Art Colony Restaurant Dining

by placecard at Citysearch

Barbara's is located inside "The Brewery" - a gargantuan artist colony that used to be the Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery - thus the name. I imagine it stays in business simply based on the fact that residents like to get drunk and eat without having to drive anywhere. The wine list is impressive - housed in a binder, classified by type. You order food (upscale barfood) at the bar, along with your drinks and someone brings it out to you. This isn't a "restaurant" as much as a bar with o.k. food. The fish tacos are just that, no sides, but big enough for lunch. They have outdoor seating and there is plenty of eye-candy.

  • Pros: Happy Hour, Wine List, Outdoor patio
  • Cons: Parking can be tight, No "service", Can be loud

Casual grilled fare and an exhaustive wine list in downtown's art center.

In Short
This former Pabst beer plant has been home to artists seeking sprawling lofts and camaraderie for more than 20 years. High vaulted ceilings help create the restaurant's industrial ambience which is often accompanied by the constant chatter of patrons. Walls display a variety of local art, and two patios let diners soak up the sun. The menu includes sandwiches, burgers and salads at lunch, pasta, chicken, fish and meat dishes at dinner. Daily specials are listed on a blackboard, and gourmet pizza is available anytime.

the most local berwery you can find

by adnaloy at Citysearch

I was first brought here by friends who decided to celebrate their birthdays in this local resturant/brewery that usually fills with the local artists that live in the surrounding lofts. I went again, only to find that their food is decently priced and have yummy mash potatoes as well as side dishes. Most people linger at the bar area, while those eating can choose to lounge on the comfy couches or sit at a table. It is rare to see outsiders here, but being one, I still felt welcomed.

  • Pros: Artsy, Inexpensive
  • Cons: Hard to find
