Keen to try this place --

by max million at Citysearch

I have heard many raves about Ike Sushi, including right here at Cityspace, that I can't wait to get over there. The person who reviewed on 9/16/06 clearly has no business crossing the threshold of a simple sushi venue. Stick to Sushi Dan (ugh!) for your "rolls" and your tempura (which does not travel well -- are you surprised?) If you acted as bratty, spoiled and rude in their establishment as you have done so on this site, then I would not be surprised if they gave you substandard food to dissuade you from returning. You ordered like a pleb; you got to eat like one, too.

Best Hollywood Sushi Place

by searth at Citysearch

I love this little gem on Gower and Hollywood. Try the medium Toro tuna sushi. Mmmmm Good. It is run by the owner so you know it is clean and the fish is always fresh. Nice clean little restaurant. Try the Albacore with their custom sauce. Really nice treat.

Parking is a bit tight at times during lunch but at dinner it is never an issue.

Great sushi-way overpriced

by LAfoodGuy at Citysearch

Used to be a huge fan of this place but recently had a horrible experience. The sushi is always great. However, I was charged $50 for one order of grilled octopus, one order of salmon sashimi, and one order of cut roll toro. I know the octopus is expensive but come on. I have been there many times and had twice as much for the same price. I didn't even order alcohol this time. It used to be a secret and now since the Hollywood Big shots go there, they are starting to overcharge. Vince Vaughn once took my table from me there! They also don't itemize their bills and get upset if you ask them to or ask for an explanation. Used to be a secret, now it has prices that rival Katana and Koi, except Ike has no atmosphere. It is a dump with no seating or parking. At least at the Beverly Hills joints you get some service and a bill with consistent prices. Be prepared to pay $50 per person. The golden days of this place are over.

  • Pros: Great sushi
  • Cons: Overpriced, No parking, No seating, No ambiance, Dumpy Location, Sketchy Bill

Spotted Celebs Here

by SalimaHayek at Citysearch

And the food was good too :). But the likes of hollywood's elite Anand Bhatt, Mike Patton, and Alicia Keys were spotted and were friendly too. I think the atmosphere helps with their comfort level

BEST AUTHENTIC SUSHI

by cheng35 at Citysearch

I have been going to ike now for about 3 year. If you go, please sit at the bar, even if you have to wait. Then order salmon two ways which is one seared and one fresh. the seared one must be eaten right away when given to you since it has to be consumed warm. AMAZING! my other favorites are the crab handrolls, kanpachi, tai and toro...

  • Cons: parking can be tough to find...

Awesome place!

by georgeu2000 at Citysearch

This place is my favorite sushi spot in LA. Its also about the most authentic. It is located in a strip mall in Hollywood, so I would have never expected to find a great sushi place there! But it is absolutely outstanding.

  • Pros: Awesome, authentic sushi. Great service. Small restaurant feeling.
  • Cons: Parking can be a challenge. Be patient! Its worth it!

Something's changed

by Mizzouclam at Citysearch

I've been dining at Ike Sushi for close to twenty years, and in that time I've enjoyed some amazing Japanese cuisine and good times thanks to Ike's attention to craft and customer. But of late I must say that I agree with the author of "Rude Treatment". Ike's hospitality seems forced and his fellow sushi chefs apply an unspoken pressure to keep ordering or call for the check. What used to be nice about the "Ike" experience was not only an excellent meal, but some time and space to enjoy it in. Perhaps I feel that loyality earns a certain pace, but instead it seems the old adage of "time is money" dictates the flow now. Too bad, because I used to put Ike up against anyone's favorite.

Ike the Irresistable, Incredible, and Irreplaceable

by deliciousdee at Citysearch

This is hands down my favorite place to eat. The sushi is amazing, tasty, and fresh. Everyone I have ever gone with has immediatley declared it there all time favorite Sushi Bar.

Ike is there every night and if he can't make it he will have the place closed. He is incredibly attentive to detail, service, food, and his clients. As another reviewer mentioned I truly feel like I am coming home when I head over to Ike's. He has such a warm smile and the world's fastest hands. (Seriously, watch him when he gets going... he works at the speed of 4 sushi chefs and creates beautifuly presented plates.)

He always cuts my sushi in half and leaves my boyfriends whole. =0) I love it. I have always thought to myself that sometimes a whole piece of sushi is a lot for one bite.

Another testiment to the Sushi and to Ike himself is the amazing number of regulars that flock to his restraunt and his ability to remember each and everyone. This is sorta a lame story but one evening i went in with my contacts, rather than glasses, and he was the first to comment on their absence.

Thank you for all of the great meals Ike!

  • Pros: Great atmosphere for a casual date or dinner with a good friend. Amazing sushi. Top Notch Chef.
  • Cons: Going Home. It's so good you wish you could eat and drink sake all night...

RUDE TREATMENT

by missgorgeous at Citysearch

This is one restaurant I will not be returning to. While the sushi is good, the owner has managed to treat me in such a way which prevents me from returning. At one point I was a regular customer who spent a fair amount there and was never tight on tipping. When dining alone, I do not enjoy having a table to myself, but do enjoy sitting a sushi bars where I don?t feel so obvious and can chat to other diners. One evening I was doing just that. I had already eaten a fair amount of sushi. I ordered another plate and told Ike that I was just going to my car to get something and would eat it upon my return. He told me that he would serve it, but I had to move to a table where a Japanese family of three were already seated as there were people waiting and the seat next to me was vacant. I looked at the family and realized that they would no more enjoy having an outsider sit next to them than I would enjoy sitting with a group of non-English speaking strangers. I had always felt that Ike?s friendliness was phony, but this concluded it. I asked for my bill and left, never to return.

  • Pros: Decent Sushi
  • Cons: Phony friendliness. No loyalty to regular customer.

always the best from Ike

by mrgoodfoods at Citysearch

I've never posted a review on citysearch until now. I could not let the injustice of the last review by surething00 go unchallenged. Ike, who the reastaurant is named after, is one of the friendliest sushi chefs I have ever met. He would never ever yell at one of his valued customers like the last reviewer says he did. Ike is always very accomadating, constantly smiling, goes to lengths to make his guests feel very welcome, and is ALWAYS extremely gracefully grateful. I can't say that about other traditional, or semi-tradiotional, sushi restaurants in the neighboring areas.

If you're looking for fancy rolls covered in eel sauce, you should find another spot. This is a place where the modest menu doesn't rely on extravagance. The fish is amazing, always fresh, prepared with care, and served to you by chefs and waiters and waitresses that always aim to please. Part of what makes Ike Sushi special is it's unassuming location. Located in a strip mall where you would expect the food to be on par with the next door Domino's Pizza, it's anything but. I have yet to have sushi in the Hollywood area that matches what Ike brings to the table, Saito included.

Ike Sushi is truly a treasure that must be experienced by sushi lovers.

  • Pros: Ike at the bar, fresh fish, modest pricing
  • Cons: haters like the last reviewer

Worst sushi restaurant in town

by surething00 at Citysearch

I'm writing this because I want to warn people about this restaurant. My wife and I went to this restaurant the other night and we were served the worst piece of mackerel I've ever tasted. As soon as I put it in my mouth I gagged. I have sushi all the time and I know that some is just better and fresher than others but this was that rare piece that's just old, chewy and disgusting. It's simply food that no restaurant should serve.

We politely asked the waitress to remove the mackerel from our table and our bill (we ordered 4 pieces initially) at which point she said something to the sushi chef who immediately started yelling at us from across the restaurant. We were totally shocked and I actually agreed to pay for the awful sushi just to get him to stop yelling. He stopped for a moment and then started again. It was seriously unbelievable. Any other restaurant in town would be EMBARRASSED to serve food that nasty. The sickness I experienced that night confirmed everything I feared about the fish they served.

There are many really good sushi places in LA (Hirozen, Sasabune, Nozawa) but Ike Sushi is definitely not one of them. Avoid it for your own good.

  • Cons: food, service, entire experience
