or backlash can change that. the meat is excellent, the vibe is dead-on (and, therefore, not swanky by any means) and the beer is cold. want swank? go to chosun galbi or tahoe galbi or even yissi hwaro (which is also durned good). but if you want terrific, charcoal-grilled meat--and the best eel and mino i've had in the city--this is your spot.

Smoke gets in your eyes: Faithful diners swoon over spicy Korean barbecue served in dark, smoke-filled rooms at this K-Town favorite.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
On a Koreatown sidewalk, crowds wait for a seat in this dim, no-frills barbecue joint. Tables fitted with charcoal-fueled fire pits fill each room. Service is efficient--but the staff speaks little English, so the uninitiated might feel like they are traveling internationally without a guidebook.

The Food
This smoky spot offers remarkable barbecue. Order from a choice of meats--including beef, chicken and pork--which arrive at the table raw, ready for diners to throw onto the smoldering grill. Most cuts are marinated to perfection in sesame oil, garlic, sugar and Korean red peppers. Short ribs come on the bone or thinly sliced in achingly tender cuts. Spencer steak, chicken breast and shrimp are equally good, spiced hot with slow-burning piquancy. Served with ultra-spicy kimchi, slivered daikon and pepper-tinged green salad, the meal will sear your taste buds.

Great Food. Great Price. Zero atmosphere.

by edcalifornia at Citysearch

This is the best Korean BBQ I've had. Stick to the #1,2, or 3. They're the most popular for a reason. The place has no atmosphere. It's like a Waffle House with a smoker in the middle of it. But what you don't pay for in decor you get back in quantity and quality of the food.

They have parking but it always seems to be full, and it's a bit of a hike from the Westside but totally worth it. Went to a Koren BBQ place here in on the Westside and I got half the portion for twice the price. Great decor, and better service but you since you can't eat either I'd stick with this K-town suprise.

  • Pros: Great food. Very Good price.
  • Cons: Zero atmosphere. Location.

None of real Korean people don't go there and none of my Korean friends don't know about that place. Interesting.

Loved it

by daisyd at Citysearch

I read all the reviews. I loved it. More atmospheric than many KBBQ joints and with CHARCOAL for goodness sakes. Fabulous! I didn't think the prices were any better or worse than anywhere else and our server was extremely attentive. I love smoke and campfires and such so was unbothered by this. Folks who are travelers and adventurous eaters, willing to soak up the experience - go. Folks who worry about their hair or need a crispy clean experience - go elsewhere. Great time Soot B, I'll be back.

  • Pros: tasty, smoky, the real deal
  • Cons: limited parking

Charcoal Korean BBQ Rocks

by g33kgurli at Citysearch

Being a first timer to Korean BBQ; I wasn't sure that I'd like this place..but boy was I wrong. What this place lacks in decor it makes up for with the food.

We ordered short ribs (boneless), shrimp and marinated steak - all the meat was fresh, tasted great and had very little fat. The awesome bbq was served with kim chee, lettuce, soup, and assorted veggies - accompanied with yummy soy bean paste.

I liked the fact that the waitress pretty much left us alone to do our own cooking @ the table, as I've heard of some places where the waitress takes over - standing at your table the whole time. This place scores huge with me for a great lunch spot with co-workers, and would be equally good for a family dinner (minus small children) - I'm seriously impressed by the food - but want to redecorate the dining area.

Loved it - will be back soon!

  • Pros: Parking, Service, Food, Pricing
  • Cons: Ambience was a little lacking.
