Favorite LA Bookstore
by Michael Fran
Skylight is definitely my favorite bookstore in LA. With the recent expansion, their selection is even bigger -- the entire second space is dedicated to art, fashion and photography including a great graphic novel corner and magazine rack. The employee selections are helpful and trustworthy guides whenever you might need a recommendation. Their dedication to exploring and exposing local authors is definitely commendable.
- Pros: Selection
Love it!
by leschnei
I recently went to Skylight books for the first time with friends for the Harry Potter Book Release party. I am so glad we went there because it is such a fun and funky bookstore that it made the whole experience ten times better. There is a real sense of community and a love for reading and knowledge. I loved their card/stationary section and their shelf of locally published zines. Plus, it is located in a really interesting area. I will definitely be going back!
- Pros: Great atmospher, nice people, good selection
- Cons: limited parking in the area
Cozy Indy Bookstore
by lwmango
A small yet charming independent bookstore on the main drag of Los Feliz, sandwiched between a delicious Greek cafe and the Los Feliz 3 movie theatre. I love their publications section, as Skylight carries a variety of independent arts and literary magazines that are difficult to find elsewhere. The gift section also yields high-quality cards, notebooks, and Japanese stationery. Looking for a new book to read but are unsure of what to choose? Scattered across the store are the "staff's picks," books recommended by those that know the stock best. Be sure to pet Skylight's resident kitty and check out the store's schedule of author readings and book signings.
- Pros: Bookstore kitty, Wide selections of indy publications, Knowledgeable Staff
- Cons: Street Parking

This fiercely independent Los Feliz bookseller hosts a continuous schedule of in-store readings and book clubs.

Skylight Books is as good for people-watching as it is for discovering new authors. The airy, high-ceilinged loft-like look of the store lends to the comfortable aura and draws an eclectic mix of readers and writers. Skylight is renowned for the attention it pays to literary fiction and alternative literature, as well as local authors. The store often has autographed copies for sale and features an impressive schedule of book readings, panel discussions and festival events.
support great local store

Not as extensive a selection as the once-great Chatterton's which used to reside in this location, but still pretty great over-all. Readings by talented literary persons, and a nice place to stroll through between eating down the street, vintage shopping and seeing a movie at the Los Feliz theatre next door. Yes they really have a skylight.
Best "ma and pop" book store in L.A.
by youngblood58
While Book Soup is larger, I think that Skylight Books is the best ma and pop book store in L.A. The fact that today's most respected authors -- from Ralph Nader to Eddie Little to James Ellroy -- choose Skylight as the L.A. stop during their book tours testifies to this store's reputation among literati. The selection is not great, but you can order just about anything, and you'll usually get your orders within a few days. The staff are knowledgeable and very helpful. The atmosphere reminds one of those corner bookstores that were around before Barnes & Noble took everything over.
- Pros: "Underground" lit, Great atmosphere, Staff very helpful
- Cons: Selection moderate, Parking limited
Nice Neighborhood Bookshop
by RichardTate
Skylight is one of the last, best neighborhood bookstores in L.A. I've been to readings here and have spent plenty of time browsing the books, cards and magazines. Great selection of glossies, both mainstream and independent, and tons of industry-related books. The fiction and poetry selections are also solid, and the staff are helpful and willing to special order a title if you ask. I stop here first when there's a book I want to buy.
- Pros: Neighborhood vibe, Service/selection, Events
- Cons: Limited parking
