Awesome Menu

The service was awesome, and I like the BYOB policy.
The best part of this restaurant is the original menu. Its not your "traditional" Mexican fare and it really looks and tastes like they've got a chef that knows what's up.

I make it a point to eat here every time I'm in L.A. - and don't let the discovery that this unassuming little place is in a strip mall - this food is wonderful. If there's a wait - it's worth it. NOTE: A reviewer in February mistook this place for some place called Antonio and put her bad experience under Alegria's on Sunset's reveiw.
- Pros: The food!
- Cons: It's not a "romantic" wine and dine place.
The food is always fresh!

Alegria offers your typical Mexican fare except its extra fresh! I recommend their burrito and try one of their "waters." For the most part, the staff is friendly and willing to explain their take on familiar dishes. You're probably better off trying it out for lunch since its not as crowded. The parking lot is always full and there's little off street parking to speak of, since it competes with other local restaurants.

Best I've ever had, and usually filled with red snapper, mahi mahi, or salmon. Perfect amount of spiciness and always plenty of filling to complement the delicious black beans and vegan rice. Bring some beer if you're so inclined, because they're BYOB and they don't charge a fee. Really nice staff, too.

Alegria is still the same reliable source of hearty, fresh Mexican fare. Dining in the cozy restaurant is a pleasure, for sure. But take-out burritos have recently become my weekly treat. I just haven't come across a better burrito in Los Angeles. Take your pick: Alexis, Veggie or Chicken. They all burst at the seams and you can taste each one of the fresh ingredients in isolation. And yet, together, the ingredients form a delicious, coherent whole. They complement their take-outs with a generous bag of tortilla chips and a pot of salsa, which makes the whole package a wonderful sub-$10 meal for those evenings when you're too lazy or tired to cook.
not that great, even scary at times

My party went to Antonio's for lunch. The employees were late so they opened up about 30 minutes late. Though we were hungry, we waited to try this place, especially after the reviews I read. The service and food were just ok. Nothing special at all. The guac was just one step up from the flourescent green goop you get at a convenience store. The liquid they tried to pass off as a margarita was putrid! I have never tasted anything like it. The best thing about Antonio's is their 'history'. My friend's salad looked fresh. At least it wasn't expensive
THE best Mexican in LA

For having such a large Mexican population LA seems to be lacking in good Mexican restaurants, but Alegria is not only good, its the best Mexican in all of LA, eastside, westside, where ever, its the king. Its main hallmark is that its so fresh, the veggies, the meat, the tortillas, everything. My favs here are the Den's Wrap appetizer (sort of like soft chicken tacos with creamy chipotle sauce) , the Tacos Dorados (I get 1 chicken and 1 potato taco), and the different juices that they make fresh to order. I also love the fact that this place is BYOB. If you're not in the neighborhood (Silverlake) its worth the drive to come check it out.
- Pros: the best mexican in the city, fresh made juices, amazing potato tacos, BYOB
- Cons: Sometimes there can be a wait to sit down
Best Local Breakfast Spot

We moved to Silverlake a few months ago and being the foodie that he is, my b.f. quickly found the best breakfast spot in the neighborhood. Having lived in this area before, I've tried most of the other Sunset eateries and while their food is generally pretty good, the wait time, lack of friendly service, and patrons more interested in being seen (and heard) than enjoying a mellow morning make the experience generally unpleasant. Not Alegria.
Here's why Alegria rocks - it's a family-owned establishment (has been for decades) that focuses on fresh food and excellent service. Owner Denise is down to earth, full of energy, and a pleasure to see every Saturday morning. Most of the patrons on Saturday morning are regulars, giving the place a nice community feel. The fruit smoothies are refreshing. The food, no matter what you order, melts on your taste buds and leaves you full for hours. My personal fave is the nopalitos con huevos, a delish egg dish with chiles and a lemony essence with a side of beans over a sope. Be sure to check out the specials when you go -- we've never been disappointed. Whether it's pancakes with carmelized apples, shreded carnitas with eggs, or seafood enchiladas, you can't go wrong! And be sure to ask Denise about the crack-addicting Mexican coffee they serve, slow brewed with cinnamon and pilonsio.
If you value good food and good service over crowded outdoor seating and trendy attitude, you'll enjoy Alegria.
- Pros: great service, great food
Great place - a must try!

This place is great! Good food, great atmosphere and you can bring your own beer. The food is delish and the guacamole is the best I have come across in ages. The waitstaff is courteous and effiicient.
- Cons: Small parking lot and at times the wait can be kinda long.
Mexican Favorites with an Authentic-Yet-Healthy Twist

Alegria is so unassuming with it's strip-mall locale, but it's an excellent--and charming--dining option. You might have to wait for a table--especially if you plan to dine with a group larger than 4--but it's worth the wait (no reservations accepted). They specialize in unique Mexican offerings, typically with a healthy / vegetarian-inspired twist. Try one of their fresh-squeezed juices--from honeydew to orange-strawberry-watermelon. Pick whatever combo you want! They don't have a liquor license, but you can BYOB for a nominal corkage fee.
