Money down the drain

by NeerajG

Pathetic service coupled by rude attitude. We were 2 families and ordered 2-3 dishes. Most dished very pretty blend, asif they just boiled it and brought it in front of us except for Gobhi Allo, which looked decent in taste. However, potato pieces were way undercooked. When we told them, we got a bad stare and he just took it away. Never brought it back or asked for anything. We had ordered 3-4 more rotis thinking he would get Gobi Aalo back, he never bothered. Overall Bad food and Bad service.

  • Pros: Worst Attitute and ill mannered
  • Cons: Full of drawbacks

Perfect stop for veggie Indian

by simplydarius

Passing through the buzzer iron gates and somewhat dingy outer patio makes the cozy interior feel even more intimate. The two guys that run the show in the dining room are super friendly and helpful, and they serve you pretty fantastic food. A lot, for the money. At first glance it might not look like there's a lot of variety on the meatless menu, but that's in part because each dish comes with a lot of variety itself. Make sure to try the paratha, it's great here.

  • Pros: feel safe trying anything on the menu-- each dish will have at least a few things you'll love
  • Cons: going in a largish group can be hard to find a table, though the guys work hard to accomodate

Charming & Delicious, I'll be back soon!

by westhollywoodgirl22

I'm not a vegetarian, but a trusted vegetarian friend of mine gave this place her word. Still, the dinky outside kept me away a couple months until one night my boyfriend and I decided to dine at Paru's. What a treat! Don't judge a restaurant by it's "cover", inside Paru's is wonderfully charming, like a grandparent's living room or a scene from a Wes Anderson film. Pleasant staff and delicious food. Masla Dosa is a must. Mixed vegetable curry, mmm and the best raita (yogurt) I've ever had. Raita with a kick! Highly recommended for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike, you'll leave satisfied and look forward to returning.

  • Cons: don't have many traditional (well, what I know of Indian food from L.A. and London) curries

Southern Indian vegetarian Shangri-la hidden within a gated secret garden.

by Contributor

In Short
Since opening in 1979, this hidden find is where off-duty industry folk, scruffy 20-somethings and veggie-centric foodies have been converging to partake in casual southern Indian fare. Beyond the iron-clad security door lies a plant-shrouded patio replete with outdoor tables and an intimate booth-lined interior surrounded by colofrul knickknacks. Most dishes build on lentils, rice and vegetables with staples like masala dosa, uppuma and sambar. Lunch specials such as the mini thali provide an array of tastes, including samplings of raita, a dill-flavored cold yogurt salad.

Wow.....now I never write these reviews, but the food at Parus is really amazing. The samosa's are delicious and theTanjure dinner is mind-blowing. Very good service (cute waiter too!)and a very relaxed scene. Parking is a bit of a hassel, but if you are a vegetarian then this place is a must:)

Best Indian food since Berkeley

by ashamrock

I lived up in the bay area for a while and fell in love w/ Indian food. Since moving south 4 years ago this is the first place that matched the traditional food I had up north. The Masala Dosa is excellent and a meal in itself. The chickpea curry was spicy with a hint of sweetness. I like my mango lassi a little on the thinner side, not watery but not so thick it reminds me of batter, and their's is perfect and served cold. The specials give a wide variety of choices and are a great value. They didn't have all my favorites, since it is south Indian vegetarian, but every dish I tried was excellent.

A diamond in the rough!

by paulinask

I lived accross the street from this place for years without realizing it was there... Similarly, people dining here for the 1st time often miss the entrance and walk right by (probably because it's gated and you have to be buzzed in). But don't let this fool you! Once inside, it's like you're magically transported to India. There's a lovely courtyard garden with tables, followed by a smallish but very cozy restaurant. Last Monday we fooloshly went without making reservations - the fact that this place was PACKED on a Monday night (with a line of people waiting!) speaks for itself. If you're cool with vegetarian, this place rocks!

  • Pros: Tasty, healthy, authentic Indian food!
  • Cons: Can get packed

By Far Some of the Best Indian Food in LA!!!

by vvflores

I stumbled upon Paru's while on a trip to Freestyle Photo, and it was the best discovery I have ever made. Literally a hole in the wall, you walk into a magical garden with umbrellas, fountains, colorful paper lanterns, decorative pillows, and some of the best food I have ever found. After eating here, I can see why people are vegetarians! Everything they make is so fresh and flavorful- it really seems that they care about their food and want to only serve the best to their customers. Their sampler/combination/lunch platters are a great option to share with another person if your on a budget but still want good food. I have never ever had a bad experience with Paru's, either with dine-in or pick-up, and whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who loves indian food- the servers are courteous and friendly, the ambience is perfect, the food is amazing, and the prices are reasonable.

  • Pros: Everything: food, staff, ambience- perfect!
  • Cons: nothing :-) (okay... maybe parking...)

Great Vegetarian Fare

by resurrectedred

Its the best hole in the wall ever. It's unassuming at first, but once you press that buzzard and the host lets you in, you step into a lush landscape and forget that you're in LA. The owner usually greets you at the door with the most friendliest of smiles. I mean if you love Indian food, you must visit this place. Not only for the atmosphere, but for the experience.

  • Pros: Service, Food, People
  • Cons: Street Parking

A small Piece of Heaven

by anjani

Paru's is like a trip to a small village in the south of India. The food is always wonderful regardless of the day or time of day. I visit here with freinds that say they hate vegetarian food and by the end of dinner they say "wow!!, I never knew Indian vegetarian food was so good and so varied.
