Taix is History. A Horrible "dining" experience. Warning: Favoritism!

When the waiter realized that we would not be overspending, his entire demeanor changed. He ignored us. He never came by to ask if everything was OK. No refils. When new customers came beside us, he dotted on them. The partialism was obnoxious! There was a huge difference with the portions we received and what our neighbors received!!! I normally love Mom & Pop places and am an LA native. But the rude and stressful way the owner and server treated me has caused me to state to you - I will NEVER go there again. They made me feel like a criminal instead of an honored guest. We left a decent tip although they didn't deserve it. I would rather eat at home then be mistreated the way I was. If I was alone, I would have walked out. But I had guests & didn't want to cause a scene. I was uncomfortable for the meal. A shame & a waste. Food was very disappointing also. Maybe it is time for you to close down. Your attitude certainly wasn't right! Never! Jamais!

Charming, Great Service, Dont mind the decor!

I returned to Taix after a two year hiatus and was pleasantly suprized! They have changed a few menu items that made my night that much better!

For starters the salads, the Blue Cheese used to be the same ole iceberg/carrot mix as the house, now the Blue cheese is an iceberg wedge (classy and refreshing) and the house salad is a nice mix of greens with the dressing pre-applied. No veggies on the either but still great starters! I also loved the new soups, all are vegetarian (vegan in fact) except the clam chowder of course but even on fridays they have a veg option!

I dont need to go on and on about the food or service lets just say that the food came quickly and was freshly prepared, and the service was friendly but not overbearing!

if you hated it before, try it again, it has made its comeback and proved why it has been around for so long!

if your the la cookie cutter type-you wont appreciate the charm of this place

..was slightly skeptical after reading some of the negative comments of the decor and out-dated/grandma vibe. however after going, we realized those who wrote negative comments just dont get it. of course if your the typical every day la person who is into the mainstream..whats hot/whats not..everybody else is doin' it mentality- you probably wont appreciate the old school european charm this place has. the decor is not stale by any means..it just has character that may not mold to your pop culture cookie cutter taste. the food was very hearty but yet pretty incredible. our server bernard wasnt your typical 20 something aspiring actor but wasnt your next door neighbors grumpy grandpa either. he was very professional and charming with his cute french accent. the crowd was those who could appreciate the uniqueness this place held, so there was a very acclectic mix of age groups and types. drinks afterwards in the bar was a pleasant surprise as well with the bar being as charming and fun with the live bands that played. yet it still maintained its old european feel. this place has no cons in my book..i cant wait to go back.

Family Friendly Unpretentious French Country Food at it's Best

I've been going to Taix for years and am amazed at how it can do so many things so well. I have always received the same excellent service whether in Jeans or Tux and can't imagine how badly I would have to behave to upset the friendly staff. They serve real country style food that is an awesome value (same league as Elephant Bar for quality and bargain $$). This isn't nouveaux cuisine and doesn't pretend to be. The tureen of soup is made fresh daily and is always great whether split-pea, vegetable or cream based. The "old-school" salad is just that; it's good, authentic and doesn't include anything that wasn't used in salads in 1940, not sure why this troubled some reviewers. Everything on the menu is delicious though my favorites are the trout and roast pork. I've taken the daughter and her softball team to the lounge for after game snacks/sandwiches and to see the eclectic bands that play on the small stage in the back. Taix is a not-to-be missed LA classic whether you are treating you grandmother from from Omaha or just want a good meal yourself.

Make No Mistake - Taix is a Classic!

When you're tired of trendy, overpriced, overrated Fusion restaurants, go to Taix for a touch of class and for real French food. Taix is consistently delicious, friendly and a great value. The wine list is wonderful - something great on it for every taste and budget. The food is consistently top-notch. If you love escargot, you'll love the hot garlicky ones at Taix. The soups are amazing -- I thought the onion soup was out of this world but my friend made me try her clam chowder -- as good as any I had growing up in the Northeast. Meat dishes and fish dishes are both outstanding. Amazing mousse au chocolat is a decadent conclusion to every meal. Service is always friendly and the waiters always suggest wonderful choices. It's great for special occasions but it's economical enough to go even when you don't have one. You can see why Taix is still full 8 decades after opening -- it's a classic!

Tres Chic

After my first time dining at Taix I had a very good experience. The food was delicious for the price and the desserts were killer. The wait staff was friendly and ultra accomodating for all needs, plus a lot of them have been working for a while and conversational french can be heard in the back. It is a much older atmosphere in the resturaunt, but the lounge area is pretty diverse, so no need to worry about feeling out of place. All in all Taix was pretty cool.

Entrees are reliable/great, place is kinda cheesy

Like others, I feel the soup and salad is completely negligible and doesn't set good expectations. The layout is spacious, although it won't matter if you have noisy kids in the room, but the decor is on the old-fashioned/cheesy side. NOT romantic at all, in case that's what you're looking for. The service was fine, and the entrees, though maybe not inspired or "hip" were absolutely delicious for everyone involved, and we ordered steak, pork, and fish. For the price, well worth it,and the valet parking is cheap (at least on sunday).

BOGUS

This restaurant is a perfect example of what's wrong with most "institutions" in Los Angeles. This place just sucked. Food was comparable to "wedding food." Soup was cream based garbage I could've easily gotten from any banquet hall. Salad equivalent to a McDonald's blend of iceberg and carrot shavings. Could've had a better and cheaper steak at Sizzler. Service was awful. Server was slammed and frazzled. An explanation would've been enough. Instead, we were treated to his cursing under his breath. We needed to flag bus boys in order to get any attention. Just because a place has been around for a long time and has a kitschy factor doesn't make it good. L.A. , while not being a great restaurant town, does have some good spots. Taix is far from it. Won't ever return. Do yourself a favor and skip it. You can do much better just about anywhere.

Excellent food and best value in Los Angeles.

I have been coming to Taix for 35 years. The restaurant has been in business for twice that long, which should tell you something. Food is always excellent and very large portions. Service is efficient. Prices are low by any measure. This is French provincial fare with emphasis on hearty flavors. For about $22 you receive: a thick soup (as much as you want), salad, large entree (with side dishes) and sorbet. Don't come here if you want the latest trend in fusion cuisine and decor at a restaurant that probably won't be around next year. Do come with a healthy appetite for good French food. By the way, every year on July 14 (Bastille Day), Taix rolls prices back to 1937 levels: roast chicken dinner for $1.26 (but beware: always a very long line for this).

hasn't changed, anything

this place is a great place to take your mom from the midwest if she has not gone out to eat in 20 years. The food is pretty good and the wine list is the same. The place has big booths and even though they should update the menu, I still love to go here. You get a lame relish dish, iceburg salad with house dressing or blue cheese for an upcharge (SO 70's!) and soup is served in a bowl and left on your table. This might sound like a slam...but to ME - these are good points. I have yet to have an entree that would impress any foodie but I personally love it because it reminds me of a place my grandparrents would take me to when I was 6 (and I'm almost 40). Service is ok. Lot's of party rooms and a great bar area to have a cheese plate that your suburban aunt would think was "fancy" with a nice french wine. A quirky and nice date place if you like old school charm.
