If you can't make it to Yun Chuan Garden in Monterey Park, then this will curb your Sichuan craving temporarily, as long as you don't order anything off of the combo menu. The Szechwan Cabbage & Pork Chop soup is the only item off the menu that i've had at an authentic Sichuan restaurant and the Szechwan Wonton ground pork dumpling in chef's special hot sauce is pretty good. The twice cooked pork here doesn't resemble the real dish in the slightest, where the pork is more like lean bacon, but it's good.

While the atmosphere is very table and chair the food has been consistently good for decades and is a local favorite. The Kung Pao Chicken is the litmus test for all Kung Pao. Nowhere is better for this dish. They also do an orange shrimp which isn't on the menu but fantastic. Hard to find if you don't know the area but worth it, especially for take out.

On the corner of National and Rose stands a tiny little building housing the most amazing food this side of the Yangtze. Hu's is a family owned hole in the wall that serves up delicious fare for an even more delicious price.

Do NOT leave this place without having the Szechwan Won-Tons: handmade pillows of yumminess filled with juicy meat and tangy fresh ginger. Another must is the Szechwan Shrimp, sweet and succulent with a hint of spicy. Lunch specials and noodle soups keep the place hopping at noon, and dinner service starts at 5:30PM. Stop at Fair Market next door and pick up some beer or wine to have with your meal, or enjoy the bottomless hot tea made fresh in the restaurant. If you're in a hurry, place your order to go, or have it delivered!

This hole in the wall Chinese restaurant is the best in Palms! The service is great and the prices are reasonable. The portions are huge and the food is delicious though a bit on the greasy side, but that's almost to be expected.

Make sure you try the spicy dumpling appetizer. It's da bomb!

Parking is a nightmare. Try finding a spot on Motor or Woodbine or Mentone.

  • Pros: tasty food and great value
  • Cons: parking

I've been hunting for a decent chinese place and decided to try this after it appeared on Citysearch's best eats under $20. We ordered a soup, a shrimp dish, a vegetable and a kung pao, all items highly recommended in other reviews. Very disappointed overall. The soup lacked flavor. The meat was chewy. The sauces were unremarkable, too thick, and without nuance. Sadly, not cheaper or better than Panda Express...

Hu's has been my favorite from Day 1. The service is quick and the dishes are very tasty and served in large quantities. Since I'm Asian myself, I can tell when the food is Americanized or truly Authentic. At Hu's its AUTHENTIC! I love the Cashew Nut Shrimp and my Fiance Loves the Orange Chicken. Some may think its oily but I think that's up to each persons' liking. I usually ask for a small amount of oil used in my dishes and sometimes even extra ginger or garlic in my dishes. I wish you the best experience at this restaurant.

  • Pros: Authentic Chinese Food, Service
  • Cons: Parking

I read the reviews and decided to give this place a try. I have tried it a few times and it is hard to believe this place is highly rated. Its not even close to being a good place to eat compared to any chinese restuarant I have been too.

I found that Hu's was greasy and service to be poor. My last visit, Eric, the manager, took my order togo. Eric made a mistake on my order, which I found out at home. I was over-charged. When I called, Eric, he insisted that it was my fault that he made an error. If we wanted the money difference, I would have to go to the restuarant with all the food so that he can correct the mistake and re-make our lunch.

Eric said he would re-make the lunch correctly. I went back to the restuarant, Eric took the food gave me correct change. When Eric gave me my order, I thought it was awfully quick, and Eric told me he had them hurry and re-make our lunch, which was a lie.

It seems that Eric just re-pack the same food in different containers. Eric replaced the salad with an eggroll, but the problem was he gave us the original main course back without re-making it. Eric has the nerve to lie that he re-made the lunch, even though we pointed that out. We did not see any stream coming from the container.

Its clear that I need to find a new chinese restuarant with better business practices, and better food. I would not go here ever again.

  • Pros: Greasy Food
  • Cons: everything

In Short
Like a down-home coffee shop in Hong Kong, Hu's decor blends traditional Chinese watercolors with chintzy plastic tablecloths. A spectrum of spicy Szechuan tastes are offered, as most entrees come drenched in pyrotechnic sauces. Yu hsiang beef is served blended in garlic, ginger and pepper, while shrimp with Szechuan hot sauce combines wine, garlic and chili-kissed tomato. Subtler, less spicy dishes include Mrs. Hu's salt-and-pepper chicken wings, chilled vinegar cucumbers, and stir-fry string beans.

This small local joint doesn?t look like much but the food is awesome. If you?re looking for an alternative to your typical fast Chinese fast food this is it. I prefer to take out, the place needs new decor, it's a hole in the wall, great service though. The egg rolls are amazing and you got to try the kung-pao.

  • Pros: Great food, good service, good price.
  • Cons: ambience, parking

This is NOT an upscale restaurant with a star chef. This is a "joint", the equivalent of soul food joint on the corner in Detroit. Except instead of soulfood and Detroit, substitute Szechwan-style and south-central China. It's heavy, think and so dang good!

My favorite is the Orange Peel Chicken and the Szechwan Dumplings. Sometimes the Orange Peel can be too "crispy". Make sure you ask them not to over cook it. The Stir Fried String Beans and Szechwan Shrimp are insane, too!

If you want to get down-home, make sure you have some white rice so you can pour some of the dumpling sauce on it. ROCKIN'! You can do this with the Bon Bon Chicken appetizer's sauce as well. The sauce for both dishes are spicy and the bomb and you don't want to waste it, so sop it up with the rice!

Now, if you can get there during lunch, they have a soup that is only served at that time. Chinese Chicken Cold Noodle Soup (I think). It's made with the same sauce as the Bon Bon Chicken. You WILL eat the entire bowl.

This place is right in between Sony and 20th Century Fox studios and all my peeps from both have made pilgrimages to Hu's. Plus it's cheap and the service is great. The waiters are the kind of guys that will remember your name. So go often and they'll treat you like a star!

MY ADVICE: Print this review, go with a bunch of friends and order only the dishes listed here (order it ALL 'cause it's cheap).

Don't listen to the food snobs! Those people just don't get it and they never will. Let 'em eat at Chin Chin's. This place is for artists, hippies and the young at heart. This is the soul food from the East. Embrace it! Go to Hu's with the crew, have a great time and get your Szechwan Soul Food Grub on!

OUT!

  • Pros: Fast service. Great food. Amazing value!
  • Cons: Parking is horrible.
