Our New Spot
by snic1
My girlfriend and I ate at Puran's this past weekend and we're making it our new spot. I had the homemade mini-burger. It was very fresh and, according to our waiter, made to order. The burger was delicious. Then I tried my girlfriend's fish. And that was simply the best I ever had.
Oddly, though, they had this wonderful bread sauce that we tried to get to-go. They refused, saying it was for the restaurant only. Other than that, though....
An open kitchen. A friendly staff. And on the way out, we spoke to Puran, who was very detailed and caring about her food. We'll be back soon.
- Pros: Fantastic Food
- Cons: An Odd Thing
I Saw An Insect On A Table Next To Us!
by ricksanty
We came for a lunch, mid-week with some friends. I'd only been here once before, years earlier. It got nasty just as we were finishing our meal.
I kid you not, there was a cockroaach crawling on the table next to ours. We brought it to the attention of the manager, he gave us half off our meal. A free meal comp would have been nice, but at that point we just wanted to get out.
Is there anything worse than that?
- Pros: the insect seemed to be eating good..
- Cons: not a big fan of insects on tables.
Did I Luck Out?

I have read some negative reviews of this retaurant here on citysearch and was a little surprised. My girlfriend and I just tried this place last Sunday evening, after having lived in the area for over 2 years. I didn't know what region the food was from, but it seemed Italian/mediterranean. We both enjoyed the food quite a bit. My girlfriend's dish was a seafood pasta. I tasted the mussels, and enjoyed them. I am not much of a "seafood pasta" kind of guy though. I got the fried trout special, on a bed of couscous and spinach. I thought it was outstanding really. Totally bone free, firm (but able to break it apart with my fork) and with a mildly tart flavor courtesy of capers and a kind of mustard-wine sauce. It was the best kind of "full" feeling, not the kind you get from eating heavy meats, breads or cheeses. The waitress suggested some good white wine. I thought the waitress here was quite nice. She checked on us, and got us what we needed without being intrusive. She certainly wasn't rude. By the end of the meal, my girlfriend and I were feeling so buzzy and indulgent, we got desserts, and those were good too. Most of my other reviews (many of the negative ones especially) have been based upon multiple visits. Hopefully, if I return to Puran's the quality will remain high. I was just surprised to have had such a good experience and then see negative feedback from other diners. This is definately not a cheap eats place. Our bill was right around $100. So I won't make it a weekly occasion. But if someone's in town, it seems like a good place to take them. Los Feliz can attract a lot of uppity scenesters, so maybe it helps that I went on a Sunday early evening. Who knows?
- Pros: Nice trout. Good bread dip. Not crowded when I went.
- Cons: One of the shockingly few occasions when I had no complaints.
Pricey, loud, rude manager
by steveola
I was the 3rd arrive-ee of a party of 11 for a friend's Saturday Birthday Brunch. We sat outside on the patio awaiting the rest of the guests when the owner/manager rudely ushered us inside "your table is inside! if you sit at this patio table I will loose customers!" - uh.. the place was totally empty. We moved inside and continued the brunch. The place filled and we ate. Food was average all around. It became so noisy inside we were all yelling across the table to talk. II wasn't that hungry so I ordered PLAIN angel hair pasta. They charged me $12.95!!! For plain pasta... Anyway, there are lots more annoyances but the rude owner and the $13 plain pasta tops the list. Avoid!!
- Pros: Good bread
- Cons: Pricey, loud, expensive cork fee, rude manager
Nice light food...

A perfect place if you're looking for light and healthy dishes.
We had the salmon stuffed with olives and the ahi and both were excellent. Great service as well.
- Pros: Great light food
- Cons: A bit expensive
A Great Dine!
by tobelson
This is a wonderful place to eat. The food is really good and Puran?s uses fresh, organic (if available) ingredients. I have eaten there over 10 times and have never been unhappy. The chicken noodle soup is out of this world. Also, the bread dip is indescribable.
- Pros: The Menu
- Cons: Only 2 wines. Red and White.
Fresh and healthy but tastey
by cfriday
Elegant but relaxed. Service is always outstanding. Menu is varied and everything I have ever had there is great. They could jazz up the specials - they seem to have the same ones over and over again. Love the gorgonzola mashed potatoes. Food is always fresh and perfectly prepared. Again, the service is amazing!
- Pros: service, quality of food and preparation
- Cons: change up the specials some
Organic, worldly menu pleases locals at this romantic sidewalk cafe.

In Short
Puran's is relatively unknown, and its loyal customers want to keep it hush-hush to sustain the easygoing elegance. Tables spill out onto the sidewalk, lending the candlelit space an airy, Parisian feel. The menu sweeps the globe, melding flavors from Greece, Italy, Mexico and beyond. The Firecracker appetizer's pepper-cream sauce ignites shrimp served with baguette slices. Seasoning is manipulated in peppercorn steak and herb-grilled chicken entrees. Desserts include tiramisu and berry tarts.
Great Silverlake restaurant
by cdisip
Came here for dinner and had a great time. Our server was well-versed on the menu offerings, and even made suggestions. The food is delicious, well-priced, and the presentation was superb. This restaurant is very reasonable considering the quality of the food.
Nothing Special
by chiqchic
I went here on a date and was not at all impressed.
While the menu is varied and interesting, the food was nothing special. I got the Ahi Tuna and found it to be overall pretty flavorless and boring. My date had the steak, and he was quite impressed, but on the whole it is not somewhere I would remember to go back to.
As far as the service, again, it was nothing special - the staff were courteous, but did the barest minimum- took our order, brought our food, gave us the bill.
All in all, nothing special.
