Tried this one out tonite, since I was in the area. Surprisingly empty by 9:00PM, even tho it's open 'till 11PM. Have to agree that it smells funny - the mens' showers positively stank. The tile floors were grubby, and there's no spray out in the common areas to wipe down the grubby (though otherwise modern) equipment. They actually have a great inventory of pretty modern equipment, so it's kind of sad to see they aren't maintaining the place as well as they should. Add a couple of cleaning people to the staff and address the stench and this would be a first rate facility. They even provide ample towels for free, something that's either a hassle or not available at other Y's I've tried.

Pros: Good equipment, not busy late at night, open late for a Y

Cons: Smells funny, not clean

Not to scare anyone but the people who work at this place can't be trusted. I am no longer a member but I was in the past. After using a credit card I hadn't used in over a year to pay for my membership at the YMCA, suddenly my card started getting all sorts of charges on it. According to my credit card company someone got my card number and had a card made with their own information on it. I NEVER use that card and I hadn't even removed it from my wallet in years with the one exception of using it to pay for my gym membership, seems like a big coincidence to me. I purposely used the card thinking maybe something like this would happen and I was thankful I did because my credit card company didn't hold me accountable. When I called the YMCA to let them know what happened they said there was no proof that the card number was stolen there. Be careful and always check your bank statements.

Pros: decent gym

Cons: crowded, not the cleanest place, rude staff

Yes, I went to this gym, I've alway's liked the Y. There was one young lady who was very nice who toured me thru but the rest of staff need attitude ajustments. I was hopeing to join but because of my low income at this time for me and I asked if there was anyway that it could be adjusted, like their motto ,no income to low. I felt like a bum asking for a hand out. I'm writer and out of work because of the strike. I thought this to be a good idea for me to relieve stress. But I was more stressed when I left there.

We love the idea of the YMCA although the application is something to be desired. The staff is rude and extremely difficult. Our family has always supported the YMCA through annual donations and volunteer support of which we will no longer contribute. The level of knowledge the staff possess and demeanor in which they approach conflict is troublesome! The facilities are dirty and there is a smell that radiates throughout that is hard to swallow. If you're in the market for a family gym look elsewhere, there's not an up side to the YMCA. It's all downhill.

Pros: The concept is great

Cons: The application is all wrong, the staff is EXTREMELY RUDE!

I was hesitant at first about joining the Y due to the fact that the trainer who led me on the tour was a bit rude and condescending, but after I got a feel for the place and talked to the office staff, I felt really at home. Since joining, I've been using my membership to the fullest. I love the yoga classes--there is a beginner's class, and also a few different method classes. The yoga instructors are very good, very patient, also. The hip hop instructor was a bit abrasive, but the good in the Hollywood Y really outweighs one trainer and one instructor with a bad attitude. The prices are really fair, very affordable, and the equipment and classes really make it worth every dollar.

Pros: laidback atmosphere, plenty of equip

THE HOLLYWOOD YMCA ROCKS! NO LONG TERM CONTRACTS, GOOD RATES, NO PRESSURE SALES AND TONS OF CLASSES TO BOOT! THIS IS THE GYM FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WORK OUT AND GET IN SHAPE. THEY JUST UPGRADED ONE OF THE EQUIPMENT ROOMS AND THEY HAVE EVERYTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY WANT. THINK OF HOW MANY FAMOUS ACTORS MUST HAVE PASSED THROUGH HERE AND IT MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD TO BE IN THE THICK OF THINGS. UNPRETENTIOUS AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Parking

There are two YMCA lots--enter one on Cassil, the other on Selma--that charge $1 for three hours with validation (look for the stamps on the table just inside the entrance or at the front desk). Otherwise, meters abound.
